I thought this shot of the male Cardinal was neat.

The look on this squirrel's face is just priceless.

Somehow the date on my birdcam is way off and I have to figure out how to change to the correct date.So please ignore the date of 05/01/12 we are not even there yet.

Birds & Cats

I know there are a lot of bloggers friends that love cats and I hope my post does not make my readers upset with me.  Recently, I read an article about birds killed by turbines in one of our environmental magazines. I honestly think that the wind turbines are horrible for birds, especially sitting in the path of migrating birds. What really surprised me was they listed domestic cats and pesticides kill tens of MILLIONS of birds annually.

 I would think logically the wind farms can be put in areas away from migrating birds. I read that engineers are looking into various ideas to protect the birds and actually try to keep birds away from the turbines. Suggestions were solid towers rather than lattice style which the birds like to perch on, radar that would slow the turbines down when it detected approaching migrating birds, flashing strobe lights at the top and even changing the color of the tower.

EDIT: As I was playing on the computer this morning and listening to the news I heard the Electric Co or State of Maryland wants to add a monthly fee onto our bills to help pay for a wind farm they want to put out in the ocean. I believe this would be near Ocean City, Md.  Now, this wind farm would be on the Atlantic Flyway for migrating birds and they want me to help pay for it. Are they are out their minds?????

 This is one of the wild cats I have seen recently in my yard. I must find a way to keep these cats out of my yard. Should I call the animal shelter? These cats are wild, they have had no shots from a vet and raise babies in an old car that one of my neighbors keeps in their yard. If anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions.

 My Goldie Girl looks a little upset I will not play ball with her. Goldie Girl recently had her long hair cut      and now looks more like a lab than a Golden Retriever. But, she is still my cutie.

 I do have to admit I am a dog lover and a responsible dog owner. We keep our dog in a fenced-in yard and on a leash while out walking. Now, it would be nice if cat owners were responsible too and either keep their cats inside the house or watch them when they are outside or do they have leashes for cats?  I was horrified when I heard how many birds are killed annually by cats. When I see the  feral cats in my neighborhood, that keep coming into my yard all I can think of is trying to protect my birds and the cute chipmunks that must go into hiding to be safe from the cat. If engineers are willing to work on the problems of the birds & turbines I would think pet owners could find a way to protect the birds from their cats. As far as pesticides go, we are not able to use pesticides around our well water so pesticides are a NO-NO for us.. Also, aren't there a lot of safe organic products that can be used on lawns and plants?

Birds & Critters

For my Camera Critters I have some shots from my Wingscape Birdcam.

I like this capture of the cardinal in mid air it looks cool.

A late evening visitor, usually my Goldie Girl scares them away.  The flash made the raccoon's eyes look blue.

A squirrels reflection, not really... just looks like one.

My crest is prettier than yours!!!

This little piggie is eating all my bird seed.

Move over, I need a drink of water now!!

 

The male Redbellied woodpecker also stops in for a visit.

A large group of Goldfinches and a Mourning Dove.

Along with the male Redbellied Woodpecker above, this must be the female mate.

This Crow wanted a closeup shot taken. Say "AHHH"

Happy Weekend!!!

For my Skywatch Friday  I have some sunset shots from my backyard and some pic's from our walk to the lake.

 

I like the sky reflecting in the shot above, you can see the white clouds in the water. When we walked closer to the lakeshore we spooked off a few Common Mergansers. They flew to the far side of the lake and much too far for a photo. When I scanned the lake with my binocs I noticed there were pairs and groups of Common Mergansers all over the lake. I like seeing the usual Canada Geese at the lake but the mergansers were a treat.

The photo above is not from my lake but, I wanted to show the Common Merganser.

I did not catch them in this photo, but the Turkey and Black vultures always make their way back to my woods to roost for the night. Sometimes, there are as many as fifty flying toward my yard. What a sight!

Above are a  few of the sunset photos taken from my backyard on Sunday. I love how the sun turned the edges of the clouds a pinkish color. The clouds reminded me of charcoal burning in a grill during a summer cookout.

I'll end my post with a pretty Mourning Dove shot from my birdcam. Looks like she is enjoying a feast.

Birdcam shots

Happy weekend! I am linking up with Camera Critters.

I thought I would do a post on my Wingscape Birdcam since a few people were interested and asking about my birdcam. I bought my Wingscape birdcam from Amazon. But I have seen them for sale in various stores that sell wild bird food. The camera uses D size batteries, has a flash and I have an extra Sandisk memory card from my Canon Powershot.

You can also call it a squirrel cam, I have lots of cam shots of the squirrels.

This squirrel is practicing yoga stretches while reaching for some sunflower seeds.

The flash went off during this early morning photo, catching the Pine Warbler and a female cardinal.

Beside the squirrels, I actually do get some bird photos. Here are a couple of Tufted Titmouse and a Goldfinch.

This shot caught the Carolina chickadee close to the camera and the downy woodpecker and my son fooling around with his pickup truck.

It fun to see some of the expressions, like on this cardinal. I do not think it likes sharing with the WT Sparrow.

Some birds look like they are happy to pose for the camera and look right into the camera.

Some birds grab their nut or seeds and look the other way, maybe they do not want their photo taken with their mouths full of food.

 I like this shot of the Titmouse looking at the camera and the Cardinal looking at the Titmouse.

  Right now I have my birdcam held up with the bungee cord on my deck railing and a pergola beam. I set it on auto and adjust how many photos I want it to take at one time.
