Saturday's Critters # 641

I am sharing part 2 of the woodpeckers I have seen during my travels.

Below is the Golden-cheeked Woodpecker seen on a guided bird walk in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. 

The Jamaican Woodpecker below looks a lot like our Red-bellied Woodpecker.  

Below is the Red-naped Sapsucker seen in Arizona. 

The Smoky-brown Woodpecker was seen during a guided bird walk in Belize. 

Below I have the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, these birds are seen in back yard and all around Maryland. 

The Black-cheeked Woodpeckers, two photos below were taken in Tortuguero Costa Rica. 

The Crimson-crested Woodpecker was seen in Panama during a guided bird walk. 

The Ladder-backed Woodpecker seen in Arizona looks similar to the Downy Woodpecker. Two photos below are the Ladder-backed Woodpecker. 

The Lineated Woodpecker was seen in Costa Rica, this bird reminds me of our Pileated Woodpecker. 

I hope you enjoyed seeing the woodpeckers I have found on my walks and travels.

I am sharing a collection of photos are from my archives. Birding in the Spring is a great time to see migrating birds that just happen to just by on their way north.

The first couple of weeks of May is an awesome time to visit the Delaware beaches to see the shorebirds migrating and the horseshoe crabs laying their eggs.

These photos all taken 5-15-2015, hubby and I visited various birding hot spots to see the migrating shorebirds.  The hot spots we visited just this one day were Slaughter beach, Mispillion Harbor and the Dupont Nature Center, Port Mahon Road and Bombay Hook NWR.

Below a Ring-billed Gull, Laughing Gull, Dunlins and the Red Knot. 

 The Red Knot is listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The Dupont Nature Center in Delaware was a great place to view the Red Knot and various shorebirds. There is a Red Knot in the center section of the photo below. The birds with the black spot on their belly are the breeding Dunlins.

There are at least three Red Knots in the photo below, can you find them.  The Red Knot migrates from South America to the Arctic and they stop at the Delaware bay area to refuel.  The Red Knot is a plump sandpiper, their breeding color is a rich cinnamon color below and a mottled gray with cinnamon edges. 

Delaware at one time was known to have the largest population of spawning Horseshoe Crabs. The Red Knot uses the Delaware beaches as a food stop, they feed on the Horseshoe Crab eggs.  The Horseshoe Crabs have been declining which in turn affects the Red Knot population. In 2023 there was a recovery plan to reverse a decline of the Red Knot. I would assume there would also need to be a plan to help with the decline of Horseshoe Crabs.

Hubby and I have walked some Delaware beaches turning over Horseshoe Crabs that get stuck upside down.  We are happy to have helped them out. I am not sure if there are limitations on harvesting Horseshoe Crabs, they are being used as bait and also for medical companies using the horseshoe crab blood.

Below are more Delaware shorebirds like the Dunlins, Ruddy Turnstones and gulls.

The beachy and sand bar areas attracted lots of birds resting and looking for food. 

Below are various gulls and all the brown spots are shorebirds like the Ruddy Turnstones, Dunlins and Red Knots.

This Spring I am hoping to get to visit the Delaware beaches during the migration of the shorebirds.

I am wondering what everyone is watching lately? I am into the Virgin River series on Netflix and Young Sherlock and Scarpetta on Prime. My latest reading list has been Harlen Coben's " I will find you", Shari Lapena's "Everyone here is lying" and the latest in the series from LJ Ross's called "Berwick". They are either are from the Libby website borrowed from my local libraries or from Kindle Ebooks.

Saturday's Critters # 639

I am sharing recent back yard birds and critters and some critters seen in various national parks are from my archives.

1. The Eastern Blue Bird has always been a favorite of mine, I love to see them visiting my yard.  It would be great to see them using my birdhouses for their nest. 

2. Below are two frequent visitors, the White-throated Sparrow and a Gray Squirrel. 

3. Blue Jays are another common bird visiting my yard, sorry about the photo quality, it was taken through a kitchen window. 

4. From my archives I am sharing some critters from our visits to various national parks. Below are some Elk seen in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 

5. Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons are two of my favorite parks.  There were always critters to be seen. Below is a bull moose, seen off the Heron Pond and Swan Lake loop. The moose below was wearing a tracking collar, there was also a female moose and an elk standing nearby. 

The Buffalo at Yellowstone were plentiful.  It was nice to see the cute calves.  

We watched this Grizzly Bear not far from the Jackson Lake Lodge in the Grand Tetons National Park. 

6. Seen in the Rocky Mountain National Park we watched a mama moose with a calf.  

7. Everglades National Park, a great park to see critters and lots of birds.  

Near the Flamingo marina, Everglades National Park we saw the Crocodile. It is the only place were the Crocodiles and Alligators coexist. The American Crocodile has a v-shaped snout and the Alligators seen in the photo above have a u-shaped snout.  

The Manatees were also seen at the Everglades National Park Flamingo marina area.  

8. Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive.  It was always a treat to see a Black Bear during our visits to Shenandoah National Park. The mosaic below and next few photos are all from Shenandoah National Park.
