Saturday's Critters # 480

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

Hubby and I enjoyed a short getaway just one night in Lewes Delaware. We stopped first at the Bombay Hook NWR, Prime Hook NWR and Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach Delaware. The images on this post are from Bombay Hook wildlife refuge and at the Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach Delaware.

1. Feb 7th, the Snow Geese, a huge flock was seen on the road leading into the Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge.

Click on photos for better viewing!

2. These large flocks of Snow Geese are too hard to fit into one photo. This is distant shot is trying to show there were at least a few hundred Snow Geese on this field.

3. A closer look at these cute Snow Geese, they are all white with black wingtips.

4. Winter months can be a great time on the Delaware shore to see various ducks species. Below are some of the birds we saw at Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge. The Great Blue Heron, Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, Tundra Swans, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, Yellowlegs, female Hooded Mergansers and the  Northern Pintail.

5. A group of Ruddy Ducks, they are cute with their long stiff tail and the scoop shaped bill.

6. The Northern Pintail is an elegant duck with a long neck and a long pointed tail.

7. The Tundra Swans are a common sight in the winter months, all white with a black bill that slopes away from the head.

8. Silver Lake, Rehobeth Beach Delaware we saw a few Gulls, one Great Blue Heron and a big flock of Canvasback Ducks.

9. A distant shot of the Canvasback Ducks and there is a Great Blue Heron on the shore.

10.  A closer look at the Canvasback Duck,  the male has a pretty Chestnut colored head and neck, a white body with a black rear. Females are a pale brown head and neck with a grayish body.

Bombay Hook NWR is one of my favorite places to visit, there is always something to see there.

Thank you for sharing your critters and post!

Hello Eileen :=)
WOW! I have never seen so many geese and ducks in such large numbers. What a fantastic birding experience. The Snow Geese are attractive birds with those black wingtips. I have always enjoyed seeing the very distinctive Northern Pintail duck. To come across so many water birds must be thrilling. Thank you for this virtual experience, and thank you so much for hosting.
Have a great weekend
All the best.

Dear Eileen,
I am completely overwhelmed by the amount of geese! Wow! I don't know if I've ever seen a single snow goose, but I definitely know there couldn't have been nearly that many. I was also very happy to see the swans, ducks and other waterfowl. You will also see a lot of critters from me today, including many waterfowl.
All the best and happy weekend ❤️ Hugs - Traude

Ouch, I'm thinking, as the closeup of the Snow Geese shows they landed in a field with some pretty big stalks of something still sticking up. I just think of their little paddle shaped feet, they can't move about easily with sticks all around. But with that many, maybe they will push the sticks down! Thanks for your comment on my blog! Happy weekend!

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Barbara! The birds and geese seem to love the corn fields, they must find love of leftover corn on the ground. Have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank You Traude! I am always happy to see the Snow Geese, they only visit in the winter months so a sighting is a treat. I appreciate your link and comment. I have been enjoying your series on your Costa Rica trip! Have a great weekend!

The snow geese really are cute up close and how thrilling to see so many. I love those graceful swans too. What beautiful photos this week! WOW!

Phil Slade said...

Hello Eileen. If just one of those hundreds of Snow Geese turned up over here there would be hundreds of twitchers out to see it every day until they were all sated. Nice wide view pictures of the geese.

Delaware looks to be a very exciting place to see a variety of birds. And of course the Ruddy Duck population of the UK has lately been eliminated because of their illegal immigrant status. I don’t think there are any left hiding away now.

I love all those Canvasbacks milling around together like that. Nice post Eileen. Thanks for the link today.

Mae Travels said...

I love your snow geese at Bombay Hook. We were there but not in that season. I appreciate all the links and I will visit them when I have time from my birding festival. That may happen soon as it’s raining here in San Diego!

Thanks to you and all the others who post birds. Birding is a great way to spend time!

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Phil! Twitchers were going crazy over a Lapwing being seen in Baltimore Maryland a few weeks ago, of course I missed seeing it. Another time maybe. Delaware is a great state for bird both in the winter and summer. Have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Mae! I am sorry the weather is not cooperating in San Diego for the bird festival. Have a great time and happy weekend.

The snow geese are absolutely amazing I've never seen that many geese in one place in fact have never seen that many birds in one place I don't think of any kind also I would love to see the swans

Penelope Notes said...

Sometimes Snow Geese appear in my neck of the woods, too, covering entire empty fields. Their white feathers are the kind of "snow" that's fun to see. No melting or shoveling required to remove them … they just fly away. :)

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Sandra! The Snow geese are awesome sight to see, such a huge flock. Have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Marai! The Snow Geese are my favorite kind of snow to see. Have a wonderful weekend.

The first time we saw an enormous flock of Snow Geese was in March several years back. It really is a sight when they all decide to take off together or all come in for a landing. Great shots of all the ducks and swans. Amazing that they were created with insulation against the freezing temps and waters! Hope you are having a nice weekend.

EricaSta said...

Thank you, Eileen for hosting. And I enjoyed reading again here, there are wonderful captures around. The ducks are really fascinating. We love watching them in summer on our sea nearby the town.

Hi Eileen, Thanks for taking us along to Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge and Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. Wow, when you said “a huge flock” of Snow Geese, you really meant it! Hundreds? Thousands? Amazing. That first collage image is really a great example of one to click on and enjoy the larger view. Later, in image #8, bottom, center view … I wonder if one of those homes in the background is Biden’s vacation home? 😊 I enjoyed all your photos. As always, thank you for sharing and hosting Saturday’s Critters. Wishing you and hubby happy days ahead. John

eileeninmd said...

Thank you John! It is neat seeing these large flocks of snow geese. Their sounds can be very loud when taking off too.
I think the Biden home has more acreage, these houses are right next to each other. Take care, enjoy your day and happy weekend to you!

Bombay Hook is one of my favorite places to visit but alas only virtually through your wonderful pictures. I'm always happy when I see that is where you are taking us! Thank you (and I would love to visit this refuge in person someday.)....... The snow geese reminded me of when we were in New Mexico during Fall migration -- that's the only place I've ever seen that many of these beautiful birds -- and the swans were there as well. I'm glad to see both species are still doing well. Loved all the ducks too and thank you as always for your IDs.
