Saturday's Critters # 546

Welcome to Saturday's Critters! Hello and Happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

A short break from our Arizona trip and photos. I have some birds from my yard and neighborhood.

1. Some of my daily yard birds, the Northern Mockingbird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, White-throated Sparrow and the Blue Jays.

2. The next five mosaics are from our walk on the C&O Canal trail and at Great Falls NP in Potomac Maryland.

Some blooms off the C&O canal trail,  a Yellow-rumped Warbler, a Mallard on the trail, a distant look at some Terns flying over the river.

More from the C&O Canal trail , American Goldfinch, Hooded Merganser, Carolina Wren, Louisiana Waterthrush.

The Slider turtles were plentiful in the canal off the C&O trail.

Lots of wildflowers seen off the C&O trail at Great Falls and a cute doggie.

3. Back in my yard, the Carolina Chickadee took up residence in one of our birdhouses.

4. A morning walk to our local lake, Prettyboy reservoir. We saw the usual birds, the Canada Geese, Double-crested Cormorants, Eastern Bluebird and some first of the spring wildflowers.

5. Our walk at the Hashawha Nature Center, we saw some spring flowers blooming, an Eastern Bluebird, Canada geese with the goslings, not sure if the bird third down on the left is a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Gray Catbird, Red-winged Blackbird, geese family on trail.

6.  These are photos from another morning walk on our local fire road, the Pink Lady Slippers are starting to bloom and the Big Leaf Magnolias are blooming, there were the White Dogwood trees blooming, I captured the bottom of a Baltimore Oriole high in the tree top, we also saw some wild pink Azalea blooming and a view of the lake from the trail.

On the same day May 3rd, we saw the Black Bear right off our local fire road. It was not far from my neighbors yard. I think it was the same bear that knocked over our trash can on our deck and bent a shepherds hook pole and tore apart my hummingbird feeder.

I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday  I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.

Thanks to all my visitors and for your past and present comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves and respects wildlife. Thank you for linking up a critter post.

Wow, you have beautiful birds in your yard and nearby! We really mostly have pigeons and cute ravens. I´ll try to get pics of the latter. The other day there was one who picked up after people - it was a sad sight. A human drops rubbish, a bird cleans the area... now who´s got more a sense for nature, huh? Happy Critter´s day!

It’s great to see your backyard so active, Eileen. Other than for the Northern Mockingbird we share many of the same species and we also feed crows every day. They wake us up at the crack of dawn each day which I am sure drives the neighbours crazy, but nowhere near as crazy as their lawn mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers etc drive me!

Capturing images of so many feeder birds must require a lot of patience! Woodpeckers are great to see at feeders because you can pick out way more of their markings. Thanks for hosting!

Wow, you had a lot of birds this week, plus Mr. Bear. Sorry he got your hummer food, he must have been in bear heaven eating that nectar! I've actually got a bird, and don't know it's identity.

Marie Smith said...

Too close an encounter with a bear in my book. Yikes! Love how the turtles line up on the log. Both turtles and bears are not critters we have on the island.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Mae for your link and comment! I do not actually have feeders, I just sit the peanuts and suet balls on the deck railing. I do enjoy seeing all the birds that come for their treats. Take care, have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Barbara, for your link and comment. At least the Bear did not break my hummer feeder. I do bring them inside now at night. Take care, enjoy your weekend.

Good morning, dear Eileen, once again these are magical scenes with familiar and unfamiliar birds. And I really enjoy your report again. I've been meaning to draw one bird or another for a long time. Let's see if I can manage it on Sunday.

I'll be writing a little later today. We went shopping for bread and wanted to be back straight away. A small accident stopped us. Nobody was hurt and yet it had to be discussed...

Thank you also for your kind comments. All the best for you and continued good recovery.
Hugs and best wishes from Heidrun

Oh, dear Eileen, the bear seems to be causing a certain amount of unrest ;-) An exciting sighting - but the birds are a lot less of a problem - and you see a large number of them (and very pretty birds) in your yard and in the walking areas close to your home. The blue jays, cardinals and eastern bluebirds are particularly colorful here. The animal sightings and waterfalls on the C&O Canal trail are also impressive. Many beautiful birds, a really cute doggie, and there is also a lot of wonderful nature to see! I found the lined-up turtles particularly funny here :-D
I hope you are feeling much better from your fall injuries! All the best, Traude

Thank you Marie, for you visit and comment. The bears are usually scared of people, they run away quickly.
Take care, have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Heidrun, for your translated comment and your link! I am glad no one was hurt in the accident. Take care, have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Traude, for your critter link and your comment. I am lucky to live in an area with a great variety of birds as my neighbors. I like seeing the turtles lined up on the log. I am doing better, as long as I do not overdo it, using my hand. Take care, have a great weekend.

So many colorful birds and others that visit your yard. Great photos. I'm always happy to see the cardinals that you post. Wow! A bear visitor. Our kids had a bear on their driveway last week that proceeded to come up to their house. Our son had to scare it away. That happened at noon! They have to be vigilant since our grands love to play outside. Happy weekend to you!

Jim and Barb's Adventures said...

A bear sighting, how cool is that?!?!? Maybe not too cool if it is messing with your garbage cans. I am surprised your jays and cardinals coexist. It seems like our jays chase off any other birds in the area.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Nick, for your critter link and comment. The Bluebirds are one of my many favorite birds too. Have a great day and happy week ahead.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Ellen, for your comment and visit. The black bears seem to spook easily, unless they have babies with them.
Take care, have a great weekend.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you for the comment! Sometimes the Jays come flying in all loud and spook all the other birds away. They have to announced their presence. Have a great day and a happy weekend.

RedPat said...

Wow, so many different birds you see, many without leaving your yard, Eileen.
I'll be back next week with a critter.

Jeanie said...

You've seen some beautiful birds this time (as always) but a bear? Yikes! I think I could do without that one!

Thank you Diane, for your critter link and your comment. Turtles are fun and I like seeing the bears. From a distance.
Have a great weekend.

Wow, I imagine a black bear can create havoc in their search for food. We had a raccoon a couple years ago tear apart a couple bird feeders and a hummingbird feeder. I had trail cam video of it hanging off a bird feeder. Little rascals.
I love all the various birds you found and identified.
Thank you so much for hosting and I hope you are continuing to feel better from your mishap.

What a great post...I just loved seeing all these, but oh, what fun to see the turtles on logs...those were the highlight of the post for me...except maybe the wren. I used to have a blog friend that posted turtles and there would be so many you could not count them all.

Linda said...

I love the mosaics and I think it’s a great way for pictures of the bear since he is partially hidden. By putting the views together, you can kind of make a picture in your brain of the whole bear.

Hello, Eileen - Nice shots of colorful birds, lovely flowers, turtles on a log, big blue skies, etc. Bears are scary. I've seen a lot of news lately on bears being spotted even near the residential area in northern and central Japan.

Hello Eileen
Many thanks for sharing your lovely photographs and mosaics.
It was nice to see that dog too ... what a cutie.
Can't say the same about the bear though ... scary.

Wishing you a happy month of June.

All the best Jan

Natasha said...

Wow, Eileen, I'm so thrilled, I have finally managed to be able to comment on your post, after struggling for weeks on end. ;-)

It's such a delight to savour each of your images. Your Oriole looks way different than our Black hooded and Golden Orioles here.
The Cardinals always stand out. Such prettiness. I'm excited about your nesting Carolina Chikadee.
That Black Bear seems to be quite a brat.

The red-eared sliders that were initially introduced in our part of the world as pets have now started causing duress to the local species of turtles, I read some where. I used to have them as pets back in the Philippines, and once here too.

Thanks so very much for hosting.
Have a brilliant rest of the week.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Natasha, for your link and comment. There are so many species of Orioles, we can see a few different ones here, the most common is the Baltimore Oriole and the Orchard Oriole. We do have a native slider turtle here, thankfully I think they are doing well. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.

eileeninmd said...

Thank you Jan, for your visit and comment. The bear was more scared of us, it turned and walked away.
Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
