Blue Hole National Park

I am linking up with Mosaic Monday and Our World Tuesday

For this week's post I am sharing one of the tours at the Blue Hole National Park in Belize..This park is located just off the Hummingbird Highway in the Cayo District of Belize not far from Belmopan.  The park is over 500 acres and contains two cave systems called St Hermans and Crystal Caves. The park has various nature trails and the cool natural blue hole or pool.  Not to be confused..Belize is also known for the diving site called the Blue Hole.

Hubby and I arranged to have a guided tour with Neko of the  Belize Inland Tours of the St Hermans Cave and a guided birding tour on the trail of the Blue Hole National Park. Above is one of my lifers from the day's outing the Smoky-brown Woodpecker, the St. Hermans Cave, lizard and a Clay-colored Robin

Since we have done the cave-tubing in Belize we opted for a guided walking tour into the St Hermans Cave with Neko.

Sorry for the fuzzy photo, but I was excited to see this lifer the Violaceous Trogon.. Special thanks to Neko for helping me to see my lifers at the Blue Hole National Park.

These are some of the scenes from our guided birding tour with Neko at the Blue Hole National Park. Above you can see the natural pool (part of the Cave Branch Creek) called the Blue Hole, another lifer a Royal Flycatcher and its nest. The lifer  Rufous-tailed Jacamar and some more scenery around the Blue Hole.

The Blue Hole was formed from the collapse (sinkhole) of an underground river channel. The exposed section of the Cave Branch creek tributary can be view for about 150 feet before it disappears beneath the ground and into the cave system.

If you are ever in Belize I was highly recommend arranging a tour with Neko and the Belize Inland Tours.  I hope you enjoyed this photo tour of Belize's Blue Hole National Park.

White-collared Seedeater

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

This week I am sharing one of my Belize lifers the White-collared Seedeater. A Passerine in the typical seedeater genus.. It seemed to be a common bird seen around our Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge and all around Belize..

The White-collared Seedeater has a broad white collar, white rump and a black hood. It is native to Mexico and Central America.

Another male White-collared Seedeater, this one looks like it was a little wet from the rain.

They are found in savannahs, grasslands, shrub lands and vegetation along rivers.

The female White-collared Seedeater. Their diet consists of seeds and insects.

Another shot of the cute female White-collared Seedeater. The females wings and tail are brown, whitish wingbars. I saw these birds often around the grounds, mostly in the grass and sometimes perched in a small bush.. I hope you enjoyed my new wild bird.

Collared Aracari

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

For this week's Wild Bird I am featuring the Collared Aracari of the Toucan family. We watched this family of Collared Aracari's from the resort's dining room.. At times we saw 5-6 of these toucans flying or perched in the trees on the edge of the resort's property near the river.

Like the other toucans this bird has a large bill, is a dull yellow and has a black saw-tooth pattern..They also have a black head, a reddish collar and red rump.

The Aracari's were a treat to see and especially so many at one time.. My first sighting of these cool wild birds was in Costa Rica Collared Aracari

The Collared Aracari can lay three eggs in a nesting cavity. They roost socially, up to 6 adults and fledglings sleep in the same hole with their tail folded over their backs.
