"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." John Muir

I am sharing a mish mash of photos, some of my yard birds, our grand-dog Winnie the Corgi, the neighborhood Peacock, my common yard birds and a couple of archive images.. I am still behind posting my photos.

It's time to turn the clocks ahead an hour, I am looking forward to the longer daylight.  Now all we need is more sunny days.

Click on images for better viewing.

1. Due to the weather and a bad ice/snow storm, our grandson's birthday party had to be postponed.  We were finally able to celebrate Mason's 4th birthday on Feb 1st.  Below are Winnie the grand-dog, Sophie and Mason playing with the airplanes.

Wyatt's 5th birthday party on Feb 15th was only a few weeks away. Our grandsons are only 11 months apart in age.  Our granddaughter Sophie will be 2 in July.

2. The neighborhood Peacock has been seen laying on our driveway, maybe the ground feels warmer from the sunshine. It has been super cold, our neighbor has put a heat lamp on his porch for the Peacock to have a warm roost at night.

3. Not sure if your see through the tall pine tree, but the Power Company is cutting down and trimming some of the trees. We had a huge dead tree across the driveway in the forest that if it fell it would be on top of our house. They took down 3 dead trees and left the wood on the ground.  There were two trucks that had these tall white towers that held up the bucket for the guy doing the cutting.  I am glad it all went safely.

The tree trimming company trimmed all the trees on our front yard too.

4. The food I put out for the birds disappears quickly, I am seeing Blue Jays, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows.

The American Birding Association has named the Horned Lark as the 2026 Bird of the Year.  These images are from my archives. I have seen the Horned Lark along the road at Bombay Hook NWR and along the rural back roads in my area during the winter.

My photos are not the best taken from the car window. I believe my photos are of the female Horned Lark.

Feb 2-4 in my local bird news, a Crested Caracara has been seen in the Prettyboy area.  I have not seen this bird in my neighborhood but it has been seen a few times by various birders in the Prettyboy Reservoir area.  I would say it is a rare sighting to see a Crested Caracara in Maryland. I can only assume the last storm we had brought this bird to our area.   My sighting and the photo below was in Florida and other sightings were in Costa Rica. I will be watching over my yard to see if it flies by, wishful thinking.

I am sharing my mish-mash of photos, our walks with Miney, my back yard birds and a visit to see our grandchildren.

Click on images for better viewing.

1. March 22nd, another walk to the Prettyboy reservoir to see the Eagles nest. Our second time to check out the nest only to find it empty again.

2. March 22nd, while we were out walking with Miney the Peacock came for a visit. Who left the gate open? The peacock was sitting on our deck railing when we got home.

3. March 25th, fire road walk with Miney to the lake

4. March 25th, the Peacock was back sitting on the swing set.

5. March 29th, my back yard birds: the Peacock, Eastern Bluebird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Dark-eyed Junco and the White-throated Sparrow.

6. March 29th, on the NCR trail with Miney.

7. March 30th, we took Miney with us to visit with our son, DIL and our grandchildren. Winnie the Corgi had fun playing with Miney.

8. A flashback looking at a couple of my Florida favorite birds seen in a couple of favorite places.

Flashback images are from May 2015  Gatorland in Kissimmee Florida I am sharing a Cattle Egret.  There was a large breeding marsh at the Gatorland Park,  my main reason for visiting was to see all the heron and egrets in their rookery.

From March 2017, a Green Heron seen at the Circle B Preserve near Lakeland Florida.

Happy March everyone, wishing everyone a great month!

March is the month to celebrate new beginnings, March 9th is the start of daylight savings time and the first day of Spring is March 20th.

This is a mish-mash of critters and photos. The images are from the end of January into the beginning of February. Photos of our dog Miney, the yard birds I see daily and our grand-dogs. Our grandsons shared a birthday party on Feb 1st, we were happy to be there to celebrate their birthdays.

Click on images for better viewing.

1. Jan 28th, Miney is a big part of our lives now.  We try to take her for a daily walk on the local fire road. On this day the trail was still covered with snow and the reservoir looked frozen and also covered with snow.

2. Jan 29th, we took Miney for a dog bath to the local dog grooming business. Below is a mural that was in the grooming business.

3. Jan 30th, we took Miney out for a morning walk on the fire road.

4. Feb 1st, our two grandsons Wyatt and Mason had a combo birthday party.  I've posted before about our grandsons birthdays but these images are from the actual birthday party.  Pop-pop is holding Sophie a few days from being 7 months old.

5. Winnie our grand-dog is always happy to see us.

6. The Northern Mockingbird is a bully in my yard, he does not like sharing the food or water.

7. The Dark-eyed Juncos are my winter birds, they are seen in my yard and they enjoy the suet nuggets I put on the deck railing.

8. Critter flashback to March 2024, a mosaic sharing our grand-dogs. Nibbles (no longer with us) the mixed breed part shepherd and Winnie the Corgi.

I seem to always be at least a month behind sharing my critters and bird photos.  These images start off at Jan 23rd.

1. Jan 23rd, my yard birds included the Northern Mockingbird, Blue Jays, Northern Flicker and the Dark-eyed Junco.

2. The Northern Mockingbird has been a bully chasing off all my other birds from the food and the water.

3. The Dark-eyed Junco was waiting nearby for a quick grab and go before the Mockingbird came back.

4. The Blue Jays stand their ground and refuse to be bullied by the Mockingbird.

5. I watched the Northern Flicker getting a drink of water. Even the Flicker had to be on the lookout for the bully Mockingbird.

6. Jan 25th, We love our Miney, she still has a lot of puppy habits.  Since she is still a puppy we need to be constantly watching her. She is quick to grab anything in her sight.

7. Jan 26th, hubby and I like to take Miney out for a morning walk every day.  I think she enjoys the walks and there are so many new scents for her to smell along the fire road.

8. Jan 26th, we visited our son and his family. Any time is a good time that we spend with our grandchildren. I also love seeing Winnie the Corgi, our grand-dog.

Bonus Flashback to Jan2017, another of my Florida favorite birds, the Roseate Spoonbill.

Saturday's Critters # 424

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

For my critter post, I have a few backyard birds and our grand-dogs Nibbles and Winnie the Corgi.

1. This male Cardinal looks like it has a deformed beak. I hope it will survive and still find food to eat.  Poor thing doesn't look happy.

2. Not sure if you can find the two Dark-eyed Juncos, they are finding some food on the ground in our yard.

3. A grumpy looking male Cardinal was seen sitting in our butterfly bush.

4. Winnie the Corgi on the top and Nibbles is on the bottom protecting her toys.

5. Winnie and Nibbles enjoyed our walk to the lake.

6. The fire road is mostly in the shade and the last snow has not melted. Nibbles and Winnie did not seem to mind walking on the snow covered pine needles.

7.  The only bird I saw at our local lake was a Belted Kingfisher flying away.

8. This Dark-eyed Junco was seen in my yard but I have been seeing groups of them flying away from the edge of the roads when I am driving.

Celebrating, our beautiful grandson Mason. Another precious angel for our family to cherish and love.
