Our latest trip, July 31 through Aug 7th, hubby and I were on a trip to Alaska. Our first night was in Anchorage Alaska, we spent 3 nights close to Denali Nat'l Park and Preserve and the last 2 nights were in Glacier View Alaska. We flew on Alaska Airlines from BWI in Maryland to Seattle WA. At Sea-Tac we had just over an hour for our next flight to Anchorage Alaska. Arriving in Anchorage we picked up our rental car and hit the road for some sightseeing. These are images from our first day in Anchorage. The daylight hours were long, the sun rose around 5:30 am and did not set until around 10:30.
1. Only a 20 minute drive from our Anchorage hotel we drove on the Seward Hwy to Beluga Point, Cook Inlet. I read the Beluga whales could be seen in this area mid July through Sept when the salmon are plentiful. We did not see any whales but the views were beautiful. Sept 21, 2024 will be a day for the Beluga Count, open to the public. During the Sept 2023 count, 331 Beluga whales were counted.
View from Beluga Point lookout, the Cook Inlet
2. Heading back toward our Anchorage hotel, we stopped at the Potters Marsh Coastal Refuge right off the Seward highway. The boardwalk is nice except part of it is right next to the Seward Hwy, with cars and trucks zooming by and the Alaska Railroad tracks, so it was very noisy.
3. A view of the coastal refuge, looking toward the Cook Inlet and the Seward Highway.
4. I am not sure when the birds in Alaska migrate south for the winter. We did not see many at the refuge. I believe what we did see were the Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and we saw the Wilson's Snipe.
5. I was told these birds could be the Greater Yellowlegs.
I wish I could balance this well on just one leg.
6. We did see some ducks too, not sure which duck we saw here.
7. We did see the Belted Kingfishers, at one time I think there were 3 flying around us. The bird on the right has a small fish in it's beak.
8. The Belted Kingfishers would fly around and then come back and land in the same bush.
It was a long first day between flying and then driving to the Beluga Point, taking a walk on the refuge boardwalk. It was time for a dinner and check in to our Anchorage hotel for one night. My next Alaska post will be on our visit and stay near Denali National Park and Preserve.
I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.

Alaska is a former tourist destination! And I remember that a friend was in Alaska before the corona pandemic. She inspired us with her stories...
...so I'm particularly pleased, dear Eileen, to read about your experiences here. I enjoyed the first part and look forward to the next posts. What an adventure.
Best wishes and have a pleasant week, Heidrun
I still train to flamINGO, as my friend advised, standing on one leg.
A word-joke as my hubby is called Ingo.
And today I need birder´s help!
To a great Saturday, sadly cloudy and cool here...
Hello. I've never been to Alaska, but I'd like to someday. Unbelievably beautiful scenery. You also saw several different species of birds. Thank you for sharing your Alaska trip.
I'll get back to you a little later! 😘 Traude
It must have been an enjoyable holiday with many places of interest.
Love the Belted Kingfisher!
Happy weekend and thanks for sharing.

Hello Eileen,
A great series of photos from your trip to Alaska.
I think the Belted Kingfishers are beautiful, a type of kingfisher that does not occur here in the Netherlands.
I wish you a good weekend.

What a wonderful trip to make... Lovely starter post, now ready, set, go! YAM xx
sorry you missed seeing whales but wow what a view. and so much beauty, and other things to see.. waiting to see the rest of Alaska, I would be ok with that much daylight but not when it goes dark all the time..
The great yellow legs look so pleasant and relaxed.
I will almost certainly never get there, but the wildlife must be fabulous, especially the birds found on Attu and the Pribiloffs. Did you make it out to those islands?
Incríveis as fotos que consegues fazer e nos mostrar! Lindos lugares e bichinhos!
beijos, chica e ótimo fim de semana!
Glad you had a lovely trip to Alaska. We used to live in Fairbanks, it's a beautiful place. That's too bad you didn't see any whales but it seems you saw other birds that you don't see back home. Great photos, thanks for sharing. Have a nice long weekend and thanks for hosting.
I love these photos, thanks for sharing. My mom and dad took a vacation to Alaska years ago and loved it. They were there when it was daylight even at night and said that was very weird.

interesting place with beautiful critters....
This looks like the most wonderful trip. You've seen so many remarkable creatures. Wonderful photos, Eileen!
I got to spend 3 weeks in Alaska a few years ago and there's a lot of driving around to see things. But it really is a wonderful experience! I love your photos of the Kingfishers. What a great trip! Happy weekend!
Dear Eileen, thank you for your kind visit to my blog! Alaska sounds like a very interesting trip. Almost 40 years ago I was in northern Scandinavia (mainly Finland, partly above the Arctic Circle), and back then I also had my own experiences with the long northern nights. That was very interesting for me because I discovered then when I naturally like to sleep (from about 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. That hasn't changed much since then, even though I've gotten older.). You see, I'm not a morning person ;-) That never worked when I had to go to office - and now, when we always have plans, it rarely works. But at least I'm getting closer to my old wish... It's a shame you didn't see any beluga whales, but there was at least some interesting bird life and I'm pretty sure we'll see other animals and great nature in future posts.
All the best and have a nice weekend, Traude

Your last shot is my favourite.
Belugas are interesting critters to watch. They are very hard to see at sea level. If you can get on high cliff the view improves.
The Belted Kingfishers are wonderful. What a treat to see them. Happy weekend to you!
Good morning Jeanie, thanks so much for the comment and visit. We did enjoy our Alaska trip, the week flew by.
Happy Labor Day weekend!
Thanks for the visit and comment! Take care, enjoy your weekend.

We enjoyed the scenery along the way. Have a great weekend.
Thank you Traude, for your link and comment. Alaska was a great trip, we have been once before on a cruise and our stops were in different ports and cities. I am a morning person and I like a dark room for sleeping. I do have some Alaska critter for my future posts. Take care, enjoy your weekend!

Thank you Red, for your visit and comment. I would have loved to see the Beluga whales. Have a great weekend!
Thank you Ellen, for your visit and comment. The Kingfishers are a treat to see! Take care, have a great weekend.
I'm with you, Eileen. It would be wonderful to rest on one leg the way some birds do. Doesn't work for me haha ... I simply topple over. :)
That's quite a jaunt from your home to Alaska. I loved how you just jumped into the trip and went looking for whales and birds. I'd love to go to Alaska. My parents went a few times and they did like you. Fly, rent a car, and start looking. My dad had a cousin that lived in Anchorage so having somebody local helped.
Thank you Maria, for your link and comment. Take care, enjoy your weekend.
Thank you Yogi, for your link and comment. We were ready to do something, after sitting on planes for more than 8 hours. We didn't have to go far, these places were close to our hotel in Anchorage. Take care, have a great weekend.
Your Alaskan adventure sounds incredible, and the images from Anchorage must be breathtaking! Although you missed seeing the Beluga whales, it seems like you had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful views and unique landscapes. I can’t wait to see more from your trip! Happy weekend. Hello Eileen :)
Those Kingfishers are beautiful and so is the landscape. When I needed to renew my driving licence, I was asked to stand on one leg with arms outstretched. Needless to say I failed the test. :( The Yellow legs are artists!
Have a great weekend, and thank you for hosting Eileen.
Thank you for hosting. This is my first time to take part in this fun challenge. Your birds are lovely.

Best wishes
Thank you Baili, I appreciate the comment and your visit. I am sure the winter months in Alaska are the snowiest times, too cold to visit at that time. Take care, enjoy your day!
Eileen, I’ve been looking forward to seeing your Alaska photos ever since you mentioned, in a reply, that you would be flying via Seattle. Your travels are impressive and thanks for sharing your Alaska visit. Many years ago wife and I visited and stayed at Alyeska Resort and I believe I recognize your second image as a shot along the highway on the road from Anchorage going south along well-named Turnagain Arm. Enjoyed all your photos … excellent bird captures! Thanks, as always, for sharing and please excuse my late posting of this comment. Hope you and hubby are having a happy week! John
Thank you for your comment John! It was a quick trip only a week but we enjoyed the trip and the National Park. You are right about the name Turnagain Arm. The views along there were beautiful. Have a great day!
Me ha encantado tu reportaje. El Martín pescador es muy distinto del que hay por aquí. Estoy deseando ver las siguientes entradas de Alaska. Un abrazo.
Thank you Teresa, I appreciate your comment. The Kingfisher is one of my favorites. Take care, have a happy day!
