Saturday's Critters # 638

Welcome to Saturday's Critters! Hello and Happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." John Muir

I am sharing a mish mash of photos, some of my yard birds, our grand-dog Winnie the Corgi, the neighborhood Peacock, my common yard birds and a couple of archive images.. I am still behind posting my photos.

It's time to turn the clocks ahead an hour, I am looking forward to the longer daylight.  Now all we need is more sunny days.

Click on images for better viewing.

1. Due to the weather and a bad ice/snow storm, our grandson's birthday party had to be postponed.  We were finally able to celebrate Mason's 4th birthday on Feb 1st.  Below are Winnie the grand-dog, Sophie and Mason playing with the airplanes.

Wyatt's 5th birthday party on Feb 15th was only a few weeks away. Our grandsons are only 11 months apart in age.  Our granddaughter Sophie will be 2 in July.

2. The neighborhood Peacock has been seen laying on our driveway, maybe the ground feels warmer from the sunshine. It has been super cold, our neighbor has put a heat lamp on his porch for the Peacock to have a warm roost at night.

3. Not sure if your see through the tall pine tree, but the Power Company is cutting down and trimming some of the trees. We had a huge dead tree across the driveway in the forest that if it fell it would be on top of our house. They took down 3 dead trees and left the wood on the ground.  There were two trucks that had these tall white towers that held up the bucket for the guy doing the cutting.  I am glad it all went safely.

The tree trimming company trimmed all the trees on our front yard too.

4. The food I put out for the birds disappears quickly, I am seeing Blue Jays, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows.

The American Birding Association has named the Horned Lark as the 2026 Bird of the Year.  These images are from my archives. I have seen the Horned Lark along the road at Bombay Hook NWR and along the rural back roads in my area during the winter.

My photos are not the best taken from the car window. I believe my photos are of the female Horned Lark.

Feb 2-4 in my local bird news, a Crested Caracara has been seen in the Prettyboy area.  I have not seen this bird in my neighborhood but it has been seen a few times by various birders in the Prettyboy Reservoir area.  I would say it is a rare sighting to see a Crested Caracara in Maryland. I can only assume the last storm we had brought this bird to our area.   My sighting and the photo below was in Florida and other sightings were in Costa Rica. I will be watching over my yard to see if it flies by, wishful thinking.

It's a shame that your grandson's birthday had to be postponed due to the weather. The pictures of your grandchildren are enchanting.
At the same time, I am touched by the story of the peacock seeking your company. It is very thoughtful of your neighbour to set up a heat lamp for the bird. Best regards to him!

...and thanks to you, dear blog friend Eileen, for your wonderful post.
All the best, Heidrun

You didn't bring Miney to the birthday party? Had to google how a Crested Caracara looks like...an absolute beauty! Have a great weekend, Eileen!

Oh, now that you mention, Eileen! Still in jet-lag I do not look up when we switch to summer-time (but I love the longer days!!!).
To fun birthday-parties and being together so close! My Brother is 5 1/2 years younger than me, so I was a helping Mom, rather than his sibling. And I still kinda am...
Oh, you do have a nice neighbor!!! And great your trees are taken care of, too. Fingers crossed for your bird views - have a crittery Saturday!

It's been cold here this winter too, but now we've had higher temperatures than usual all week.

Sad they had to wait for the birthday, hope all that snow is done for this year. the babies are boys now and growing quickly. Hope you get to see the Caracara, I like you photo of the one you saw.. so sweet to put a light for the peacock...

Dear Eileen,
Oh wow, a Caracara at your place! That must really be quite rare! We saw some in Costa Rica—impressive birds. But you don't have to go that far; you already have loads of (to me) very special birds visiting your yard.
That thing with the trees must have felt threatening. I'm so glad everything turned out alright!
The photos of your grandchildren are wonderful. They are so cute and grow up so fast. It's always good when we can enjoy the time with them, isn't it? (And of course, it's lovely to see grand-dog Winnie the Corgi again 🐾🐶)
All the best from Austria an thank you for you lovely comment,
Traude

Does that Peacock have a mate?

It's a treat when a bird not normally seen in our areas makes an appearance and makes the news. I hope the Crested Caracara comes by your place for a visit.

Thank you for hosting the link party again, Eileen. I always enjoy stopping by and seeing what everyone has been sharing.

And that peacock in the snow… I just love that photo. Something about the elegance of the bird against the quiet winter background makes it so striking. It really stayed with me.

And happy birthdays to your grandsons!!!

I am a bit late...almost forgot it. You have nice grandsons...and they like aeroplanes yet. Maybe they will become pilots. Never heard of this impressive bird. I had to ask the translator what it says in German...but also: I never heard about it. But he looks so majestetic....
Have a good time and all the best

great captures today but you know the children stole the show. all blonde and beautiful, i'm sure the party was a huge success. all of the tree companies in this area have been very busy this winter, there have been so many storms. i have been seeing all the same birds, except the peacock, i did not see blue jays all winter until it snowed. i am going to go back and read the link about the bird of the year. i am curious to see what criteria they use in selecting the bird. how nice that you have seen one, i don't think i have!! have a great weekend, thank you so much for hosting. say hi to the hubs!!

Hello Eileen what a fun post, thanks for sharing the kiddos fun, and weather can be tricky this time of year but as long as they got to celebrate all is good. It's so fun seeing your peacock hanging out and even your neighbors are enjoying him too. In Europe they travel around the neighborhoods like a Canadian Goose or other geese but not so many peacocks doing that here, my peacock has been spouting out his call he does every year during the mating season, and he's been stretching out his tail feathers has yours done that yet? Enjoy a great week ahead and take care.
