Venice Rookery

I am linking up Camera Critters and I'd-Rather-B-Birdin.

During our Florida trip we visited the Venice Rookery. It was amazing to see the Great Blue Heron, Egrets, Cormorants, Anhinga all nesting together.

This shot shows the rookery island in the middle of this small lake. We were able to walk around the lake getting different views of the rookery.

Above are some of the Great Herons from the Venice Rookery
We saw a lot of the Great Egrets at the rookery.

Walking around the lake we noticed this black snake?

The Anhingas were also at the rookery. I love the look of the juvenile anhinga.

A disturbing scene from the Venice beach pier. Two fisherman caught a Pelican on the fishing line, they pulled up the pelican and flung hard down onto the pier. This is only shot I was able to take showing one fisherman holding the Pelican by its bill.  I was taking this shot from the beach, by the time we got up on the pier the pelican disappeared? I was very sad to see the pelican being mistreated. :(

I was afraid to confront the fisherman, especially since I was not able to see the pelican hurt nearby. What would you have done?

I hope you enjoyed my critter post. I hope everyone has a happy weekend. Thanks for stopping by and I always appreciate your comments. To see more beautiful photos and cute critters
please visit:  Camera Critters and I'd-Rather-B-Birdin. Thanks to the gracious hosts Misty Dawn of Camera Critters and to Anni of I'd Rather-B-birdin.

ARRRRGGGGHHH!!! Snake!!! Looks just like what I might see down here on a bad day!!! Glad you saw it before someone trod on it ... and hopefully the pelican was unhooked and flew away??

Have a great weekend!!!

did they eventually let the pelican go?

that breaks my heart. why are folks not nice to wildlife? i always wonder - if you have to fight something (i don't agree with fighting in any sense) - fight something that can fight back. that seems so cruel. hateful too. ) :

Gorgeous photos Eileen . . . such interesting travels you have experienced!

Don't like to see mistreating of anything. I truly can't understand cruelty . . . I hope the Pelican was able to get away . . .

I would have asked them questions, such as: was he hooked and did you get the hook out? Where is the bird now? Why did you treat it so roughly? I guess when I'm mad I can let my mouth go.

Everything was going just fine, enjoying your beauties...then, that nasty snake?!!! Eww. LOL

Would have loved to see something like this in person [not the snake, the nesting]

Really lovely photos Eileen--What a beautiful place to visit. I'm just sorry that it ended with the mistreatment of a pelican--I hope it was okay, and don't know what I would have done, probably the same as you.

I hope your weekend is off to a good start!

I lived in Venice in the early '70's and I don't remember this area. Neat rookery. Reminds me of the little island at Biltmore.

Sad about the pelican. I probably would have said something to the fisherman --but then again, maybe not. He may have attacked me!

Hugs,
Betsy

How wonderful to see all those birds and their nests! I hope the fishermen removed the hook from the poor pelican.

sure hope the pelican got released w/o hook!

love the rookery on the island. giving them space but lots of viewing potential.

Hi Eileen, great shots of the nesting birds in Florida. Sneaky snakes will steel the bird eggs.

I think you did the right thing by not confronting the fishermen about abusing the helpless pelican.
Hopefully they will get a hook struck in their mouth someday and be treated the same way!

Great post Eileen- have a happy weekend.

Wonderful rookery shots. It is amazing and wonderful to see various species together that way!!

I am so disturbed to see those fishermen mistreat the pelican. I've seen one caught by accident once, but those guys were good sportsmen and carefully released it. I would be afraid these days to confront them, anyone would would do that is probably unstable to say the least.

Oh and that is a black snake I'm sure. We had one crawling up the porch of the house next door earlier this week. They're not poisonous. (although, not being totally sure, I wouldn't mess with one.)

Wonderful photos as usual.
Sad about the pelican but since you didn't see him I hoping he flew away and was fine.
I guess I would have asked the fishermen what happened to the pelican. Maybe it wasn't as bad as it looked. Perhaps he was just holding him mouth closed while the freed him from the fishing line.

If they grabbed the pelican it was to take the hook out I believe. And that's what you're supposed to do.

Lovely shots, sometimes we can't do anything in such situations.

Great post! I had no idea so many of those large birds would nest in close proximity. I hope the pelican wasn't being mistreated. Thanks for sharing all those baby birds with us!

that tree is really crowded. Somewhat like a skyscraper. What a sight!

Then the last incident spoils it all. Didn´t it? I would probably have reacted the same way you did.

Nice photos and collages (as always!). I believe I'd have put that photo in the newspaper so others could see and identify who was mistreating the Pelican.

We can only hope it was released unharmed. Otherwise, lovely shots of your visit.

It must have been an amazing experience to see so many nesting birds in such a small area. Your photos are wonderful -- with the possible exception of the black snake.

How sad to see people abusing pelicans...

Oh! The last shot is shocking and painful!

Hello Eileen,
Like you I am often impressed by the variety of bird species reproducing together so closely in heronries!
A magnificent and noisy show with fights breaking out and lovely scenes of parenting!
Great images!
The snake is harmless, it is a grass snake, quick reflexes you've had!!
Cheers!

Yesterday, after I had posted a comment for you while in my Hootin' Anni's admin, I went walking along the bay here in town, and saw about 6 or 7 herons at the tree tops...thought of your post here.

Hope your weekend is going well Eileen.

Can't believe you've got birds like that so close. Hope the pelican's ok. Love your bright blue header; it's one of the most distinctive I've seen.

Wonderful shots of the birds. The snake is kind of beautiful. So sad about the pelican. I hope they let it go. I don't understand why people mistreat animals and birds, it's just awful.

It always amazes me to see such big birds nesting in trees. You would think that they would topple out. Is the snake poisonous? Sad about the fishermen and the pelican.

Irma said...

Beautiful pictures of all kinds of birds.
I hate what they do with the pelican.
I would report the matter to the police animals.

Eileen,
What a wonderful journey! I am sorry about the Pelican-makes me sad too. I have always been intrigued by shore birds and such. Growing up in Idaho the Sandhill Crane was a frequent visitor and I found him to be so interesting.
Thank you for sharing!

Wonderful rookery photos. There is one Great Blue rookery we visit on the Missouri River which I love. We always keep our distance when we are in the canoe. Your photos are lush and colorful.

Hi Eileen, I started to make comment on this post over the weekend but had been away from home and using my little 7" tablet which isn't ideal to type up much in way of comment; I gave up. I wanted to say that I felt most distressed too seeing and reading your comments on what you saw with the fishermen and the pelican. If I'd seen that, and with your photo as evidence, I would present it to local paper perhaps, (shame them!), but firstly, to some animal rights society that could handle the matter. They shouldn't get away with that cruelty. It must've made you feel very unhappy and difficult to enjoy the rest of your outing there after that....

My heart hurts thinking of that pelican's mistreatment. :( Hope he's okay. Enjoyed your shots of the rookery, especially the babies. Rookeries always make me think of a hippie commune. Hee. Hope you have a great week!

OMG...you did such a fantastic job as photographed them! These birds I don't see often!

Oh my gosh that is horrible ! Not sure what I would've done maybe printed the photo with what you seen. Then hang it up by the pier for everyone to see.
