Black Necked Stilts

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes;

For this week, my featured bird is the Black Necked Stilts. We saw these birds at the Eco Pond in the Everglades National Park.

The Black Necked Stilt is a shorebird found in the United States down to Central America. The adults have long pink legs and a long thin black bill. They a black cap and the black continues down their back and their tail is white.

The Black necked Stilt forages for food in mudflats, shallow water and lakeshores. It seeks out the crustaceans, small fish and tadpoles.

This is one bird, I have seen many times at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware, it is a breeding bird there. So the summer months I do not have to go as far as Florida to see these cuties.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the Black Necked Stilts as much as I did.

  5. Very beautiful area. These birds are tricky to get nice shots of because of the sun here in Arizona. You have some wonderful shots with the right lighting:) They make such awkward sounds....which fits with their appearance:)

  18. These are great. Their slender legs among the dried branches of that tree make for some dramatic imagery.

  20. Hi Eileen, I don't think I have ever seen one. I hope to some day soon. Your pictures are excellent! Have an especially great Wed. tomorrow!

  21. Hi Eileen, they are very beautiful, but i wonder why they only have one leg when in the water. Maybe the other one is stretched along with the body, hahaha, i don't know. I also wonder why nature made its legs as red, considering that it is black and white mostly!

  24. These really are splendid birds - we have a 'race' of them in Australia - given time they may even be considered a different species!

  25. What lovely photos, Eileen - and thank you for your recent visit to my blog. The Stilts look amazing ... I have never seen these birds before, though they remind me a bit of the Avocets I was watching last week (and must post about soon!).

  28. There were Black-necked Stilts at Hillman Marsh in Leamington, Ontario which is quite a bit out of their range and caused quite a stir.
    Since I procrastinated getting over there to get a look, I missed seeing them. :(
    So your post of these beautiful birds is timely and well appreciated!
    Your photos are beautiful as always, Eileen!
    Happy Birding!
