I am sharing a collection of photos are from my archives. Birding in the Spring is a great time to see migrating birds that just happen to just by on their way north.
Click on images for better viewing.
The first couple of weeks of May is an awesome time to visit the Delaware beaches to see the shorebirds migrating and the horseshoe crabs laying their eggs.
These photos all taken 5-15-2015, hubby and I visited various birding hot spots to see the migrating shorebirds. The hot spots we visited just this one day were Slaughter beach, Mispillion Harbor and the Dupont Nature Center, Port Mahon Road and Bombay Hook NWR.
Below a Ring-billed Gull, Laughing Gull, Dunlins and the Red Knot.
Delaware at one time was known to have the largest population of spawning Horseshoe Crabs. The Red Knot uses the Delaware beaches as a food stop, they feed on the Horseshoe Crab eggs. The Horseshoe Crabs have been declining which in turn affects the Red Knot population. In 2023 there was a recovery plan to reverse a decline of the Red Knot. I would assume there would also need to be a plan to help with the decline of Horseshoe Crabs.
This Spring I am hoping to get to visit the Delaware beaches during the migration of the shorebirds.
I am wondering what everyone is watching lately? I am into the Virgin River series on Netflix and Young Sherlock and Scarpetta on Prime. My latest reading list has been Harlen Coben's " I will find you", Shari Lapena's "Everyone here is lying" and the latest in the series from LJ Ross's called "Berwick". They are either are from the Libby website borrowed from my local libraries or from Kindle Ebooks.
I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.
Thanks to all my visitors and for your past and present comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves and respects wildlife. Thank you for linking up a critter post.

Beautiful captures, Eileen. What a joy to see all these magnificent birds. Thank you for sharing, and I hope you have a lovely weekend.
Such a special place and time of year. Beautiful pics!
So cool! I remember those crabs from the Jersey Shore as a kid!
wow..that's a lot of gulls!! They look amazing.
What great birding you had back then! I hope the migration season this year will also be a lot of fun for you.
Looking back through the archives is both impressive and educational. It’s also sad, as so many species are threatened by environmental factors – and by humans in general. What can I say!? It’s almost impossible to turn back the clock.
I had to smile at the TV series, as we watch – almost – the same programmes. At the moment, it’s the BBC series *Paradise*. Reading ? My Comic about Karl Valentin ....and Dressed for Success.
Wish you, dear Blogfriend Eileen, a very good week. Thank you for sharing and for hosting.
Greetings by Heidrun ❤️
I'll get back to you a little later with a proper comment 😊.
Glad to read your post, Amazing views from Delaware beaches, Awesome Birds. Thanks a lot for hosting. Happy Weekend.
The crabs look a bit spooky, but the birds... HOLIDAY!
Netflix and such is of no use here - I´d get it in German. My DVD does not work atm... I am at that and have loads of series recommended by fellow blogger River :-)
Hello Eileen,
You have taken beautiful pictures of all the different birds. There were a lot of birds where you took the pictures.
Take care, and have a nice day and weekend!
Seagulls in large number is a beauty
Hello Eileen,
Beautiful series of photos of the migratory birds.
I think there are so many different species.
I wish you a lovely weekend.
All the best, Irma
Thanks for sharing the beautiful series of critters. Interesting to know about those poor Crabs that you helped.
Let's hope you can visit Delaware and have a good time.
In the meantime: enjoy a springy weekend!

Some gorgeous photos here, Eileen... I have a particular love of sea and shore birds and these delight my eye!
I enjoyed Young Sherlock - and am a great fan of L J Ross, but am on a long waiting list for the latest book (I borrow via BorrowBox/Library), so in the meantime have listened to some Stuart McBride, Marion Todd, and Richard Osman books, all highly recommended! YAM xx
Eillen, é sempre muito bom ver teus bichinhos de sábado nessas lindas footos!
Feliz Primavera por aí!
beijos, chica e tudo de bom!
I added Virgin river to our list, to see if Bob will watch it. I hope you get back to the Delaware. looks like you landed in bird heaven in 2015, this is a LOT of birds... I think I can hear them talking..
Looking back at simple pleasures brings those feelings up again. I was also please by the crabs and their trails. I’ve seen them in FL and was surprised by their ancient look - like dinosaur age.
Crabs are interesting critters! Lovely seeing sandy beaches.
So many nice pictures of the birds dear Eileen. And I never heard about a horsshoe crap..Sounds funny and they look funny.
Have a wonderful spring-time.
All the best
Violetta
Love seeing all the water birds, we have seen some but not all of them. I'm not a tv watcher so never use Netfix. I am an avid reader, love cozy mysteries and I also love to do jigsaw puzzles. Have a lovely week.
I hope you do get to visit the Delaware beaches this spring! Your past photos of there certainly show there is lots to see with never a dull moment! That's a wonderful experience to help the Horseshoe Crabs along in their journey!
Hello, Eileen. Happy Spring! Horseshoe crabs are fascinating creatures and we see them here in Australia too, where they are considered a delicacy by some people. Great photos, thanks for hosting. Have a great new week.
...thanks Eileen for sharing this fabulous collection. We are entwined in nature just like the Red Knot and Horseshoe Crab are. Be well.
This was wonderful Eileen. Your shorebird posts are always great and make me wish to visit the Delaware shores! Also your pics are such good references for IDing shorebirds which is so hard for me. Thanks
The crab is making tracks like our turtles do. Mom is watching Scarpetta (she read most of the books) and has to get back to Virgin River.
Only one critter in this post but it's a critter! The crab story was especially interesting. I've never heard of a Dunlin Gull (or the others, for that matter!). We just call them gulls -- that's what makes you a better birder than I!
Beautiful beach photos. Love the horseshoe crab. We don't see them in Miami
We just finished watching Scarpetta. I saw afterward that it did not receive good reviews. We thought the series was okay.
I love the photo of the crabs and the Dunlins in flight is beautiful too. I love the beach and the variety of birds you can see. AND I am so happy to be taking part in the party today. It really feels like Spring now. And thanks so much for writing to me Eileen and all of your concern and love. Hugs, Diane
Eileen ~ wonderful Maryland shore photos
and like your Netflix viewings and books you read ~ I have similar likes ~ Happy Weekend to you and your family ~ Hugs, ^_^

Marvelous photos Eileen and I enjoyed particularly the information on the horseshoe crab having posted about one recently. Thank you so much! Always a pleasure to visit. Have a wonderful day and weekend :)
There's always LOTS OF action with shore birds.
So many wonderful shorebirds, Eileen. I hope you get to the shore again this year.
The laughing gull laughs, but no one asks at what.
Yet it drew me in—as though the laughter belonged to something I was meant to understand.
The Eastern shoreline is so full of wonderful sea birds and fowl! I often saw horseshoe crabs along beaches on Long Island, NY. I read recently that they arebecoming endangered.
I am also enjoying Virgin River on TV and also some PBS series. I am reading The Briar Wood Club for this month's bookclub-- we read Horse by Geraldine Brooks last month for book club--very good!
Buenas reuniones de aves.
Buen fin de semana Eileen.
Un abrazo.
It’s unusual for me to be on my computer on a Saturday, but I was checking on something so I thought I would skim through my Blogger stuff. It’s almost seashore season. Your post made me excited for summer. As far as TV, I just finished Virgin River till next time. I hope there is a next time. No I will have to make a decision every night as to what I will watch. I try not to watch continuous things, but I am hooked on Virgin River. Enjoy the weekend.
Thank you Jeanie, for your link and comment.
One critter is enough for me, it is a cute one too.
The Dunlins are little shorebirds, they hang out with the gulls on the beaches. Take care, have a wonderful weekend.

It is good to have loads of choices and series.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend.
Dear Eileen, I wasn't familiar with the Red Knot bird – I had to Google it to recognize which of the birds you showed it was. It's certainly an interesting connection between the decline in Red Knot populations and their preferred food, Horseshoe Crab eggs. I hope they'll manage to increase their numbers again!
Regarding your question about TV series and books – I've seen Virgin River, but I haven't watched the (so far) final season yet. Young Sherlock is also on my list. I'm currently binge-watching "The Mentalist" on Netflix, from the first to the last season. I wasn't interested in the show before, but then it was recommended to me, and now I enjoy it. And I'm currently reading another installment of a fantasy epic by Tad Williams: one of the books in his "Osten Ard" series, titled "The Witchwood Crown." (Not sure if this is also the title in English.) I love his books, but starting them means wading through thousands of pages. Williams' protagonists go through many adventures, are often in mortal danger, have to rise above themselves, sometimes even form alliances with "enemies," learn to "do the right thing," experience that solidarity usually gets you further than going it alone, etc. I like these kinds of "coming-of-age novels with an action twist," and I don't mind that it's fantasy. The main thing is that it's entertaining 😊.
Thanks for your kind comment and for hosting!
All the best from Austria,
Traude

If I see a series on TV or in books that is highly recommended I will try it out myself. I do tend like the mysteries and detective series.

That's an amazing big bunch of birds, Alfred Hitchcock woul be proud!
WoW!!! what a "gull" of a day!! excellent images and some great information, much of it i did not know. we get some of those gulls here and i see a few horseshoe crabs, they are always dead. it does feel good when you can aid in the health of the sea shore community...but i guess the circle of life is more powerful at times. we have not been finding good shows to watch, but we have watched a couple of coben's shows and enjoyed them. i guess they are scripted from his novels. the only reading i do are short magazine articles and blogs!! have a great weekend and many thanks for hosting us critter lovers!!
I love the idea of giving a stuck crab a helping hand as these critters typically face many dangers.
I've never seen a horseshoe crab in person but they are so unique. Loved the pictures, thanks for sharing.
After finally getting a new post done, I linked the wrong one! I guess I'm still a mess but that's the reason for a second one! Hugs!
Terrific shots.
Hello Eileen
I enjoyed the photographs you've shared today ... a lovely look back in the archives.
I do hope you get back to the Delaware beaches in the Spring.
I wish you a happy weekend.
All the best Jan
Wonderful photos. The horseshoe crabs are pretty cool.
Great photos. I like the tracks the crabs leave behind.
These are all great! Those Horseshoe crab tracks are so cute!
Good to hear the story and the Red Knots and Crabs. I do hope both are making a grand recovery. Lovely to see all the Turnstones on the beach and in the air Eileen. Thanks ofr hosting and commenting. Have a lovely week ahead.
All the birds are amazing and I've never seen horseshoe crabs moving along before.
Hi Eileen! I enjoyed all your photos and especially the interesting info about the Horseshoe crabs. I love to see humans helping animals in the wild. I’m curious about the Crabs … will have to do a Google to read more about them. I am curious about why they get stuck upside down. I’m guessing a wave flips them over just as they are getting close to the beach. You asked what everyone is watching? Well, I’ve been reading a lot. During my blog break I got interested in Richard Proenneke, the man who single-handedly built a log cabin by a lake in wilderness Alaska in 1968 and then lived in the cabin, mostly all year, for the next 30 years. A book about him is “One Man’s Wilderness”. He kept daily journals of his experience and those have now been published and that has been some fascinating reading for me lately. Thank you, Eileen, for sharing and hosting Saturday’s Critters and for your kind comments on my blog. Best wished to you and hubby for the week ahead. John
I love seeing moms and their babies
Thanks for these great looking shore birds! I haven’t watched TV in a long time. My eyes get tired just using the computer so that’s it for my screen time.
Your beach shots are just wonderful! I hope you get to the Delaware beaches again soon. I am also watching Virgin River at the moment, though I feel like it has become a bit too predictable now. I preferred the earlier seasons.
Thank you Lisa, for your comment and your visit.

Take care, Happy Sunday! Have a wonderful week.
Thank you John, for your link and comment..
Yes, the waves knock over the horseshoe crabs as they make their way onto the beach. If they are not able to turn over, the gulls will peck away at them. Your book sounds interesting, they could make that story into a movie. I am not sure if I could survive living in the Alaska wilderness.
Take care, Happy Sunday! Have a wonderful week.
Thank you for your comment and your visit.

Great photos of the migrating birds you have captured over the years. I loved seeing the photos and reading about red knots. I have never heard of such a bird and they are unique. Also interesting about them earing horseshoe crabs and their population is in decline. Nature is all connected and we plunder species at our peril.
Thank you Yogi, for your link and comment.
Birdwatchers look forward to seeing the Red Knots stopping at the shore on their migration.
Take care, Happy Sunday! Have a wonderful week.
