Belted Kingfisher

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

During our visit to the refuge on Friday, we were able to watch a Kingfisher for awhile. This is the first time, the kingfisher did not spook and fly away.

The adult female Belted Kingfisher has rufous flanks and a rufous belly band. They are a resident year round in Maryland. They are usually found perched above streams, peering into the water for fish.

One time it flew towards us and then landed in another tree. The Kingfisher was still a distance away, hence the somewhat fuzzy cropped photos.

Thanks for visiting my post, I hope you enjoyed the Belted Kingfisher. Tomorrow, I will be taking a blogging break for about two weeks. I will catch up on everyone's blog at that time.

Join in and post your birdies and to see more beautiful and wonderful bird photos please visit:
Stewart's Wild Bird Wednesday and Michelle's  Nature Notes.
Thanks to Stewart for hosting Wild Bird Wednesday and thanks to Michelle for hosting Nature Notes.
I wish everyone a happy week ahead and Happy Birding!

Enjoy your blog break (vacation?)....getting a picture of a Kingfisher is high on my bucket list. I see them fairly often but they fly the minute I even think "Camera."

Wow. I love your Belted Kingfisher photos Eileen. I saw one very briefly when I was on vacation in Colorado, but failed to get any sort of photo - it just flew past me and out of sight.

I was going to head to the Brigantine Wildlife Refuge this read but it seems the road is still closed from Sandy damage. Guess I will have to head to Cape May Point instead..

She is beautiful Eileen. I find them to be very skittish indeed and much patience needed to photograph them. Nice job!

I love Kingfishers. There are some at the lake I frequent, but I can't get close enough for photos. Your shots are very nice!

Brilliant shots Eileen. i'll bet seeing that kingfisher perched up just made your day. It sounds like they are as wary as our common Kingfisher.

Very cool, Eileen. I saw my first belted kingfisher of the year just yesterday. It doesn't look like spring but the kingfishers seem to think it's here. :)

Hi Eileen, What a wonderful big bird! I have not seen any Kingfishers here in Florida yet. I don't live near permanent water (only rainfall retention ponds). Have a super good Tues. tomorrow!
