I have some more birds that I saw during our outing to the Susquehanna River SP and Conowingo Dam.  We saw lots of Great Blue Herons. There were too many Double-crested Cormorants to count. We saw a few Tree Swallows, an Osprey in a tree eating a fish and I already posted on the Bald Eagles.

Click on photos for larger viewing.

1. Besides numerous Bald Eagles, there were hundreds or maybe thousands of Double-crested Cormorants.  The were everywhere we looked.

2. Some of the wildflowers see along the Susquehanna River trail.

Dutchman Breeches, Trillium, unknown white flowers, Eastern Bluebells and a Redbud tree.

3. A fisherman and a view of the Susquehanna River, you can see the I-95 highway bridge in the distance.

4. Osprey has a nice sized fish, breakfast is served.

5. Double-crested Cormorants were perched on just about every rock sticking out of the river.

6. There is a Great Blue Heron rookery on the island in the middle of the river, just below the dam.

7. I counted at least 7 Great Blue Herons on their nest in the photo below.

8. Besides seeing the Great Blue Herons on the nest, they were standing out on the river and rocks.

9. Below are some Bald Eagles and more Double-crested Cormorants perched on the rocks on the river's edge.

10. Right below the dam, the Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Double-crested Cormorants and a Black Vulture are hanging out together.

Saturday's Critters # 388

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

So far May has started off with wonderful bird sightings right outside my windows.  I am a little behind sharing, these images are from the first week of May and they were all taken from my windows.

For the first time in the 30+ years living here I saw the Red-headed Woodpecker in my yard. It was only for part of a day but I was able to snap away some photos. The Red-headed Woodpecker is a beauty. I believe now I have seen all of the Eastern North America Woodpeckers right in my back yard.

Below a shot of the Red-headed Woodpecker on the suet feeder.

I was able to take a few good shots through my windows, below is the Red-headed Woodpecker on the deck railing.

The Eastern Bluebirds have been seen going in and out of a birdhouse I have on my deck.  I hope their nesting is a success.

Below are the female and male Rose-breasted Grosbeak.  They usually stop my yard during their migration north.

Below is a female Downy Woodpecker waiting for it's turn at the feeders below, they are occupied by the male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.

From my kitchen door, I noticed this Yellow-rumped Warbler high in the tree top.

The House Wrens and the Carolina Chickadees have moved into the birdhouses.

I do not have photos but I have heard many birds that have moved back into our local forest. Just from my yard, I hear the Ovenbirds, the Wood Thrush, American Redstart and the Scarlet Tanagers. Outside my front window ( the view from my exercise bike) I saw a few Magnolia Warblers, the male was a beauty.

Since, I am only posting once a week I am behind in sharing photos. On this day April 19th, hubby and I took a walk at the Susquehanna River State Park and at the Conowingo Dam. We had wonderful sightings of the Bluebells and various wildflowers blooming. Amazing numbers of Bald Eagles seen up and down the river, Great Blue Herons at the rookery and what must have been thousands of Double-crested Cormorants.

Click on photos for larger viewing.

1. A Bald Eagle mosaic, these are all different Eagles seen in different spots along the river and near the dam.

2.  Two Bald Eagles sitting in a tree.

3. The Bald Eagles were up and down the river, a scene we usually see in November when the Eagles are migrating. In this one photo I counted 20 Bald Eagles.  How many Eagles can you find?

4.  This is the  same photo as above but I drew a line near some of the Eagles I found. In some spots there were 2-3 Bald Eagle together, I counted at least 20 there could be more.  I think on this day there could have been 100 Bald Eagles.

5. Below are 2 adult Bald Eagles and one Juvenile below on the rock.

6.  Juvenile Bald Eagle watching a few other adult Bald Eagles near by.

7. Two Great Blue Herons, three adult Bald Eagles, one juvenile Bald Eagle on the top right and a few Double-crested Cormorants.

8. The Bald Eagles were perched on rocks below the dam, along with the Great Blue Herons, Pigeons and the Double-crested Cormorants.

9. A pair of Bald Eagle nesting on the tower at the river.

10.  Another Bald Eagle in a tree above the trail.

Another post, I will share more of the other birds we saw at the river. We saw  Osprey, Great Blue Herons and the Double-crested Cormorants. The wildflowers were beautiful.

I am seeing and hearing about the spring birds and migrants moving around I try to get out to do some birding at our local parks and my favorite parks.  On this day, hubby and I took a loop walk around Hashawha Nature Center. These are some photos from our walk.

1. Below are the Brown Thrasher, Eastern Bluebird, Chipping Sparrows, Northern Cardinal and a Song Sparrow.

2. At the raptor center, they have a male and female Barred Owl, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawks and a Great Horned Owl.

3. As the day warmed up, we saw lots of turtles. They could be the Eastern Painted Turtle. The Red-eared Sliders are being seen in Maryland after people have released unwanted pets into the wild.

4. Various scenes from our walk, the pond and Hashawha Lake.

5. Hellebore, Bluebells, some unknown wildflowers and the Bloodroot.

6.  The male Eastern Bluebird, I wish the twig was not in front of his face.  They are a common bird seen at the park, there are a lot of bird houses set up for the bluebirds to use.

7. These Painted Turtles were seen sunning along the lake shore.

Saturday's Critters # 385

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!  😊

Happy May, wishing everyone a happy new month.

I am sharing some of my back yard birds and critters. A mish-mash of birds from our local fire road walks to the lake. On May 4th we will celebrate our 31st Anniversary!

1.  A cute back yard bunny, I hope it is not eating our plants.  I've been seeing two bunnies in the yard, maybe a couple that will have babies soon.

2.
Seen on 4-14-21 are various back yard birds,  I watch these birds from our window, they were on our deck and at the feeders. I am still seeing a mix of winter birds along with the new arrivals of spring and summer birds.

Top row: Dark-eyed Junco, American Goldfinch and a Chipping Sparrow

Middle row: Ruby-throated Hummingbird and the female Purple Finches.

Bottom Row: Red-breasted Nuthatch, Red-bellied Woodpecker and a White-throated Sparrow.

3.  On 4-14-21   I am not sure if this is any early date for the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. It seems early to me.  Either way I am happy to see them again in my yard and I had the feeder ready for them.

4.   On 4-14-21 the male American Goldfinch is showing off his pretty summer colors.

5. On 4-15-21 I was surprised to see so many Double-crested Cormorants at our local lake. A group of Cormorants can be called a "flight" or "swim" or a "gulp". On the far top right photo you can see their double crest showing. You can often see the Cormorants with their wings spread open sunning themselves. Hubby and I saw groups of them in the lake and perched in trees along the lake shore.

6. 4-15-21, I found a few small birds moving around in the bushes along the shore. This Palm Warbler came out in the open for a few photos.

7. This Palm Warbler has a tick under it's eye.

8. On 4-17-21 are more of my yard birds at the feeders and deck.

Top row : male Pine Warbler

Middle Row: Red-bellied Woodpecker, Mourning Dove and a Tufted Titmouse

Bottom row: male Downy Woodpecker.

9. I found this cute solar chime decoration for our deck, the hummingbirds light up and change colors. It looks really pretty at night.
