Saturday's Critters #58

Saturday's Critters #58

It's Saturday and it's time to share your critters.. Any kind of critter will do, even a new or old post.. I appreciate everyone who has linked up in the past and for those who are linking in on this week's critter party. And of course I always appreciate my blogging friends stopping by just for a visit.

These are some birds we saw last week at the Edwin Forsythe NWR in NJ.. Even though most of the water was frozen we did see some ducks and geese at the wildlife refuge..

A pair of Hooded Mergansers...

I believe these are Dunlins in flight and a couple of American Black Ducks..

A few male Hooded Mergansers along with a couple of female Hooded Mergansers. The females have those crazy "hairdos'. The Mergansers were seen in various spots along the wildlife drive.

I am pretty sure these are the Gadwall ducks..I do not mind if you need to correct any of my id's.. I can honestly say I know I have made id mistakes in the past..

A Northern Pintail is having a talk with the Gadwall ducks..

Above maybe an American Wigeon along with the gang of Gadwall ducks..Except for seeing some duck hunters we enjoyed our visit to the wildlife refuge... I hope you enjoyed your visit and my photos... As always I appreciate your nice comments..

Thanks to Tex Theresa aka Tex, I was able to add this link up button and thanks to  Jennifer for creating my photo badge.

Bombay Hook NWR..May 19

I am linking up with   Mosaic Monday and Our World Tuesday

During our overnight visit to the Delaware Shores in May we stopped at Bombay Hook NWR. These are some birds seen during our visit to the wildlife refuge.

Bombay Hook is one of the many wildlife refuges in the USA. It is a popular spot for birding and is known as an Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy.  In my mosaic above, are the Dowitchers, Dunlins and a Black-Necked Stilt on a nest.

We saw a large group of shorebirds are Bombay Hook on this day, the groups include Dowitchers and you can see Dunlins with their cute black bellies.

You can there are various beak colors and the size, that we saw various species of Egrets. Mostly the Great Egret and the Snowy Egrets. Most of the 13,000 acres are tidal salt marsh and is one of Delaware's most valuable wildlife habitat.

278 species of birds can be seen at Bombay Hook NWR, 103 of these birds are known to breed there.

Eastern Kingbird, an asy way to id the kingbird is to see the end of the tail feathers. It looks like it was dipped in white paint.

I am not sure if this is a juvenile Indigo Bunting or a juvenile Blue Grosbeak. We saw both of the adults all the around the refuge on this day.

Above is a pretty male Blue Grosbeak, the chestnut color on its wing helps to id this bird.

The wild irises are beautiful at Bombay Hook!
I hope you enjoyed my post and photos. Thanks for visiting my blog and post. I always appreciate your comments.
Join in on the fun and for more wonderful photos please visit  Mosaic Monday and more from  Our World Tuesday

Bombay Hook NWR

I am linking up Camera Critters and I'd-Rather-B-Birdin.

Last weekend hubby and I took a daytrip to Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware. Another one of my favorite wildlife refuges to visit.  We saw tons of birds, one of the largest flocks of Dunlins, Plovers and other shorebirds mixed in. We saw American Avocets, Black necked Stilts, some cute Common Yellowthroats, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets,  Great Blue Herons, Cormorants, Laughing Gulls, Black Crowned Night Herons and more.

One of the first sights you see when you enter Bombay Hook NWR  is the Purple Martin houses they are close to the visitor center.

Then you can start the wildlife drive, the first pond is a must stop to check out all the birds. On this day they were plentiful. Above are some American Avocets along with some Bellied Bellied Plovers and Dunlins.

Some days are like this, the birds pick up, flying in unison usually to confuse a hawk.

What an amazing number of shorebirds!

I have witnessed this scene many times and it still is just amazing to see. After they calm down, they land and start feeding again.

What ever scared the Dunlins to take off did not seem to bother the Avocets, they stayed in their same happy spot.

The photo above show some of the Bombay Hook marshland habitat. You can see the Cormorant, Egrets and Great Blue Heron are doing well at Bombay Hook.

The Black Necked Stilts are one of my favorite shorebirds. They are so cute!

Sorry, these shots are not the best they were all taken from my car window. I really liked this Snowy Egret perched on a tree. I hope you enjoyed my birds and  post.

I hope everyone has a happy weekend. Thanks for stopping by and I always appreciate your comments. To see more beautiful photos and cute critters please visit:  Camera Critters and I'd-Rather-B-Birdin. Thanks to the gracious hosts Misty Dawn of Camera Critters and to Anni of I'd Rather-B-birdin.

Birding Chincoteague Part II

Hi, I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter Sunday. I can not believe how fast the weekend goes, just flies by.

Birding Chincoteague for Mosaic Monday  and That's My World I created my mosaics with photos of the various birds and scenes from Chincoteague Island Virginia. The national seashore and refuge is one of my favorite places for birding. Hubby and I try to take an annual overnight trip to celebrate our 21st anniversary. This was an early celebration, our anniversary is May 4. The shorebirds, waders, and ducks were abundant and always a great sight for me to see.

Birds seen in this mosaic are Sanderlings, Merganser, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Great Egrets and on the bottom row are Dunlins.

In this mosaic birds seen are the Cattle Egret, Tree Swallows, Great Egrets, Northern Shovelers, and bottom corner is the American Oystercatcher.

I hope you enjoyed my birding at Chincoteague and to see more mosaics please visit Mosaic Monday and for more photos from around the world visit That's My World

Thanks to Mary of Little Red House for hosting Mosaic Monday and to the gang of That's My World : Sylvia, Wren, Sandy and Klaus.

Shorebirds

This past weekend I went to Delaware with a few friends from my bird club. We stopped at a few places along the Delaware shore to see the migrating birds.

The American Avocets at Bombay Hook NWR were beautiful along with hundreds of Dunlins and Dowitchers.

The Dunlins have black circles on their bellies.

The Avocets have black and white wings and their bills are slightly upturned. The breeding adult has an orange head and neck.

The Laughing Gulls were one of the most common birds we saw along the shore.

The Glossy Ibis
