Last Saturday I was enjoying the sunrise and watching my yardbirds from my deck. I could hear the Pileated woodie towards the back of my yard before he started flying toward me.
I was able to take a small video of the Pileated. I am still practicing with the video on my camera so the Pileated is more of a silhouette but it is still a cool yardbird. Next I would love to see the Pileated woodie on my suet feeders.

The woodpeckers are some of my favorite birds. So far in my yard I have seen the Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Redbellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Northern Flickers, Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers. The only other woodpecker for this area that I have not seen in my yard would be the Redhead Woodpecker. The Redhead Woodie is being seen above where I live.... like in my sisters yard in Hanover Pa and below where I live in Baltimore County. I wonder if I can bring one home from my sisters on Christmas Day. Santa, can you hear me singing all I want for Christmas is a Redhead Woodie for my yard?

How lucky you are to have Pileated Woodpeckers so darn close. I loved the video. Hope they find your suet feeder...so we can enjoy the pictures.

Pretty cool video. I too am just learning what to do (or better yet what not to do) when doing video so I can appreciate what you have here. The only woodpecker we get in our yard is the Acorn Woodpecker. Keep at it with the video filming.

Hi there - I have to say that Pileated Woodpecker is one of my favourite birds - a friend of mine gets them in his garden in Ohio. Spent more than a few hours watching them there!

Wonderful Eileen - pileated is my spark bird but a bit of nemesis for photos :) . btw - the 2nd "downy" the male is a hairy woodpecker i think- note the longer bill compared to head size. Super close-up too.

They're so very beautiful! Excellent work. We're feeding birds like mad, only to keep the kittens on the property. And still they cross the highway. Ah well. happy birds (and squirrels!)

I feel your pain Eileen. I have been waiting for a Red-headed woodpecker to fly into my yard for years! Super rare to see those pileateds too let alone get footage!

Great shots of all the Woodies Eileen! Nice job capturing that Pileated in flight too! The Pileated Woodpecker is a photographic nemesis bird of mine. I have seen them but never gotten a good photo of one. I would give my eye teeth to have one in my yard!
