Saturday's Critters #384

 If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. I have some new arrivals and a rare sighting for my neighborhood. Also a few winter birds are still hanging about during the first two weeks of April.  

1. April 1st...yard birds are the Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, White-throated Sparrow and a Carolina Wren.

2. April 4th, a Dark-eyed Junco and 2 Pine Siskins. 

3. April 5th are the Red-breasted Nuthatch, a Pine Warbler and a Carolina Chickadee at the birdhouse. 

4. April 6th,  one of my pretties the male Northern Cardinal. 

5. April 6th, is a male Downy Woodpecker. 

6.  April 8th, first of the season Brown Thrasher at my suet feeder.

7.  April 8th...Hubby and I took a walk to check out the local Bald Eagle's nest. It is sad that we could not see any Eagles on the nest. I have a bad feeling that the Eagle's nest is a flop again this year. We were really lucky to find a Long-tailed Duck floating in the lake just below were the Eagle's nest is located.  

8. A rare sighting for me at our local reservoir, a male Long-tailed Duck.  They are usually seen along the coast and prefer salt water. He must be off course, I am glad we just happened to see this sea duck while trying to see the Bald Eagles.  

9. Below are a few more birds we saw during our walk to the lake on April 8th. Top photo is a juvenile Bald Eagle, middle photo are two Canada Geese and the bottom photo are two Double-crested Cormorants on the left side  and on the right are two Canada Geese sitting on shore.

March 10th was my last sighting of the local Bald Eagle couple, the female was on the nest and the adult male was in a nearby tree.

Saturday's Critters # 383

Hubby and I went to see the Snow Geese at the Middle Creek WMA near Stevens Pennsylvania. The visitor center was closed due to Covid but the motor tour was open. The beginning of March the Snow Geese can be seen in huge flocks migrating north. We saw thousands of Snow Geese,  lots of Tundra Swans and various ducks. I saw my first of the year Tree Swallows, some Eastern Bluebirds, Red-winged Blackbirds and I could hear Killdeer nearby. 

1. Below are the Snow Geese, Tree Swallow, Eastern Bluebird, Ring-necked Ducks, a cute Golden Doodle and a ground hog.

2. A closeup of a few Snow Geese. It was noted on March 8th there were 120,000 Snow Geese and 1050 Tundra Swans. The numbers of birds sighted can change daily.

4. Groups after group of Snow Geese were flying in and landing on the lake.

5. A distant shot of the Snow Geese and lake.

6. The Snow Geese  were not social distancing. 

7. A few times the Snow Geese would lift off with a loud roar, only to land a few feet away.  

8. A group of Ring-necked ducks in front of the Snow Geese. 

Crowds of people from all over come to Middle Creek WMA in Lancaster County Pennsylvania to see these Snow Geese. Early March is the best time to see the migration of the spring waterfowl.
