Saturday's Critters # 432

 Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

Our weather has been all over the place, the temperatures can drastically change. It is officially Spring, even though it does not always feel like it.

1.  On March 8th  our high temperature for the day was in the 70's, the bull frog sounds were all over our yard and at the neighbors. We found at least 6 of these frogs in our little pond. The next day our temperature was back down to a high in 40's.

2. March 8th photos continue, more frogs and their eggs.

3. March 8th, after walking around the yard we took the grand-dogs for a 2 mile round trip walk on the fire road.

4. While walking on the fire-road I could hear the Pine Warblers calling. It is nice to hear them again, in my yard I also heard my first of the season Eastern Phoebe.

5.  March 9th our temperatures dropped and we had some snow. I am not sure what happened to the frogs and their eggs in our pond. Can they handle freezing temperatures. I hope they survived. I happened to notice this Hawk sitting in a tree between our yard and the neighbors yard. I wonder if the hawk was eating frogs.

6. Below the photos show the same hawk possibly the Red-shouldered Hawk from March 9th and on March 11th I saw the Hermit Thrush out my front window. It likes sitting in one of our Rhododendron bushes next to the house.

7. March 11th, a closer look at the Hermit Thrush outside my window.

Saturday's Critters # 431

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

These images are from our local walks with the grand-dogs, on the fire roads and to the lake. We did go on one walk without the dogs, to see the local Bald Eagle's Nest. It's just a short drive around to the other side of our lake to see the nest. Sorry doggies, they are not getting inside my car, they only take local walks on our fire roads.

1. Feb 22nd,  a large flock of Common Merganser were seen at our local lake.  Not sure if everyone will notice, but on the middle right side of the photo I captured a Belted Kingfisher sitting in a tree. There is a Merganser in the water right underneath of the Kingfisher.

2. My camera's zoom is not that good, a fuzzy look at the Mergansers.  There are three males ( white with green heads)  and three female Common Mergansers.

3.  On Feb 24th  at the local Friendly Farms pond, we saw lots of Canada Geese and Ring-necked ducks.

4. These photos were from my cell phone, no zoom but an overview of the pond , geese and ducks.

5. On March 1st we took the grand-dogs to another one of our local fire roads. This was a 2 mile walk.

6.  On 3-2-22 we left the dogs at home and drove around the lake to see how the Bald Eagles nest is doing. Below are Trumpeter Swans, Common Mergansers, Bald Eagles, Ring-necked Ducks and a Canvasback Duck and Canada Geese at Friendly Farms pond.

7.  On 3-2-22, at first I thought these swans were the Tundra Swans.  I posted them on the Maryland's bird page and was told they are the Trumpeter Swans.  Not a lifer for me, a first time sighting of these swans at our local lake.

8. Below are the Barred Owl, hubby , Winnie and Nibbles going for a walk and some views of the fire roads. This was a 1.3 round trip walk.

9.   On 3-3-22 a zoomed photo of the Barred Owl. We saw this owl on the walk back to the house.

Some times I catch some birds in my yard or just outside my yard. We are surrounded by trees, I can hear the birds so I know they are close by.

1. A mosaic of my Northern Flicker, Northern Mockingbird and a Dark-eyed Junco.

2. From my kitchen window I watched two Northern Flickers at the end of our driveway. One disappeared behind the car, but this one was pecking at something on the ground.

3. The Northern Mockingbird hangs around the yard, it is finding berries to eat.

4. Below the Dark-eyed Junco showed up in the same bush as the Mockingbird.

5. The twigs and branches are always getting in the way, I had a small group of Dark-eyed Juncos finding food around the yard.

6.  In the woods across from our driveway, I watched this hawk sitting in a tree. I am pretty sure I saw it's red tail as it flew to the ground. Then I lost it among all the trees and branches.

7. Besides hearing a Belted Kingfisher, I saw a nice size group of Canada Geese at our lake.

8. Canada Geese at Prettyboy Reservoir.

9. Grand-dogs Winnie and Nibbles enjoy their walks to the lake and on the fire roads.

10. Back at home, Nibbles and Winnie want some play time.

Saturday's Critters # 429

 Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

Hubby and I enjoy some walks on our own without the grand dogs. On these walks I can enjoy looking for the birds and taking photos. These photos are from a walk on the fire road to the lake, I call this trail the Eagle nest trail. The Bald Eagles have been nesting here for years, I hope they have a successful nesting this year.

1. Below are the pair of Bufflehead Ducks, Canada Geese, Common Merganser in flight, a flock of Common Mergansers, White-throated Sparrow, Cedar Waxwings, American Robin and the Bald Eagles.

2. The pair of Bald Eagles are on the nest, later one flew off and sat on a nearby tree.

3. The nest and this Eagle were across the lake and a good distance for my camera.

4. We did see this pair of Buffleheads near the cove.

5. A Common Merganser flew back and forth, not far from the Eagle's nest.

6. The Canada Geese are always seen near this little island in the lake.

7. We spooked a large flock possibly 20-30 Common Mergansers, I was able to catch some of them as they were flying away from the cove. I counted around 16 in the photo below.

8. We also saw a flock of American Robins off the fire road, they found some berries to eat.

9. On the fire road walking back to our car, we saw a flock of Cedar Waxwings. They found some berries and were chowing down.

10. Prettyboy Reservoir, is one of three reservoirs owned by Baltimore City.  Prettyboy is the second largest and most remote of the three reservoirs located in Baltimore county.

We never know what we will see at our lake, last year in this same spot I found a lone Long-tailed Duck. There are fire roads all around the reservoir.
