Watery Wednesday Great Falls

On Sunday, hubby and I took a walk along the C&O canal and to see the Great Falls on the Potomac. The Great Falls is a National Park and there are overlooks on both  the Maryland and the Virginia sides of the Potomac River. We also found a loop trail along the river where you can watch the heron rookery. I was surprised the herons are already busy at their nest. Their must have been a hundred or more different kinds of ducks on the Potomac. There were right in the middle of the river and it was too hard to id any of them.

  35. What a lovely place! The heron rookery really looks interesting, with their huge nests in the trees. I imagine the trees will be leafing out shortly and you won't be able to see them so well, but it would be fun to see the babies.

  36. What a great heron rookery! We had a similar large one near Butte (at Warm Springs Ponds), but the bald eagles wiped it out (they prey on the young herons) over a 2 - 3 year period. Visiting in Portland OR, and the same thing is happening to a big heron rookery we viewed on Ross Island.

  37. What a treat to see a heron rookery! I wouldn't have expected them to have nests in trees. They seem more like the ground-nesting sort to me.
