Saturday's Critters # 553

Sharing various photos from June, our walks at the reservoir, my backyard and from the NCR bike trail. 

1. Below are images from our walk at Hemlock Gorge, A Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, plant leaves look like Hostas and a Louisiana Waterthrush.

2. The Gunpowder River at Hemlock Gorge Prettyboy is a place I always see the Louisiana Waterthrush. 

3. The nearby NCR Trail in Parkton Md, is one of our go to trails for easy walking. On this day we saw some pretty wildflowers, House Wren, Black & White Warbler, White-breasted Nuthatch, Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, female Cardinal and possibly an Oriole?

4. I've been seeing more of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterflies. 

5. This is a female Orchard Oriole, the female has olive green upper parts and yellow breast and bellies. They can be found near streams, eating insects and fruits and nectar. 

6. Back home on the deck railing I have the Carolina Chickadee. 

Another visitor to my deck railing is the Carolina Wren.

7. The neighbor's Peacock was missing for a few weeks and then it came back every day for the first week of June. It was seen on my deck railing, showing off on the driveway and on our roof.

Also the first week of June I started seeing the White-tailed deer in our yard.  

8. Below a daily June photo of our visiting friendly Peacock. Most days we could see the Peacock out our windows just sitting on our deck railing.

Saturday's Critters # 546

A short break from our Arizona trip and photos. I have some birds from my yard and neighborhood.

1. Some of my daily yard birds, the Northern Mockingbird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, White-throated Sparrow and the Blue Jays. 

2. The next five mosaics are from our walk on the C&O Canal trail and at Great Falls NP in Potomac Maryland. 

Some blooms off the C&O canal trail,  a Yellow-rumped Warbler, a Mallard on the trail, a distant look at some Terns flying over the river. 

More from the C&O Canal trail , American Goldfinch, Hooded Merganser, Carolina Wren, Louisiana Waterthrush.

The Slider turtles were plentiful in the canal off the C&O trail. 

Lots of wildflowers seen off the C&O trail at Great Falls and a cute doggie.

3. Back in my yard, the Carolina Chickadee took up residence in one of our birdhouses.  

4. A morning walk to our local lake, Prettyboy reservoir. We saw the usual birds, the Canada Geese, Double-crested Cormorants, Eastern Bluebird and some first of the spring wildflowers. 

5. Our walk at the Hashawha Nature Center, we saw some spring flowers blooming, an Eastern Bluebird, Canada geese with the goslings, not sure if the bird third down on the left is a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Gray Catbird, Red-winged Blackbird, geese family on trail.

6.  These are photos from another morning walk on our local fire road, the Pink Lady Slippers are starting to bloom and the Big Leaf Magnolias are blooming, there were the White Dogwood trees blooming, I captured the bottom of a Baltimore Oriole high in the tree top, we also saw some wild pink Azalea blooming and a view of the lake from the trail.

On the same day May 3rd, we saw the Black Bear right off our local fire road. It was not far from my neighbors yard. I think it was the same bear that knocked over our trash can on our deck and bent a shepherds hook pole and tore apart my hummingbird feeder.

I have more birds to share from my yard and from our walks in the neighborhood and fire roads. These posts are also a record of the birds I see, where they were seen and the dates they were seen. 

1. June 3rd, on our walk to the lake we saw the Great Blue Herons, first time 3 seeing Belted Kingfishers together, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Wood Pewee, Mourning Dove, yellow Iris wildflowers and a pink wildflower.

2. The Pileated Woodpecker is a common bird seen and heard in our neighborhood. 

3. June 4th,  our walk at the Hemlock Gorge, Prettyboy.  We saw a lot of Louisana Waterthrushes, a Carolina Wren and an unknown warbler sitting high in a tree, the Dames Rocket and wild Mountain Laurels. 

4. June 4th, one of the six Lousiana Waterthrushes I saw during our walk on the trail at the Hemlock Gorge Prettyboy. 

5. June 4th, a Scarlet Tanager was seen in a tree next to the trail at the Hemlock Gorge area of Prettyboy. 

6. Here are two Lousiana Waterthrushes of three that were seen at this spot near the Prettyboy Reservoir. 

7. June 5th,  a Wood Thrush was walking ahead us on the fire road. 

8. June 5th, we saw one deer walking around our yard, the other two were seen off the fire road during our walk. We have been seeing 2-3 deer in our yard every day. They must be finding lots to eat here. 

9. June 6th, On our morning walk again was on one of the Prettyboy fire roads in our neighborhood.  I was walking ahead of hubby when I thought I saw a dog on the fire road but a closer look it was a fox. 

10. June 9, our walk was on the NCR bike trail.  We walked round trip 3 miles. I saw and heard so many birds, some of the highlights were 3 Scarlet Tanagers chasing each other around. 

11. The Cedar Waxwing is a beautiful bird, I recognized their sounds during our walk too. 

12. The Northern Parula was singing loudly, I heard a few of these birds during our walk.

Images are from various local walks, views of the Prettyboy Reservoir, NCR bike trail, the grand-dogs, various birds and wildlife and Hashawha Nature Park.

1. June 25th images of the Ruby-throated hummingbirds are quickly emptying my feeders. I am seeing 4-5 hummingbirds flying around my feeders, plants and yard.

2.  June 25th  The male and female Hummingbirds are seen regularly, I think their young are being seen now too. 

3. June 27th, the deer was standing at the end of our driveway, walks on the fire road with the grand-dogs and an Ovenbird seen during our walk. 

4. June 27, the Ovenbird is a common bird seen and heard in our local forest. 

5. June 28th, our walk was on the NCR bike trail at Bentley Springs, we saw the deer, Eastern Phoebe, various wildflowers, Louisiana Waterthrush and the Belted Kingfisher. 

6. June 29th, our walk with the grand-dogs to the lake, only birds photographed were the Canada Geese. On this day I heard more birds than I actually saw.  The Yellow-billed Cuckoo was heard and not seen.  

7. July 1st, another walk to the lake with the grand-dogs, slider turtle, dragonfly, Osprey and Mimosa tree blooms.  It cool to watch the Osprey dive into the lake for a fish. 

8. July 4th, early in the morning Hubby and I drove to the nearby Hashawha Nature Park, we enjoyed seeing the wildflowers, Tree Swallows flying over the lake, a Barred Owl with a mouse, Mourning Dove on the wire, caterpillar with a dragonfly. 

9. July 4th, a larger view of the Barred Owl with it's breakfast. we watched this owl for a short time just perched on the branch holding the mouse before it flew to another tree.

Saturday's Critters # 448

I am continuing with photos from our local walks and park visits. Birdwatching is my simple pleasure along with all things nature related. 

1. June 19th, our local walk to the lake included sightings of a large flock of Canada Geese, a Louisiana Waterthrush, slider turtles, a Bald Eagle and an Osprey. 

2. We watched this Osprey flying in circles over the lake when a Bald Eagle showed up at the same time. 

3. June 20th, another walk to the lake with the grand-dogs, at home I watched the Hummingbirds coming to the feeder, a male Cardinal stopped by for a peanut and our hibiscus is finally blooming. 

4. June 20th, the Cardinals are regular visitors to our yard, they do enjoy the peanuts I put out on our deck railing. 

5. June 21st, our morning walk with the dogs, at home the Fritillary butterflies are enjoying our Bee Balm and the Lantana blooms.

6. June 21st, the Fritillary Butterflies are a common sight seen on the Bee Balm and Lantana. 

7. June 22nd, a House Wren with a moth, male Cardinal, female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Downy Woodpecker and a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird. 

8. June 22nd, the male Ruby-throated Hummingbird was guarding "his" feeder chasing away any bird that comes near. 

9. June 24th, our daily walk to the lake with the grand-dogs, some wildflowers, Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Herons and views of the lake. 

10. June 24th, I always enjoy seeing the Great Blue Herons at our lake.

11. Bonus image, we had a little Maryland steamed crab feast and visit with our son's family. It is always fun to spend time with our grandchildren. The Grand-dogs enjoyed seeing their family visiting too. Below Pop-pop with Mason and Wyatt in his chair at the table.
