Saturday's Critters # 602

A mish-mash on daily walks and outings with our dog Miney, birdwatching from my backyard or on the Prettyboy Fire Roads.

1. May 9th, seeing the bluebirds in my yard this season just makes me happy. I hope to see their babies!  

"The bluebird carries the sky on his back."

The bluebird is a symbol of hope, happiness and joy.

2. May 10th, in the backyard a Bluebird and a Mourning Dove are having a conversation.  

3. May 10, we took our walk on another local fire road, wildflowers Fleabane and I am not sure what the tiny yellow wildflowers are called. 

My May 10th Merlin app birds heard on our walk on the Prettyboy fire road. 

I am hearing the Great-crested Flycatcher calling while on our walks and from my bird yard.  They are brownish upper parts and yellowish underparts and a bushy crest.

4. May 11th, Some blooms from our yard, the Columbine, Siberian Iris, Bluebird sitting in Pine tree and I am not sure if the plant bottom right is called Spiderwort?

The House Wren is one of my loudest yard birds, a small bird only a little over 4 inches. This wren is brown with pale to white underparts.

5. May 12th, my backyard we have the Siberian Irises blooming, I saw a cute bunny, our Rhododendrons are looking beautiful. 

6. May 12th, the Worm-eating Warbler is a drab looking warbler with black and buffy stripes on its head. I have been hearing this bird calling from off the local fire road when I am walking Miney.

7. May 12th, I see and hear the Blue Jays in my yard and often on the fire road while we are out walking Miney.  

8. Flashback from last year May 2024, the Scarlet Tanagers have returned to Prettyboy Watershed and my back yard. The male Scarlet Tanager is a lovely color red with dark wings. During mating/breeding season I hear these birds singing while I am out walking Miney on our local fire roads.

Bonus, July 3rd  is my granddaughter Sophie's 1st birthday.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our sweet Sophie.

Saturday's Critters # 548

Happy Father's Day, I hope your day is great! 

 If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. 1. I am sharing a mish-mash of photos from various dates, a walk at the Susquehanna River State Park. Spring is a great time to see lots of bluebells in bloom along the trail. Below is also a Chipping Sparrow, Slider Turtle and the Bald Eagle. 

The Bald Eagles are seen regularly at the Susquehanna River trail. 

2. Back home from our Arizona trip we visited DIL and our  sweet grandsons (they enjoy bubble time out in the yard) and our cute grand-dog Winnie the Corgi. 

3. The Pink Lady Slippers return every year along our local fire road trail.  

4. One day I could hear the Scarlet Tanager ❤️  in my back yard, I scanned the tree tops and found this beauty.  ☺️

5. I am not sure which bird is using this house, one time I looked it was a House Wren and the next time there was an Eastern Bluebird.  

6. One day I looked out my kitchen window and my neighbors Peacock was walking along our deck railing. I think it was pecking at the nuggets crumbs left by my yard birds.  This first sighting was on May 9th, it has been a visitor just about every day. 

7. Our walk on the local NCR trail, we saw lots of the Dames Rocket blooms, is it a Solitary or Spotted Sandpiper (I never saw the front of this Sandpiper), Common Yellowthroat Warbler, Gray Catbird, Eastern Phoebe and a Canada Geese family. I heard more birds than I photographed, heading back to the car I saw a Green Heron, it spooked easily and flew away. 😟

I never know what is going to show up in my yard, one week it was the Black Bear and the next week it is the Peacock. I am glad I am always looking out my windows. You never know what will be out there.

So far May has started off with wonderful bird sightings right outside my windows.  I am a little behind sharing, these images are from the first week of May and they were all taken from my windows.  

For the first time in the 30+ years living here I saw the Red-headed Woodpecker in my yard. It was only for part of a day but I was able to snap away some photos. The Red-headed Woodpecker is a beauty. I believe now I have seen all of the Eastern North America Woodpeckers right in my back yard.

I was able to take a few good shots through my windows, below is the Red-headed Woodpecker on the deck railing. 

The Eastern Bluebirds have been seen going in and out of a birdhouse I have on my deck.  I hope their nesting is a success. 

Below are the female and male Rose-breasted Grosbeak.  They usually stop my yard during their migration north.  

Below is a female Downy Woodpecker waiting for it's turn at the feeders below, they are occupied by the male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. 

From my kitchen door, I noticed this Yellow-rumped Warbler high in the tree top. 

 

The House Wrens and the Carolina Chickadees have moved into the birdhouses. 

 

I do not have photos but I have heard many birds that have moved back into our local forest. Just from my yard, I hear the Ovenbirds, the Wood Thrush, American Redstart and the Scarlet Tanagers. Outside my front window ( the view from my exercise bike) I saw a few Magnolia Warblers, the male was a beauty.

Most days I am found watching my yard birds. I usually see a nice variety of birds in my yard.  On this day I watched a Carolina Wren, a House Wren and a Woodpecker spread out on the deck railing. 

 A Downy Woodpecker looks like a young one begging for food. It was spread out on the railing like it was airing out it's wings. 

 The House Wren seems to have taken over a few of my birdhouses, they chase away any bird that comes close. to "their" home. 

 The Carolina Wren stops by the feeders and deck for a snack. 

A Brown Thrasher made an appearance on this day, sat on the deck railing looking around..

We try to take early morning walks on the local fire road. We've had a streak of hot humid days, it is best to get out early. On this day I watched 3-4 Worm-eating Warblers. I managed to catch 2 of the Worm-eating Warblers in the same tree. The other 2 warblers kept moving around the same area. Their sound or song is one I have become familiar with over the years. They have black and buffy head stripes and they are a small bird 4 1/2 - 5 inches long.

My World, Our World

 Happy Monday,

Hubby and I are happy when we can get out for a walk with nature and of course for the exercise.  On this day we visited one of my favorite local parks Hashawha Nature Center. I have blogged many times about this park, there is always something to see.   

 Here are some of the birds we saw during our walk: Common Yellowthroat Warbler, Cedar Waxwing, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, House Wren and the Eastern Kingbird.

 I really like the thistle, the bees were happy...

 Some different sections of the loop trail we hiked, just me and my shadow. 

 I was surprised to see the Ruby-throated Hummingbird at the tippy top of a tree, it looked like a small dot.

 We saw a heard a few of the Cedar Waxwings. 

 A noticed this bunny as we left the parking lot to start our walk. 

 

Pretty waterlilies, turtles and the Hashawha pond.  

The flowers were looking beautiful, dayliles, roses, daisies and a wild iris.
