Horned Grebe

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

This week I am featuring the Horned Grebe I saw while at the Ocean City Inlet.

The Grebes are one of my favorite birds, as least my favorite at the time of the sighting..

Look at that eye, isn't it cool? Looks almost alien like... neat scarlet eyes. The Horned Grebe is a small water bird. And an excellent swimmer and diver.

Their plumage is unmistakable in the summer, when both the male and female have a black head with brown puffy earlike tufts

I hope you enjoyed seeing the Horned Grebe as much as I did! Thanks for stopping by my post and for all the nice comments.

Nice bird - grebes of any sort are hard to get pictures off - they always seem to like the other side of the lake to me!

just looked up the scientific name and this is the same grebe we call the Slavonian grebe! Though yours looks different somehow from those I've seen. Lovely photos.

I've never seen a Horned Grebe... so cute! I just love the little divers. I saw my first Ring-necked ducks last week. Several pairs were still hanging out here before heading North. Loved seeing them dive too!

I enjoyed seeing the horned-billed grebe so much! I've only seen the pied-billed around here and he is one of my favorite waterfowl.

That red eye was the first thing I noticed. He looks like a handsome fellow.
The ripples and the color of the water made a terrific background to capture him against.
Lovely shots!
Hope your week is off to a great start.

Hi Eileen, I sure do like Grebes. I used to see these lively divers a lot on Lake St. George where I used to live up in Tennessee. Your pictures are quite good. Have a pleasant day today and another good one tomorrow!

They eye is most definitely a deep, bright scarlet red!!

I love all of the Grebes. The Horned Grebs are probably the most spectacular but I don't see them often aroumd here ( I agree the red eye is amazing). My favorite is probably the Pied-Billed Grebe ... they are just too cute and we do see them here often. Great pictures
