For this week's Wild Bird I am sharing the Roseate Spoonbill I saw during our Florida trips. We were able to see the Roseate Spoonbill in various parks like Merritt Island NWR, Corkscrew Sanctuary and the Circle B Reserve.
This bird has long legs, neck and a grey bill.
The Pink feathers are a deep pink when in breeding season.
The Spoonbill swings its bill from side to side looking for food in the water. The spoon shape helps it to sift thru mud.
The Roseate Spoonbill nest in shrubs or trees and can lay from 2-5 eggs. It is a beautiful birds with its coloring and one of my favorite Florida birds. So pretty, those colors are just so happy and bright.
Oh, gee, I loved this post. I had always before been so captivated by their color and thinking how LOrelei would love them for that--I had not noticed their head and bill, other than to notice its shape. In that one shot, their head almost looks like a skull.
I think I have told you before, but I am so glad you post a picture big enough to enlarge.
Such a pretty color and yet the teeth make it's face seem menacing. Stranger than fiction.

I always am amazed with these wading birds can manage to build nests up in trees. Beautiful color on them and an interesting feeding habit.. Michelle

I went to Merritt Island NWR once and really liked it. I did not see the spoon bills however.
Hi Eileen, I have only spotted these beauties in the St. Augustine area and on Sanabel Island at Ding Darling. You have taken outstanding photographs of the big wading birds. I will be offline after today for about a week. Have a great Wednesday tomorrow!
It's difficult to believe that a bird can be almost pure pink, but there's the proof. What great pictures Eileen and no wonder you like Florida. I must try to get there. Enjoy the rest of your birding week.
They are really the best thing ever! Even after we've been in Florida for quite a few seasons now I still get a lump in my throat every time I see a spoonbill.

It really is so pretty and you captured them beautifully. I enjoyed seeing a little wing action in the last one!!
They are so cute! I have never seen them but hope that I bump into them one day (I enjoy to be around birds and wildlife).

I love roseate spoonbills too - not always easy to find unless one goes out very early in the morning - at least around where I live.

I'm sure having a spoon at the end of one's bill must be so much easier for grabbing food. I know I find a spoon easier than chopsticks, for instance.

They have such a sweet color on their wings. The bills are so unique. :)
We see them frequently here on the Texas Gulf Coast. They are so lovely and while feeding in groups they make a lovely burbling sound.
