American White Pelican

Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

For this week's wild bird I am sharing the American White Pelican.. It is one of North America's largest birds. The Pelicans remind me of a prehistoric bird.

A view of the Pelican's white and black wings..

Both  the White and Brown Pelicans are another one of my favorite birds..Groups of Pelicans have been known to work together to herd fish..

A side look at the Pelican's pouch. They use the pouch to scoop up fish..

We saw a lot of White Pelicans during our Outer Banks, NC visit. But, the Brown Pelicans out numbered most of the birds we saw.. In the Outer Banks there is a place called Pelican Island. A known Brown Pelican rookery that began in the 1980's. Between 500-1500 Brown Pelican fledglings can emerge from this rookery.

Another view of the Pelican's huge wing span..  I hope you enjoyed my Pelican post..   Till next week's wild bird post.. I wish you happy Birding and have a wonderful week!

Nags Head, North Carolina

I am linking up with   Mosaic Monday and Our World Tuesday

A mixed post our trip photos and today a Happy Birthday to my son!

I am sharing more birds and scenery from the Outer Banks and our stay at Nags Head, North Carolina..  The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful and we had some warm 70 degree days.. The birding was awesome..ducks, swans and pelicans were everywhere.

Above a series of the first evening's sunset and the moon...

The Willet and sunrise above was seen on the  beach in front of our hotel..

Above is the Bodie Island lighthouse and some birds we saw at the Pea Island NWR.  Seen above are the American Avocet, Tundra Swans, American Wigeon, possibly an American Pipit and Song Sparrow?

The Ruddy Duck population seems to be doing very well, we must have seen thousands of them.. I like their cute upturned tail...

We heard a Rail twice near or under this boardwalk...a pretty view of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. This was a wonderful spot to see the birds..

A mosaic of various photos of Brian over the years.. Today happens to be my son's 22nd birthday.. Happy Birthday Brian!

I hope you can join in on our fun at  Mosaic Monday and   Our World Tuesday

Thanks to Judith our  host of Mosaic Monday and to the hosting group of Our World Tuesday: Arija, Gattina, Lady Fi, Sylvia, Sandy and Jennifer.  I wish everyone a happy week ahead!

Here is a Northern Pintail seen at the Pea Island NWR in the Outer Banks..

I believe this is a Peregrine Falcon..but could it be a Merlin?
Edited..thanks to Margaret and Phil for helping to id the bird above..it is a MERLIN..

I was surprised besides all the Brown Pelicans we saw in the Outer Banks, there were also lots of White Pelicans..

Brown Pelicans were seen flying up and down the beaches..

Black Vultures

Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes  and Good Fences

For this weeks wild bird I am sharing the Black Vulture..

Besides seeing the Bald Eagles at the Susquehanna River, this area seems to be a hot spot to see lots of Black Vultures.. They were everywhere we looked. On the cars, fences, on the ground and in the trees..

We came across the owner of this car walking back from the trail, she had to shoo away these Black Vultures off her car..  They did not move away too quickly..

This one started pecking at the car, remind me of the time we were in the Everglades and were told to cover our car with tarp.. The vultures like to pick the rubber off around the car windows. Not sure why they like to do this though?

They were lined up on the fence near the river's edge..

The Bald Eagle did not seem to mind sharing their space with the Black Vultures..

I hope you enjoyed my post and the Black Vultures.. I was happy to see these birds posing on the fences for me..
