Hubby and I often go out for walks on our local fireroads, lately we have been checking on our neighborhood Barred Owl and sometimes I am looking for other birds. On this day March 30th we didn't see the owl but I found this female Pileated Woodpecker.
She was working hard around this tree, it may be her nest. This is almost right across from where we saw our Barry the Barred Owl.
These woodpeckers have been known to drilled rectangular holes in trees looking for bugs and for their nest.
The Pileated Woodpeckers are large birds and mostly black, they have a patch of white on their wings seen while in flight. This is the female wearing the black moustache. The male would have a red line instead of two black lines on their face.

Here is a peek at the lake on a dreary cloudy day walk! The trees should be turning green soon.

Love your photos! I can catch the little Downy woodpeckers so easily, but the Pileated Woodpeckers, are hard to get, what great and lucky shots!! I also saw our Barred Owl this evening, and snapped a photo which I'll post in a day or so -- Unfortunately, it's really being harassed by a crow that I just wish would leave it alone!

Great photos. One year th pileated woodpecker kept drilling a hole at the base of the old dead tree we used to hang the feeders on and eventually the hole went right through and toppled the tree. Enjoy this lovely weather.

PL Woodpeckers are one of my favourite birds. I had been lucky enough o see them on a couple of occasions. Nice to see some again.

The pileateds around here are very noisy. I hear them more than see them. When I do catch a glimpse I never manage to get my camera before they take flight. You got some great photos.

That is such a wonderful neighborhood walk. I hope I start to see more birds on my morning strolls soon ... They seem to arrive about the time most of the snowbirds leave. (Maybe they hide until it gets less crowded.)

WoW!!! eileen, another great group of images. you are lucky to see the pleated woodpeckers, they may be around here but i never see them. i also enjoyed seeing the owl, very exciting and a great capture!! all of a sudden i am seeing a lot of the nuthatches, or i am seeing one, frequently. they are beautiful!!!!

I am used to seeing the little downy woodpecker here on occasion. I was taking a walk about two weeks ago and there was the large woodpecker in your photos. I was so excited and yet no camera with me and when he flew off I was surprised at what a large bird he was indeed!
Pileateds are all over the place on Cacapon Mountain, W.V. I hear their amusing calls all the time, but they are camera shy.
One Mrs. Pileated figured out how to land on the tiny suet feeder.

Love the large woodpecker - love to hear their pecking sound, but up till now I've only seen a surprisingly small one! Still looking for the owl!

The woodpecker made a large hole in that tree! The Barred Owl was a good sighting--they blend into their surroundings so well. You had clouds on your walk --we had snow! The birds here are very confused, especially the robins. I fed them today as I felt sorry for them. I just have to fight off all the squirrels that show up..lol!

I've been hearing woodpeckers calling and pecking like crazy, and we have an owl that calls every night. Based on the sound I think it's a Barred Owl too. - Margy

I have never seen a Pileated Woodpecker but always wished I could. I didn't know the differences in the male/female coloring. Interesting and informative. And who would love a Barred Owl. Barry the Barred Owl is probably out looking for his mate because it is that time of year for them :) Great series, Eileen.

Oh my, great post! I have the pileated woodpeckers and the barred owls, too. And of course the geese on the pond. I remember the first time I ever heard the pileated...I was waiting for something to come swinging from limb to limb, and swoop down and grab me:) ha ha. Love them! And I am hoping to see the owl babies again this year! Isn't Mother Nature divine? Aloha!
I have a lot of cool birds in my yard, but not like you can see from your fire road, Eileen. I hear the Pileated woodpeckers more than I see them, except when they are eating my apples later, I will have to try to get set up to photograph them sometime. I also hear an owl frequently but never seem to be able to find it in the trees, or the hawk.

You had some great shots there, Eileen. I haven't seen a pileated woodpecker since we moved away from Pondside House. I miss the sound, as annoying as it was early in the morning!

Oh wow. My husband JUST saw one of these guys-a pileated woodpecker- near the top of our driveway. So cool.
I love pileated woodpeckers! Once in a while one visits our yard. I rarely see an owl though.
