For this week's wild bird I am sharing the American White Pelican.. It is one of North America's largest birds. The Pelicans remind me of a prehistoric bird.

Both the White and Brown Pelicans are another one of my favorite birds..Groups of Pelicans have been known to work together to herd fish..

We saw a lot of White Pelicans during our Outer Banks, NC visit. But, the Brown Pelicans out numbered most of the birds we saw.. In the Outer Banks there is a place called Pelican Island. A known Brown Pelican rookery that began in the 1980's. Between 500-1500 Brown Pelican fledglings can emerge from this rookery.

Enjoyed the photos of the pelicans; they remind me of a few years back when we had a lot of them at Pine Lake State Park.
Unusual bird, isn't it? I love to see them flying along a beach.
This definitely a very cool bird. It's making a comeback in many parts of our country and that's encouraging. Wonderful sightings and what a beautiful area!

I adore the pelicans - we had the white ones in N. California and they have them in Seattle - just 90 miles south of here - but none up here - I can't figure that out. I loved to see them flying low over the water. Your photos are fabulous!

They are so amazing! I still can't believe we saw so many of them in Oregon ... that was totally unexpected.
We see more of the brown ones here in Florida -- only occasionally the whites. I always think the brown ones are like clowns, while the white ones are more graceful. And you are right, both seem rather prehistoric.

Great pictures! Pelican are so pretty, I didn't know they had a little black under their wings.
Pretty!!! What a difference a day makes, tho...some on dark gray water, while on another day the blue water is intense.

I love pelicans too, they are such a strange looking bird. I didn't know there were brown and white ones. We've only got 'white' ones I think.
They've always looked prehistoric to me, too.

Pelicans do look a tad prehistoric don't they? But they are oh so graceful in flight.
I LOVE Pelicans! Our Aussie ones are Black AND White so it's a bit strange to see a pure white one, but other than that they look very similar! Have a great week!
