My walks with nature in October were on the NCR bike trail and our local fire roads

1. Oct 3rd, our walk with nature was on the fire road with Miney. We were finding some mushrooms along the trail.

2. Oct 14, another walk with Miney. We were enjoying the pretty fall colors. A deer was standing on the fire road, we turned around rather than spook the deer.

3. Oct 17th our walk with nature was on the NCR trail in Parkton. Another deer in a near by field, a Robin sitting high in a tree, the view of bike trail with Miney and the stream.

4. Another fire road walk to the lake and then a drive around the lake to the Prettyboy Dam. There was a big flock of Canada Geese, I had to hold Miney back or she would have chased them away. 

5. I am sharing some of the winter birds I am hearing on our walks.  It is nice to hear and see the winter birds. Some of these are archived photos, it is hard to hold Miney's leash and take bird photos.

6. My Merlin App is picking up the sounds of the Brown Creeper now, another winter bird in my area. 

7. In my yard, a winter bird is the White-throated Sparrow. 

8. Another bird I see in the winter is the Purple Finch. Below is the male and female.

Still over a month behind, I am sharing photos of my yard birds, photos from our walks with Miney and our outings. My post is a mish mash of photos and a few flashback images from our visits to Florida.

1. March 7th,  another morning walk on the local fire road with Miney.  

2. March 7th, our neighbors asked us to let their Goldendoodle out mid-day since they were away for the day. They mentioned we would not recognize Casey, she was groomed and looking more like a yellow lab. We took Miney with us so they could play.  

3. March 8th, another walk on the local fire road with Miney. During our walks I am still looking out for any birds.  Usually I hear more than I see, the Titmouse and Woodpeckers are vocal. I can hear the geese on the lake a little distance away. There were vultures flying around above us.    

4. March 9th, we took our walk on the local George's Creek trail. At this time everything is still looking brown, still winter here. I saw a couple of Brown Creepers, lots of Bluebirds and a Mockingbird. Near by I heard the Canada Geese, Woodpeckers, Song Sparrows, Chickadees and Cardinals.

5. March 9th, a closer look at a couple of the Brown Creepers.

6. March 9th, views from our walk at George's Creek, which flows into the Prettyboy Reservoir. 

March 9th, I heard lots of Bluebirds. They seem to be very vocal this morning.  

7. Flashback another Florida bird is the Little Blue Heron. The bicolored bill looks especially beautiful during the breeding time.

8. Florida Flashback, the Loggerhead Shrike was a common bird we saw in many Florida parks. 

Easter bonus image, we went to an Easter Breakfast with the family. Our grandsons are a little shy near the Easter bunny but Sophie does not mind at all.

For some reason I am not able to comment on Wordpress blogs even when I am signed in. I have tried various blogs and the same happens on each blog.

This is a mish-mash of photos from various days and walks to the lake, on the fire road, a few of my yard birds and a visit with our son's family.

1. Our walk to the lake, it was a warm day.  It was nice to see the turtles out sunny themselves on a log.

2. A larger look at the Slider Turtles, they are always fun to see.  

3. During our walks to the lake, we have seen the Canada Geese hanging in this same spot multiple times. 

4. The Downy Woodpecker is a daily visitor to my yard, it also enjoys the suet nuggets. 

5. The White-throated Sparrow is a winter bird that enjoys the suet nuggets I put out for my yard birds.  One day I saw a female Pine Warbler grabbing a few nuggets, I was sorry I missed getting a photo. 

6. We saw the Brown Creeper during one of our walks on the local fire road. 

7. One day we had lunch with our son and his family and enjoyed watching our grandsons playing on their new playset. The Grand-dogs enjoyed being out in the yard with us all. 

8. A puzzle I completed in early March, the undersea life, the colorful fish are so pretty.

This is my last critter post and linky for 2023. I want to thank everyone who has participated and commented throughout the year.  I hope to see you and your critters in 2024. 

I am sharing some of my yard birds and local birds from our walks around our lake and to the NCR bike trail.  I am still catching up with my photos, these were mostly from November and early December. 

1.  Late fall we enjoyed a walk on the NCR bike trail. My bird sightings were the Brown Creeper and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. The Brown Creeper can be hard to find it blends in well with the bark of the tree.

2. Below are a few yard birds and neighborhood raptor.  A yard bird is the Dark-eyed leucistic Junco, he is a cutie. 

3. In the back corner of our yard, I noticed a flock of Cedar Waxwings.  They found some berries on a nearby tree. I counted 10 Waxwings, there may have been more. 

4. On our walk to the lake, we watched some Blue Jays and a Vulture flying around a hawk perched high in the tree. 

5. At the local lake, we found a Bald Eagle taking a bath. The Canada Geese were not too far away. The bottom right photo is an unknown in my back yard. 

6. Our outings are not always nature related, we do visit with our son, DIL and grandsons and of course we love seeing our grand-dogs Winnie and Nibbles. They are cute critters.

7. The Tufted Titmouse hanging out in our front yard too, this one is sitting in the rhododendron outside our den window.  

8. I've been seeing and hearing the White-throated Sparrows around my yard. Sometimes they come to the deck for the peanut nuggets I put out on our deck railing. 

9. The Blue Jays seem to be the most common bird seen in my yard. They can grab up to 5 of the peanut nuggets at one time.

I am trying to stay some what caught up with reports on my outings and posts. Most of my photos are from my neighborhood, our walks on the fire roads and to the lake.  

1. Feb 12th, our walk on the fire road looking down at the reservoir we saw a group of Canada Geese and a Mute Swan.  The Mute Swans are not native to Maryland but they are seen around the state. The Mute Swans are easy to identify with their reddish-orange bill. 

2. A larger look at the Mute Swan, I really had to zoom in for this photo. The fire road I was walking on is on the top of a hill and there are lots of trees in between the fire road and the lake. 

3. Feb 13th, hubby and I took our walk on the fire road that leads to the lake and to a view of the Bald Eagle's nest.  Along the way I found a couple of Brown Creepers, we saw the usual Common Mergansers and Canada Geese. We spotted the first Bald Eagle on the nest as soon as we got to the lake, the second eagle was sitting off in a tree across the lake. Soon both Bald Eagles were sitting in the same tree. 

4. Feb 13th, the Prettyboy Bald Eagles, this pair have been nesting nearby in a tree next to the lake. I like that they have been returning to the nest for years now. 

5. Feb 15th, hubby and I took a ride to where we saw the Golden Eagle . Usually there are ducks near the boat ramp parking lot.  I think the Golden Eagle has left this spot but we saw various ducks and geese.  Below are the Canada Geese, American Wigeons, Redhead Ducks, Ring-necked Ducks and Bufflehead ducks. I was happy to see this group of ducks some what closer for photos.  Maybe someone was there and threw some corn into the water for the ducks to eat. 

6. Below you can see a closer look at the Redhead ducks, the American Wigeon with the green eye patch and the Ring-necked ducks with the white band on their bill.

7. Feb 19th, our walk was on the fire road closer to home. We are seeing the Common Mergansers and Canada Geese and the Ring-necked Ducks during each visit to the lake. The Brown Creepers have been sighted each time too. The Downy Woodpeckers are seen pecking away and we saw a few of the Golden-crowned Kinglets were bouncing around all over the place. 

8. A Brown Creeper seen making it's way up the tree. These birds are brown with white underparts and have a slender decurved bill. 

9. Feb 20th,  another walk on the fire road close to home. We saw and heard the White-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpeckers, Canada Geese and Ring-necked Ducks and a Bald Eagle some what hidden behind some branches. 

10. Feb 20th, I watched this hawk chasing a Mourning Dove away from my yard. It came right back and sat in a tree in our side yard. It was a small hawk, so I will guess a Sharp-shinned Hawk

Update: David who really knows his birds, says this is a Cooper's Hawk.

11. Feb 21st and Feb 24th, Red-shouldered Hawk perched on a dead tree in our yard. The photos look the same but they were taken on different days.

12.  Feb 24th, we watched our grandson Mason while Wyatt went for his check-up. We are always happy to spend time with our grandsons and the grand-dogs Nibbles and Winnie. They all love their Pop-Pop.
