Saturday's Critters # 647

Happy Mother's Day to all Moms!  My wish includes all the furbaby Moms too.

1. On the NCR bike trail, hubby, Miney and I had a nice day for a walk.  We was able to captures the female Eastern Towhee and the Eastern Phoebe perched along the trail.  

A closer look at the female Eastern Towhee, she is a beauty. The female has a brown head, back and throat, rusty sides and a white belly. 

Back at home in the back yard, is the Peacock perched on the swing. 

2. Below the Conowingo Dam, the Bald Eagles were plentiful. 

Along the Susquehanna River trail, we saw lots of wildflowers. Top left are the Dutchman's Breeches, top right Yellow Woodland Anemone, bottom two are Bluebells just starting to open. 

We saw lots of the trout lilies. They are one of my favorites, they are a beautiful to see. 

3. On the island in the middle of the Susquehanna River there is a Great Blue Heron rookery. 

Below the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River, we saw lots of Bald Eagles. They stop to eat some fish on their migration north.  I counted five adult Eagles and two juvenile Eagles perched on top of rock in the background.

4. Codorus Reservoir, Hanover Pennsylvania. We had some extra time before meeting the family for lunch, we stopped for some views of the lake.  

Bonus, we met up with my son and his family and my sister and her hubby on Easter Saturday. It was a dialysis morning, but we were able to meet for lunch. Hubby enjoys moments with the grandchildren, like a hug from our granddaughter Sophie.

We gave the grandkiddies their Easter baskets early, they all enjoyed the baskets, especially the bubble makers. It was a Happy Easter.

Saturday's Critters # 578

As usual I am behind, posting my photos on our outings and walks in various parks, my neighborhood and my back yard birdwatching. These are all from November and some December photos. 

1. Nov 1st, this mosaic and the next one are from our walk at the local Leister Park in Hampstead Md. They have a nice walking trail and I can usually find some birds. Below are images of the trail, a flock of blackbirds, a Squirrel and a unknown Hawk, we met and passed by a women and her three Corgis on their walk and there were some beautiful Autumn colors.

2. Also off the trail we saw a flock of Cedar Waxwings eating berries. 

3. On the way home from the park above, I was driving down our street and saw this Bald Eagle on the ground eating something unknown.

4. Nov 3rd, we have many options for our walks around the Prettyboy watershed, this is one of our favorites. We saw a flock of Dark-eyed Juncos eating off the ground and a Turkey Vulture in flight and bottom left are the neighbors turkeys that she raises to sell for Thanksgiving. 

5. Nov 5, Our walk on the NCR rail trail in Parkton, we saw a Great Blue Heron, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Carolina Chickadee, male Downy Woodpecker and a White-breasted Nuthatch.

6. Nov 7th, we drove a little further away for our walk at the Conowingo Dam and Susquehanna River. We wanted to see if the Bald Eagles arrived.  We only saw a few Eagles both juvenile and adult Bald Eagles.  There were plenty of Black Vultures, Cormorants and a Great Blue Heron and we saw a deer off the river trail below the dam.

7. Another walk on our local Prettyboy fire road, I saw lots of berries and a cute bunny.

8. Another fire road walk to the front section of the Prettyboy reservoir, we saw a group of Canada Geese and we saw that the female Hooded Mergansers have arrived for the winter. 

9. Dec 7, I looked out my kitchen door and noticed our missing Peacock was back on our deck.  He gobbled up some of the peanut suet nuggets that I feed my birds.

10. Bonus: Nov 10th, our granddaughter Sophie was baptized.

These are photos from our visit to Conowingo Dam and the Susquehanna River. We saw lots of Bald Eagles, Vultures and great view of the Great Blue Heron rookery. 

1. The Bald Eagles both adults and juveniles were all around the dam area and river. Some were standing on rocks along the river, in the trees and perched on the dam sign. 

2. On the photo below there are two juvenile Bald Eagles with one adult Eagle. 

3. How many Bald Eagles can you find in the tree below? I found 8 eagles. 

4. This Bald Eagle found something to stare at, a possible meal?

5. The warning sign at the end of the island. There were 2 juvenile Eagles with one adult.

6. The Black Vultures are plentiful at Conowingo. There are warning signs about these vultures eating the rubber off of car windows that are parked in the lot. 

7. At Conowingo I think the Black Vultures outnumber the Turkey Vultures.  They hang out in big groups in the trees and on the ground. 

8.  Here is a Turkey Vulture showing off it's wing span. 

9. The Great Blue Heron rookery is on a small island in the middle of the Susquehanna River just a short distance from the Conowingo Dam. It is great to see so many Heron nests, they are doing well. 

10. I always enjoy seeing the Great Blue Herons, they have a nice rookery at Conowingo.  

11. It is amazing to see how many herons there are, on or around the tiny nest.

Saturday's Critters # 516

I am sharing a variety of photos, some from our yard, our neighborhood walk on the fire roads and to our local Prettyboy Reservoir.  There are some photos from our outing to Conowingo Dam and the Susquehanna River State Park and more from the local NCR bike trail. BTW, my header photo now shows a view of neighborhood Prettyboy reservoir and the Prettyboy watershed. 

1. Sept 17th, usually I see various species of Warblers in September they love to eat the berries from the Devil's Walking Stick plants in our yard.   This year I am not see as many different species as in previous years,  that can not be a good thing. I did see the male and female Black-throated Blue Warblers but I was not able to get their photos. The Cape May Warblers and a few Tennessee Warbler pictured in the mosaic below.

2. Sept 19th, more images of the Tennessee Warbler and the Cape May Warblers. 

3. Sept 19th, another walk to the local reservoir. Again I am seeing the same Great Blue Herons, Belted Kingfishers, Solitary Sandpipers, unknown raptor standing in the mud, more images of the Sandpipers, Great Blue Heron and the Green Heron.

4. Sept 30th,  in my yard is a Northern Mockingbird enjoying the Devils Walking Stick berries.  

On the same day as above, these our the birds seen during our walk to the lake. Below are the Canada Geese, Solitary Sandpipers, Belted Kingfisher, Double-crested Cormorant and the Great Blue Heron.

5. Oct 1st, the Blue Jays are sitting in our rhododendron bush outside the den window.  Some times they are attacking the window or just sitting there fussing loudly. 

On the same day as above our walk was at the NCR Bike trail, we saw some fall flowers looking beautiful and some colorful leaves and berries.  I heard more birds than I actually saw, the birds were hiding from me.  

6. Oct 3rd, we drove to the Conowingo Dam and the Susquehanna River State Park.  Below are the Bald Eagles seen around the dam and on the towers. We also saw lots of Great Blue Herons, some Double-crested Cormorants, Vultures and Pigeons.

We drove a little further, and took a walk at the Susquehanna River State Park trail.  Views of the river and bridge, mushrooms, the Rock Run Gristmill, Great Blue Heron and more Cormorants. 

We enjoyed our lunch at the picnic area and then tried to walk (the little trail was overgrown with weeds) around the nearby pond.  Here I was able to see some Eastern Bluebirds, Mallards and some Wood Ducks. 

7. Oct 4th, another walk to our local Prettyboy reservoir. The lake water level is still very low. We need more rain.  In the mosaic below are views of the reservoir, fungi, a Great Blue Heron and the Solitary Sandpipers are still hanging around and we saw a small group of Killdeer. 

It looks like I am staying behind sharing my photos, almost a month behind and I have one more day from our Ireland trip to share.  

I will be away from my computer for a few days after Saturday, just a heads up I will be late commenting.

I will be away from my computer, as always thanks for participating with Saturday's Critters. I hope you can visit some of the other links and I will be visiting and commenting as soon as possible. We are celebrating our 33rd Anniversary!

Hiking and birdwatching is always fun at the Susquehanna River State Park. Spring time,  the wildflowers along the trail in the park are a beautiful sight. An added bonus is stopping at the Conowingo Dam and fishing pier to see the Bald Eagles. 

1. In April lots of  migrating  Bald Eagles can be seen at the Conowingo Dam and Susquehanna River. We also saw a Bald Eagle on a nest across the river.

2. If you click and enlarge this photo, you can see quite a few Bald Eagles sitting on the rocks next to the river. Both adult and juveniles are hanging out together. 

3. A proud looking Bald Eagle perched in a tree above the parking lot. 

4. The island in the middle of the river near the dam is a Great Blue Heron rookery.  

It is great to see these herons doing so well, they were also seen up and down the river. Perched on rocks and looking for food and taking care of their nest. 

5. It was a Cormorant day, they were everywhere we looked.  

A Double-crested Cormorant tree.  

There had to a thousand or more Cormorants, they were near the dam, on the rocks up and down the river and in the trees.  

6. At the Susquehanna River State Park we stopped at the picnic area and walked around a small pond.  We saw the American Robins, Dark-eyed Juncos, Tree Swallows, lots of turtles, Pileated Woodpecker, Mourning Dove and an Eastern Phoebe. 

7. The Susquehanna River trail is a great place for a walk to see the wildflowers. Some I am not sure of their names, but I saw the Dutchman's Breeches, lots of Bluebells and the bottom two (Possible Cutleaf Toothwort and Lesser Celandine) left are unknown and the pretty weeping cherry was on the ride out of the park. 

8. The Bluebells were starting to bloom, another week or so they would look wonderful. They were all along the trail.  We have to go back and check them out again.

We saw a carpet of these pretty yellow flowers, I am not sure of their name.  I am guessing about the id of these yellow blooms but there is something similar and invasive called Lesser Celandine.
