Happy Monday everyone!
Terns, Terns and more Terns. There are 15 various Terns listed in my field guide book for North America. But, on this post I am only sharing the Sandwich Tern. My first sighting of the Sandwich Tern was at Chincoteague. I was happy to see the Sandwich Tern again while In Florida near Daytona Beach. These photos were taken just south of Daytona Beach at the Ponce Inlet and Lighthouse Point Park.
You can't miss the Sandwich Tern with it's sharp black bill with a yellow tip. It is small to medium sized seabird and gull like in appearance. They have long pointed wings, grey above and white below. and legs are black.
They have a shaggy black crest. The Tern plunges and dives for their food.
Below two Sandwich Terns and bottom right I believe is the Royal Tern with the orange bill.
Just to show an assortment below is a gull, a few Royal Terns and one Sandwich Tern in the middle.
Closer look at the bill of the Royal Tern compared to the bill of the Sandwich Tern.
I hope you enjoyed my photos and post.
As always I thank you for stopping by and as always I appreciate your comments.
My list of memes for today, I hope to see you there. Thanks to both of the host below.

ReplyDeleteThese are a delight Eileen! Last week I was showing a young relative from down under some of our local scenery and I managed to get a tern into the lens - very distant and nothing so magical as these! YAM xx
Nice series of comparison shots. It's been a while since I saw a Sandwich Tern - such a delicate little bird.

ReplyDeleteFun to see the terns, especially the last close-up. I used to love watching them on the beach. Have a wonderful Monday.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a sandwich tern. Royal terns --- by the thousands. I'll have to keep a closer eye on the terns when we go to the beach.

The Sandwich Tern, oh yes, didn't you so well. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI learn something here every day! Thanks, Eileen!
ReplyDeleteNice photos! Wonder why they're called sandwich terns? (Maybe because they like to eat people's sandwiches? :))
ReplyDeleteI've seen this birds.. But I didn't know the names..
ReplyDeleteWe certainly don't see them here. They look distinctive and stoic.
ReplyDelete"yes!" replied the Tern! Or perhaps I've misunderstood, Eileen ;)
ReplyDeleteNice captures. Thank you. May the week open more surprises.
ReplyDeleteDo sandwich terns steal your sandwiches at the beach? They look shorter than the others. I love to see them at the waters edge . Great shots.. enjoy your week.
ReplyDeleteHello. What cool looking birds, Eileen! I love the black shaggy crest and the gold tipped bills. They look like paintings! Great photos, and gorgeous birds! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting name - Sandwich Tern. I wonder how they came up with that?
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! I hope that beach is still in good shape and the birds are all fine. It will be awhile before we venture out though. Thanks for all your prayers and kind words my friend. Hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteEileen - you brought a smile to my face with the mention of Chincoteague - the one time we visited, we were nearly carried off by some very large mosquitoes!!! I would have preferred to see the Sandwich Terns! Lovely shots in this post!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed seeing the differences in the terns . . .
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures Eileen . . .
I love how they all mingle :D)
ReplyDeleteThe Royal tern's bill is a lovely colour... your photos are great Eileen. Cheers!
What pretty birds!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post Eileen! It was fun to see the two terns together and learning their differences. Thanks for the info. Have a great week :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen those guys at the beach in south Walton, but didn't know what they were called. Thanks, Eileen!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I find terns very beautiful birds and look for them every time I go to the beach. Your photos are really great and I appreciate the information about the lovely bird.
ReplyDeleteHi Eileen, Lovely photos of the terns! Just glancing quickly I would have said they look a lot like gulls but seeing them side by side you can see the difference.
ReplyDeleteHave a good day!

The Sandwich Terns are so photogenic Eileen. It makes me wish I was beside the sea! Have a wonderful day :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures - I notice that one of the birds in the second picture is banded (ringed) - I wonder where it is from.
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Terns are a fun challenge to ID, aren't they? Great pictures. Thanks for sharing with us! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if these are the same terns as on Plum Island in MA? I went to see those once and loved it but I don't remember the specifics. They are terrific photos as always.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea there are so many different Terns. You're educatin' me on water birds. :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice !
ReplyDeleteCute little sandwich tern. I do see the band that Stewart mentioned. Thanks Eileen, I always love to see your pics.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful bird. Fantastic clear photos as well - they can often be so hard to capture!
ReplyDeleteThank you Eileen, I just loved seeing all of these terns!
ReplyDeleteI hope your week is going well.
All the best Jan
I love the Terns they are so beautiful in flight. We have only two terns in our neighborhood, the Common Tern and the rare Black Tern( which I have seen only at a distance and have never been able to capture a picture, sadly). These are lovely pictures, Eileen ...

You have a wonderful eye for detail and I learned about terns....Michelle
ReplyDeleteWhat great photos, it's nice to see them this close.
ReplyDeleteAmanda xx
Pretty birds. Black and white with an orange tip on their beaks. Have a happy day!
ReplyDeleteThe Sandwich Terns sure are handsome birds! Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteExcellent capture on the terms and nice detail on their features! Lovely species of birds
ReplyDeleteThese are great shots of the terns. Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteHi Eileen, Gee, the Terns are really pretty birds! I have been trying to get out to my spots to do some birding but it is hard as many spots near the lakes are flooded off limits. The government is pumping water out of Lake Paradise to prevent further home and street flooding here. I have been able to get to a few spots to take pictures. Maybe half of the birds are not here - we should be getting migration soon. Have a good day tomorrow! Hope all went fine with your Florida friends.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered what a Tern looked like as I use the word a lot in crosswords. I love their shaggy hairdo.
ReplyDeleteI don´t know what it is about terns, but you have to love them. Don´t you?
ReplyDeleteSo far I have not seen one of them I don´t love. :) Great shots!
This is a great teaching post -- thank you. It really helps to see the two species together. I think I'll remember this iD because of that!!
ReplyDeleteTerns have a unique body shape, always nice to see them. I've never seen the Sandwich Tern.
ReplyDeleteWonderful comparison shots. Some birds really confuse me, and I suppose I am not alone! :-) Wonderful photos! Well, I'm home again, but it will take me a few days to get caught up.
ReplyDeletebeautiful gulls, i was not aware of the different varieties!!!
