1. Sept 8-10, we were on our Pennsylvania road trip heading to the Poconos and the Delaware Watergap area. We stopped at a rest area with a view of the Susquehanna River. I noticed a lot of Tree Swallows flying around catching bugs.  If you look closely you can see a few of the Swallows.

2. The Twin Bridges was one of my favorites out of the four Covered Bridges we saw on this day.

A view of the Twin Bridges.

3. While taking photos of the covered bridge above, I noticed two Bald Eagles flying above us.

4. One of the many painted picnic tables, this mural below had flowers, domestic goose and a deer with pumpkins.

5. My favorite picnic table mural was the Raccoon murals below, it is cute.

6. The Josiah Hess Covered Bridge.

7. Just upstream a bit, I watched a Great Blue Heron fishing. The heron caught a pretty good sized fish.

8. This is one of two Great Blue Herons I saw near the creek.

9. Below you can see the fish, it looked big to me. The heron dipped in the water or was it trying to move the fish around in it's beak. They swallow the fish headfirst goes it goes down smoothly.

10. You can see below a lump in the back of the heron's neck, the lump is the fish after it was swallowed whole.

11. I think the heron had to rest after the fish meal, I guess it takes a while to digest.

I will post more of this trip soon, various waterfalls and the Delaware Watergap.

Saturday's Critters # 571

These photos are from August 22nd, day two at the Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware. This wildlife refuge always seems to have a great variety of birds to see.

Click on images for better viewing!

1.Below are mostly Great Egrets, possible juvenile Little Blue Herons and a couple of American Avocets.

2. On the edge of the pond are a group of Mute Swans.

3.  I saw one Black-necked Stilt with a few Egrets.

4. Two Bald Eagles in the distance and closer to the drive was a group of Double-crested Cormorants and an Egret.

5. We saw the two Sandhill Cranes, these birds drew a lot of attention from birdwatchers and photographers.

Now there are 5 Sandhill Cranes being seen.

6. A Great Blue Heron looking beautiful.

7. A fox was seen walking toward our car. I like it's shadow.

8. Near one of the ponds was a group of Black-crowned Night Herons, most of these looked like juveniles. There was one Green Heron hanging out on the top photo far left.

9. How many night herons do you see below?

10. Here is a closeup of the Green Heron.

11. An Osprey flew and landed very close to the Night Herons and the Green Heron.

Further along the wildlife drive we saw a group of shorebirds and I believe there may be some Yellowlegs and American Black ducks in this group below.

I hope you enjoyed my visit to the wildlife refuge.

My most recently finished puzzle, I love these birds.
