Black-bellied Plover

Linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes and NC Sue Wordless
I hope you can join in and share your wild birds and nature scenes.

For this week's wild bird I am featuring the Black-bellied Plover. I have seen this bird on the Altantic coastline during the migration. These images were taken at Chincoteague NWR and some from Bombay NWR. They are also known as the Grey Plover.

The are pretty in their grey, black and white colors. They forage for food on  beaches and tidal flats.

The Black-bellied Plovers breed in the Arctic and coastal area of Canada and Alaska.

Another similar looking bird would be the American Golden Plover. These are not great photos, the birds were a distance away and the zoom makes some photos fuzzy.  I hope you enjoyed my wild bird and post. Thanks for stopping by and for the nice comments.

Till next week's wild bird post. Join in and post your birdies and to see more beautiful and wonderful bird and nature photos please visit:

So pretty! I wouldn't have seen or learned how these birds are called if not from your blog. They might exist in books or google but I don't really look for such creatures everyday :) Thank you for never getting tired of sharing what beautiful nature is out there where you are.

I think half of the coolness about Plovers is their name. Plover. Plover. Gotta admit that is a cool name.

We call the same species Grey Plover but the North American "Black- bellied Plover" is much more descriptive.

Nice job Eileen

interesting, I had no idea that a Grey Plover existed. I have seen 2 different kinds of the Golden one. I like the look of the Grey :)

Wow, what a gorgeous day out too! They are having fun too. I had the rare and delightful experience to catch some geese hanging out today, so I snapped and snapped more, getting ready for Saturday's Critters too! Double win for me!

Beautiful Plovers, Eileen.
I wonder if the color (grey) provides a camouflage for them.
Have a Beautiful day!

Great looking birds. I love the Plovers, one of my favourite wading birds. It's quite similar to our European Grey Plover in breeding plumage.

We have a different looking plover and they are very aggressive when they have eggs in the nest which is just a hollow in the ground.
