Saturday's Critters # 536

Welcome to Saturday's Critters! Hello and Happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

On the last day of our getaway on the way to Bombay Hook NWR, we made a quick stop at the Silver Lake In Rehoboth Delaware. Usually this lake is full of the Canvasback Ducks. I was surprised at the low numbers of ducks on this day.  I checked out my previous years visit to this same lake and the Canvasback duck numbers looked way higher.  I included present and previous pictures in this post.

The Canvasback Ducks, are large ducks that winter on the coast of the USA. The adult male has red eyes and a redhead, they have bright white sides, wings and back. They have a long sloping forehead and bill. The female has the same bill but has a tan/brown head.

Feb 10th 2024, the Canvasback Ducks seen on the Silver Lake, Rehoboth Delaware.

Not many birds/ducks are seen this year, where are they?

These are photos from my visit on Feb 7th 2023, just one year ago. You can see the number of ducks was higher during our 2023 visit.

These are photos of the Canvasback Ducks seen on the Silver Lake Rehoboth Delaware on Feb 13 2018.

On this day there were so many ducks I could not fit them into one photo.

These are images from my Nov 29th 2013 visit to Silver Lake, Rehoboth Delaware. During this visit In November 2013, we saw more Canada Geese than ducks. The bird and ducks seen in the mosaic below are the American Black Deck, Double-crested Cormorants, Common Loon, Ruddy Duck with a Canvasback, not in a close up view were some American Wigeons.

I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday  I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.

Hubby and I enjoyed a short getaway just one night in Lewes Delaware. We stopped first at the Bombay Hook NWR, Prime Hook NWR and Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach Delaware. The images on this post are from Bombay Hook wildlife refuge and at the Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach Delaware.

1. Feb 7th, the Snow Geese, a huge flock was seen on the road leading into the Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge.

Click on photos for better viewing!

2. These large flocks of Snow Geese are too hard to fit into one photo. This is distant shot is trying to show there were at least a few hundred Snow Geese on this field.

3. A closer look at these cute Snow Geese, they are all white with black wingtips.

4. Winter months can be a great time on the Delaware shore to see various ducks species. Below are some of the birds we saw at Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge. The Great Blue Heron, Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, Tundra Swans, Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, Yellowlegs, female Hooded Mergansers and the  Northern Pintail.

5. A group of Ruddy Ducks, they are cute with their long stiff tail and the scoop shaped bill.

6. The Northern Pintail is an elegant duck with a long neck and a long pointed tail.

7. The Tundra Swans are a common sight in the winter months, all white with a black bill that slopes away from the head.

8. Silver Lake, Rehobeth Beach Delaware we saw a few Gulls, one Great Blue Heron and a big flock of Canvasback Ducks.

9. A distant shot of the Canvasback Ducks and there is a Great Blue Heron on the shore.

10.  A closer look at the Canvasback Duck,  the male has a pretty Chestnut colored head and neck, a white body with a black rear. Females are a pale brown head and neck with a grayish body.

Bombay Hook NWR is one of my favorite places to visit, there is always something to see there.

Can you believe, it is March? Winter is slowing going away! YAY!

On our shore getaway we stopped at the Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware to see what kind of ducks were hanging around.

The Canvasback is the largest North American bay duck. They winter on the coast of the USA, near lakes, bays and rivers.

They have red eyes, a redhead and a black breast, bright white sides, wings and back. The female has a light brown head and neck, a dark brown chest and the sides are a grayish brown.  It also has a dark bill.

I appreciate and thank everyone who links up their post and for all the wonderful comments!

Saturday's Critters #62

Saturday's Critters #61

Happy weekend, everyone!  I am looking forward to Spring, I wish it would come soon...Ok, it's Saturday and it's time to share your critters.. Any kind of critter will do, even a new or old post.. I appreciate everyone who has linked up in the past and for those who are linking in on this week's critter party. And of course I always appreciate my blogging friends just stopping by for a visit.

On the way home from Blackwater NWR we made a quick stop in Cambridge, Maryland  to see the ducks..I shared some of these ducks in an earlier Wild Bird Wednesday post but I wanted to share just how many ducks were in this one spot.. In the winter this is a great place to see all kinds of ducks..  above are the Lesser Scaup..different than the Greater Scaup because they have "bumps" on their heads..

A variety of ducks can be seen..like the Canvasbacks, Scaup and American Wigeons..

I think I see some female mallards too.

Beyond the pier I see some Ruddy Ducks. They are recognizable by their upturned tails..

Above is a pretty American Wigeon.

Either direction you looked you see more ducks.. This is the view toward Rt 50 bridge and the Bill Burton fishing pier..

My youtube video of the Cambridge Ducks..sorry it was windy on this day..but the sound of the wigeon is cute..I hope you enjoyed my ducks and post..Again I thank you for linking up to the critter party. I also appreciate the visits, comments and the support of my blogging friends................... Have a happy weekend!

Thanks to Tex Theresa aka Tex, I was able to add this link up button and thanks to  Jennifer for creating my photo badge.

Birding Delaware

December 5, 2013

I am linking up with NF Winged   and  Skywatch Friday

I am sharing some birds and sky shots from last weekend and my birding in Delaware.  It was a cold two days but the skies were mostly blue and the birds were everywhere. I was happy!!

Indian River Inlet in Delaware, it was across the river on a sand dune where the two Snowy Owls were sighted.  I had a lot of places to stop and look for birds, so we spent just a few minutes looking at the Snowy Owl. At the inlet jetty, we did see a few Surf Scoters, various Gulls,  lots of Common Loons and some Black Ducks and DB Cormorants were seen flying by.

Canada Geese, Silver Lake in  Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. At Silver Lake, we saw the Canada Geese, Mallard Ducks,  a high count of DB Cormorants, Common Loon, American Black Ducks, a few Canvasbacks and an American Wigeon.

The Common Loon looks like a different bird straight on then the usual side view I see of them.

A Ruddy Duck with the white cheek and long tail and a Canvasback has the chestnut red head and a white body. Both of these ducks were seen at the Silver Lake in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware.

After leaving Silver Lake we headed to Gordon's Pond State Park, Delaware.

At Gordon's Pond we saw lots of Great Blue Herons, a couple of Great Egret and Mallard Ducks were seen at the Gordon's Pond, Delaware. We did have a great view of a Belted Kingfisher, I only wished it would have stayed still for a second or two.

Sunset at Dewey Beach, Delaware. There were not many clouds in the sky, so the colors were not spectacular.  It was still a pretty sky. We spent the night at the Best Western in Dewey Beach close to all the birdie action.

I hope everyone enjoyed this series of birding in Delaware and my sunset shots. Thanks for visiting my post and  blog and I always appreciate your comments.

I am starting a new MEME called Saturday Critters..Saturday Morning 8am EST...join in on the party and post your cute critters.
