Orioles

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

My prayers go out to the people of Moore Oklahoma.

This week's bird is the Oriole. Luckily I have seen different species of Orioles the last two weeks. These are the boys of summer. At the local park there were lots of Baltimore Orioles and during my last trip to Bombay Hook I was able to see the Orchard Oriole.

The Baltimore Oriole. The Baltimore Orioles can be found at backyard feeders, they like oranges and grape jelly and the sweet nectar found in the hummingbird feeders. Adult males are flame orange and black.

1st summer male Orchard Oriole, this male is similar to the female except for the black throat patch.

Orchard Oriole, is the smallest North American Oriole. The rich chestnut color can be so dark the bird can appear black.

I saw a lot of Orchard Orioles at Bombay Hook NWR.

My favorite shots of the Orioles are of the Orchard Oriole on this wheat colored grass.

I hope you enjoyed my Oriole post and  photos.

My, my, I didn't realize there were so many different orioles in the world! Your photos are lovely, as usual, and the colors of these birds are just amazing.

Love viewing your beautiful orioles. Wish they would visit my backyard.

In contrast, I find looking at pictures of Oklahoma unbearable. Those poor families.

what beautiful birds. The only oriole in the UK is the golden oriole which is only found in a couple of places in the south of England.

That is also my favorite photo. The only Oriole I have seen is the Baltimore and we have had them here the last few weeks. A gorgeous bird that has a beautiful song.

Beautiful photos of the Orioles. My favorite is the Orchard Oriole in the wheat grass too. I have a pair of Baltimore Orioles coming to my feeder but I have not gotten a photo yet.

Your orchard oriole shots put mine to shame. There was only one day that I saw them and the wind was waving them all over the place as they foraged in a low bush. They are so pretty and your shots are awesome!

Just like human, they share a common name, oriole, but look so differently.

Your photos are great Eileen.

I too am thinking of the people in Moore, Oklahoma.

I wasn't familiar with Orchard Orioles. Thank you for the education. Your photos of both varieties are beautiful.

I'm envious! It's been a couple of years since I've seen an oriole and that was only for a minute. Love these photos!

Hi Eileen, The Orioles, like the Eastern Bluebirds, just seem to be such cheery-looking birds. I have only seen just a handful of these rather elusive (to me) birds. They seem to like the crowns of trees a lot. Have a wonderful Wed. tomorrow!

My oranges are out . . . sure hope the Orioles decide to stop here for some nectar . . .

Wonderful photos Eileen . . .

How brilliant to see all those orioles in one day Eileen. They certainly are a colourful family of birds, the same colours you captured so well.

Lovely shots Eileen!
The first one is my favorite - beautiful all around color in that one!
I do like the natural grass surroundings as well.
Hope you're having a wonderful week!

Nice comparison of the Orchard and Baltimore Orioles. I have found it takes great patience or just plain luck to get one of them to pose out in the open. They seem to be so preoccupied with their foraging.

MyMaracas said...

Beautiful! There are orioles around; I have seen them briefly, rarely. I tried leaving cut oranges for them, but had no takers, other than bees.
