This post continues with our little getaway to the Eastern shore of Maryland, we stopped on the way home at the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge.  We saw so many birds, Eagles and Osprey were plentiful. There were Egrets, Herons, Red-headed Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatches, various shorebirds and gulls.

1. Below are an Osprey couple, one Osprey  eating a fish perched on the side of the nest.

My Merlin App showed just some of the birds seen and heard at the Blackwater wildlife refuge in Cambridge Maryland.

2. Seen below are the Brown-headed Nuthatch top left and the Eastern Bluebird top right. Bottom left is the red-headed Woodpecker and a Killdeer on the right.

3. We saw some Great Egrets hanging about in the wetlands.

The Great Blue Herons are a common sight to see along the wildlife drive.

4. My Merlin App picked up both the Lesser Yellowlegs and the Greater Yellowlegs.

5. The Ospreys and Eagle sightings were plentiful.  I think both the Ospreys and the Eagles are impressive beautiful birds.

6. There were two Eaglets in the nest, this photo is heavily cropped.

7. This pair of Eagles posed in a pine tree that was next to the wildlife drive.

8. The sun was reflecting on the Glossy Ibis

A Killdeer with two chicks at the visitor center.

Killdeer chick looked cute, it was seen on the visitor center parking lot.

I hope you enjoyed my bird sightings at the Blackwater Wildlife refuge, these photos were all taken from my car window. My reason for not being perfect photos.

Those eagles are impressive. We have a pair on a nearby lake. They usually nest. Once in awhile they will fly over our yard. It is a delight!

Oh yes, dear Eileen,
I absolutely enjoyed your bird sightings at the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge! The amount of wildlife you saw and heard was truly amazing, and I'm so happy for you! Because of our "acquaintance" with the bald eagle in Courtenay, I was especially pleased to see the pair of eagles you were able to photograph. (I was sorry that "our" eagle was without a partner. But perhaps this fate was deliberately chosen, who knows...)
Incidentally, we also had the opportunity to see and photograph an osprey a little later – you're right, they are impressive birds too! Thank you so much for sharing all the beauty and...

...all the best from Austria 🤗.
Thank you for your kind comment!

Great photos of the birds you saw. Some of them are new to me and others are ones I have seen before. Just looking at your Merlin screenshots it struck me how widespread some birds are. This morning I saw some house wrens flitting about.
The eastern bluebird had to be one of the prettiest birds around. The glossy ibis caught my eye. I had never heard of them and they are gorgeous.

Hi Eileen, another delightful set of images in this edition of Saturday’s Critters. Especially enjoyed the Eagles and Eaglets. I wonder if you have been following the Eaglets in the Big Bear Valley, California nest? I know you are familiar with the FOBBV YouTube stream. Today I’m linking up my post from two weeks ago. Thank you so much for your kind comment, another one is not necessary unless you just want to. 😊 Well, I thought about you and hubby this last week. I have been on a 7-day Holland America cruise Seattle to Alaska and back. I recalled your Alaska trip (last year?) and thought how you and hubby would love the cruise. My favorite was the scenic cruising into Glacier Bay National Park. You would love the birds! Thanks for hosting and sharing Saturday’s Critters. Hope you and hubby have happy days in the week ahead! John

I do enjoy watching the Big bear Eagle cam, the eaglets are fun to watch growing. We first went on an Alaska Cruise in 2004, it was a Holland America Cruise from Seattle. We also went into the Glacier Bay National Park, I remember seeing for the first time an orca whale in the bay. We flew to Anchorage and went to Denali National Park in 2024, it was our last big trip. Hubby now has stage 5 kidney disease and our travels are few and limited.
Take care, enjoy your day and the new week ahead.

Good morning Eileen, beautiful and descriptive post (I really appreciate the list of bird names for those I'm not sure of) Killdeer I know very well and miss them it's like they have disappeared from Minnesota which is so sad I so enjoyed hearing them and being watchful when mowing as they randomly build nests right in the grass! I fear that's one of their downfalls out here, as we have too many (hungry critters that it's not safe) Enjoy your week ahead and summer in all of its glory! Yay for us.
