For this week's wild bird I am sharing the Red Knot from our visit to the Delaware shore. The first couple of weeks of May is a awesome time to visit the Delaware beaches to see the shorebirds migrating and the horseshoe crabs laying their eggs. The Red Knot is listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
It can be fun trying to pick out a certain species of bird that is hanging out with a group of various shorebirds. I was looking for the Red Knot and in the center of the photo above is my Red Knot, the larger shorebird with the reddish head and neck. It is 10 inches tall compared to the 8 inch Dunlin also seen in the photo.
The shot above has three Red Knots along with the Laughing Gulls, Dunlins and some other little peeps. Can you find the 3 Red Knots, they kind of form a triangle in the photo.
I see one Red Knot is the photo above, third bird down from the Ring-billed Gull. The size difference between the gull and shorebirds is amazing.
I managed to find one Red Knot standing out in this group of birds, do you see it? But, there could be more, they are so close together.
And I think I see three Red Knots in this shot of the birds in flight, do you see the Red Knots? Seeing the reddish color on their fronts help to pick them out of a crowd. The birds with the black spot on their bellies are the Dunlins.

I sometimes have that trouble when they huddle... which one is which - the only guarantee is there are gull species and there are others!!! Congrats on the red knot... YAM xx

Great series. I envy you living so close to that kind of habitat. A Red Knot is a rarity around here.
I am not familiar with these birds but I can see the difference. There are so many and I like the birds in flight.

They look a little like the sandpipers on the west coast.
my first viewing and hearing of a red knot. the gulls look like giants with the other birds. we have a lot of the laughing gulls here and they do sound like they are laughing
such a mix of sizes! really neat.

The Red Knot is rather pretty with his rusty belly. I do like to watch the Dunlin flit about. Here they fly low in great numbers swooping one way and then another.

Excellent series of shots Eileen showing the comparative sizes of the two waders. I usually only see Knot in the winter in their grey, non breeding colour.

Such wonderful shots of the shorebirds, they are just teeming. I was hoping for such when I went to the beach last weekend, but while there were plenty of sand dabs, no birds eating them. I did see just one bird way off in the surf, and swallows overhead. Your Red Knots and Dunlins are such colorful birds compared to most I have seen. The reddish color on the face and chest are so pretty. It's funny that the Dunlins have the black dot on the stomach when they are flying.
So many species all together. I wonder if they have a "pecking order" like chooks and herds of animals? Red Knot, mingling with others, looking happy.

I find it interesting to see animals living together. Those birds seem to be living in harmony. I'm sure people could learn a little more from nature.

Fabulous shots of the birds as always! I wish I had been able to spend more time in your area last week. I hated to leave and now my Maryland family is moving to Texas in a couple of weeks, so I won't be back anytime soon. It makes me a little sad!

How interesting, Eileen. I am very familiar with gulls, as I lived by the Atlantic Ocean for many years, but I never heard of the Red Knot shorebird!

I think one of the Peeps in image 2 maybe a Sanderling? someone else may agree or prove my ID to be rubbish...lol

There's a great mix of waders there Eileen. Like you say, this time of year is just the best for seeing them in their summer finery and a chance to spot any in still partial winter plumage. We hardly ever see Knots in that sort of plumage so it was good to look at your pictures.
