Happy Monday everyone!
Terns, Terns and more Terns. There are 15 various Terns listed in my field guide book for North America. But, on this post I am only sharing the Sandwich Tern. My first sighting of the Sandwich Tern was at Chincoteague. I was happy to see the Sandwich Tern again while In Florida near Daytona Beach. These photos were taken just south of Daytona Beach at the Ponce Inlet and Lighthouse Point Park.
You can't miss the Sandwich Tern with it's sharp black bill with a yellow tip. It is small to medium sized seabird and gull like in appearance. They have long pointed wings, grey above and white below. and legs are black.
They have a shaggy black crest. The Tern plunges and dives for their food.
Below two Sandwich Terns and bottom right I believe is the Royal Tern with the orange bill.
Just to show an assortment below is a gull, a few Royal Terns and one Sandwich Tern in the middle.
Closer look at the bill of the Royal Tern compared to the bill of the Sandwich Tern.

These are a delight Eileen! Last week I was showing a young relative from down under some of our local scenery and I managed to get a tern into the lens - very distant and nothing so magical as these! YAM xx

I don't think I've ever seen a sandwich tern. Royal terns --- by the thousands. I'll have to keep a closer eye on the terns when we go to the beach.

I've seen this birds.. But I didn't know the names..
We certainly don't see them here. They look distinctive and stoic.

Eileen - you brought a smile to my face with the mention of Chincoteague - the one time we visited, we were nearly carried off by some very large mosquitoes!!! I would have preferred to see the Sandwich Terns! Lovely shots in this post!

For some reason, I find terns very beautiful birds and look for them every time I go to the beach. Your photos are really great and I appreciate the information about the lovely bird.
Hi Eileen, Lovely photos of the terns! Just glancing quickly I would have said they look a lot like gulls but seeing them side by side you can see the difference.

I wonder if these are the same terns as on Plum Island in MA? I went to see those once and loved it but I don't remember the specifics. They are terrific photos as always.

I love the Terns they are so beautiful in flight. We have only two terns in our neighborhood, the Common Tern and the rare Black Tern( which I have seen only at a distance and have never been able to capture a picture, sadly). These are lovely pictures, Eileen ...

Hi Eileen, Gee, the Terns are really pretty birds! I have been trying to get out to my spots to do some birding but it is hard as many spots near the lakes are flooded off limits. The government is pumping water out of Lake Paradise to prevent further home and street flooding here. I have been able to get to a few spots to take pictures. Maybe half of the birds are not here - we should be getting migration soon. Have a good day tomorrow! Hope all went fine with your Florida friends.
I always wondered what a Tern looked like as I use the word a lot in crosswords. I love their shaggy hairdo.

Terns have a unique body shape, always nice to see them. I've never seen the Sandwich Tern.
