American White Pelican

Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

For this week's wild bird I am sharing the American White Pelican.. It is one of North America's largest birds. The Pelicans remind me of a prehistoric bird.

A view of the Pelican's white and black wings..

Both  the White and Brown Pelicans are another one of my favorite birds..Groups of Pelicans have been known to work together to herd fish..

A side look at the Pelican's pouch. They use the pouch to scoop up fish..

We saw a lot of White Pelicans during our Outer Banks, NC visit. But, the Brown Pelicans out numbered most of the birds we saw.. In the Outer Banks there is a place called Pelican Island. A known Brown Pelican rookery that began in the 1980's. Between 500-1500 Brown Pelican fledglings can emerge from this rookery.

Another view of the Pelican's huge wing span..  I hope you enjoyed my Pelican post..   Till next week's wild bird post.. I wish you happy Birding and have a wonderful week!

Nags Head, North Carolina

I am linking up with   Mosaic Monday and Our World Tuesday

A mixed post our trip photos and today a Happy Birthday to my son!

I am sharing more birds and scenery from the Outer Banks and our stay at Nags Head, North Carolina..  The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful and we had some warm 70 degree days.. The birding was awesome..ducks, swans and pelicans were everywhere.

Above a series of the first evening's sunset and the moon...

The Willet and sunrise above was seen on the  beach in front of our hotel..

Above is the Bodie Island lighthouse and some birds we saw at the Pea Island NWR.  Seen above are the American Avocet, Tundra Swans, American Wigeon, possibly an American Pipit and Song Sparrow?

The Ruddy Duck population seems to be doing very well, we must have seen thousands of them.. I like their cute upturned tail...

We heard a Rail twice near or under this boardwalk...a pretty view of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. This was a wonderful spot to see the birds..

A mosaic of various photos of Brian over the years.. Today happens to be my son's 22nd birthday.. Happy Birthday Brian!

I hope you can join in on our fun at  Mosaic Monday and   Our World Tuesday

Thanks to Judith our  host of Mosaic Monday and to the hosting group of Our World Tuesday: Arija, Gattina, Lady Fi, Sylvia, Sandy and Jennifer.  I wish everyone a happy week ahead!

Birding Pea Island NWR

For my Camera Critters post  I have some shots of the birds and ducks I saw birding the Pea Island NWR in the Outer Banks.

The Northern Shoveler and the Tricolored Heron were hanging out together.  The Northern Shoveler male has a green head, white breast, rusty sides and a spatulate bill.

This is not the greatest shot of the Northern Shovelers and the Tri Colored Heron, the sun was setting and the lighting was terrible.

The Pied-Billed Grebes were hanging out in the pond opposite of the Shovelers and Herons.  The Pied Billed Grebe is suppose to be shy and is known to sink out of sight when spotted but these guys stayed out in the open.

The American Coots were in the same pond as the Pied Billed Grebes. The Coots have whitish bills and swim around on ponds diving for aquatic vegetation.

This Pea Island NWR shot has various birds up close and lots more in the distance. The Egret, I believe is a Great Egret and there are some Cormorants on the Osprey nest.

On this little island we spotted an egret, tri-colored heron and a great blue heron. There are four birds on this shot can you find them all. You can click on the image for larger viewing.

I am not sure about this shorebird, it was walking along the grass near the trail

This Eastern Meadowlark was a real treat to see,  I do not get to see them often.

Below, this Yellow Rump Warbler was refusing to look at me.

I hope you enjoyed my Pea Island birds and thanks for stopping by.

More Pelicans for Watery Wednesday

During our visit to the Outer Banks we saw a lot of Pelicans. There were quite a few Pelicans hanging out by the bridge at Pea Island. I think the Pelican is a cool looking bird... kind of pre-historic looking and one of my favorites and I love to watch them dive into the water for food. I was happy to see so many of them doing well and in one spot.

These are my shots for Watery Wednesday  Thanks to 2sweetnsaxy for hosting this watery meme.
And thanks for visiting my watery post.

Outer Banks Pelicans

Hubby and I arrived home yesterday after spending three and half days in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. My first time there and I loved it, the waves were wild and rough but the skies were a pretty blue. The road (route 12) was closed earlier due to high water in many places. Once they opened the road we were able to drive all the way down to Cape Hatteras.
We saw a lot of brown pelicans and I loved watching the pelicans as they flew all around us. Pea Island is a great place for birding.

I am linking up with Sally's Blue Monday and That's My World.
