Happy Monday everyone!
I am sharing the cute Killdeer for this week's wild bird post. It is a medium sized plover. They are considered shore birds but can live far from the water. It is named after it's shrill wailing call.
The Killdeer have a brown back and wings with a white belly. Their bill is short, black and thick.
They have a round head and flesh colored legs. They forage for food in fields and mudflats, they eat insects.
They can nest on dry gravel with little or no vegetation around.
The Plovers are some of my favorite birds, these Killdeer's have the sweetest faces. You just have to love them, lol. I hope you enjoyed my photos and post.

I couldn't agree with you more Eileen, they are a beautiful bird, I was lucky enough to be able to watch one preening once, and the colours in the under plumage was gorgious, lots of orangey buff.

Great shots. We have plovers too. They lay their eggs on the ground and then attack anyone that goes near them. They laid them on the school oval one year and dive bombed the kids when they were playing.
...they can be the goofiest birds.

I love watching them, especially when they have babies.
Awe, these are one of my favorite birds, and their song, sounding out their name is so wonderful to hear. We used to have lots of them making nests around our property, years ago, but they have pretty much all moved on now. I do miss them.

They really are a pretty bird. Have you ever seen one run around acting like it had a broken wing? They do that when they think someone or something is getting too close to their nest (which is on the ground)...so they pretend to be hurt thinking that the predator will chase them. There were always nests at the Lake here when we lived there .... the RV Park managers would rope them off if they could so walkers wouldn't disturb.
That last photo is phenomenal. I love those birds too ..... running from the waves they look so cute.

I was happy to see a killdeer in this post, Eileen. I never saw one before and now I'd know one if I did see it. Out community has two sections. and one side has streets named after local wildflowers, and the other section has streets named after local animals. One of the streets is Killdeer Lane and I was always curious about that name.
I love them but their nests here are so exposed...sorry about the linky problem....Michelle

So nice to see your Killdeer photos. We have a lot of them here, even though we don't have any water near us. I didn't realize they were a shorebird. Very interesting.

Thanks for the meories of Killdeer Eileen. As I recall, and like most plovers, they are very vocal and I think the "killdeer" call is the origin of their name? Enjoy the rest of your birding week.

These are lovely little birds. I never heard of or saw a plover until I moved to New Zealand and found some in the paddock next to the house :)

WE have killdeer here around the water. They were always a childhood favorite. I always wondered whats or of home the sand and gravel made.
Hello Eileen!:) Excellent captures of a killdeer. Plovers are one of my favourite shore birds,... it's their sweet little faces, but I have never seen a Killdeer. I didn't know they could nest far from the water.

I love the Kildeer. One knows Spring is here when they show up. Always with a nest in one of the pastures. Hard to find though. Super shots of this one.

Your comments about the bird's shrill call make me want to hear it. I'm thinking it would be neat if blogs allowed a sound component where you could click and hear the sound of the animal.
They are such pretty birds - we had a nesting pair in a vacant field nearby for years, until new owners moved in and put horses out in the pasture. Their cries really are sorrowful! Hope you are enjoying these last weeks of summer. xo Karen
I've always enjoyed seeing the killdeers as we used to have them nest on our country lane going to the house. It's one bird that I just don't see here in town, and I missed their sweet call when I moved into town. You got some beautiful shots of them Eileen! I didn't realize their eyes were so "doe" like ;) very sweet!

We had no killdeer here this year, but a couple of years ago we had a nest in our driveway. They like to lay their eggs in the gravel. :)

Killdeer are one of my favorites too! They have such sweet little faces! I posted one last week with baby chick hiding under Mom.
I can spot them easily now, because they have the TWO stripes, as opposed to the Semi-palmated Plovers who have one! I recently was at a place that had both... so cute! Thanks for sharing! Hugs!
