Around the Yard

Hello and happy Monday!

Is it just me, March is marching right along. We have had some kind of precipitation, rain, snow and the icky mix all winter. Last year was a record year for rainfall. I think it was 72 inches recorded at BWI airport,  some areas had more like 80 inches.  2018 was the wettest year since 2003. It seems like 2019 got off to a wet start too, very cold too. These are some images from around my yard, mostly taken in late February and some early March.

Various shots of our deck, I was shoveling the snow off the deck every couple of days. It wasn't deep snow, just a couple of inches or so.

The view around my yard and deck. Our nice neighbor helped us by plowing our driveway on this day, After the snow stopped, we started seeing some pretty blue sky, the trees in the yard and in the woods next to our place were covered with snow. The last photo is taken from my window looking at the driveway and into the forest.

On March 9th, I saw my first Great Blue Heron landing in the tallest pine trees in the photo below. There has been a Heron rookery in these trees for the last 8-10 years. I guess this heron sighting is a sign spring is coming soon to our neighborhood.

The sky is clearing after a snow storm March 4th.

The moon or February Super Moon taken from my deck on Feb 19th.

We had a cloudy day and night during the February Super Moon.

The male cardinal has taken over the job (from the Screech Owl)  of banging into my den window.  Crazy bird, I have decals all over the window, it does not help.

I enjoy watching the birds out my dining room window. The cardinals spook easily, so I do not go too close to the window.

Thanks for your visit today!  I hope you enjoyed my post and photos.

Thanks to Angie the host of  Mosaic Monday

  2. Hello Eileen,

Beautiful images from your yard. It's a lot of snow here too. I long for spring. The Super Moon is wonderful, and nice shots!

  5. All that snow shovelling would be quite a work out, glad you got to spend some time admiring the little birds!
    Have a super week.

  6. With any luck you should be past the snow now. It is melting a little too quickly here and that raises the danger of flooding of course. But I am ready for spring.

  7. Great assortment of photos. Do you still have snow on the ground? I do in coastal CT. Normally by March, any snow that falls melts soon thereafter, but not this time due to the unseasonably cold temperatures we've had.

  8. It was a very wet winter, we had rain almost every day! I hope March will dry things up a bit...Great moon shots.

  9. In the north of Italy the weather is extremely dry in this moment...not a drop of rain for weeks.
Nice to spot the Red Cardinals: they are very pretty, even though they should be more careful!
    Have a great week!

  10. you should save those moon shots for Halloween, they are begging for a witch on a broom. the second collage, top two are my favorites. it is the coloring in those, they are special to me... that is a lot of rain for you... we have been in drought conditions for years now...

  11. My deck is filled with snow and it is snowing right this moment - the spring is not around the corner, yet. Pretty birds you have - wishing you a lovely new week.

  13. I have yet to see a cardinal here. Maybe this will be the year! How fortunate you see them every day.

  14. Did you say 72 in of precipitation? That's six years worth for us. With heavy clay soil and flat terrain we'd be under water for a few years. You must have sandy soil so that the water sinks in the soil.

  15. What a beautiful environment you live in. Love when you have bird visitors. So the owl gave his perch to cardinals! It must be safe for them somehow!

  16. Hello Eileen,
This is a beautiful series of winter photos, beautiful with the snow.
The photos are really perfectly photographed.
We also had a storm on March 4, but with rain
    Best regards Irma

  18. We also have very snowy March! Though I love snow, I'm a little bit tired of it :)

  19. ...it's alway a delight to see a cardinal in winter.

  20. Your backyard is the gathering spot for the birds, they obviously love it. You get such beautiful photos of all your visitors. Thanks for sharing them and have a fantastic day and new week.

  21. I enjoyed seeing the photos from your deck and backyard. Seeing a heron right at your home is amazing. I might throw some goldfish in our pond once it thaws and see if I can attract a heron! Happy Monday to you.

  22. The birds through the window, and snow on the deck right to the doorway, beautiful. I am guessing we will never have snow like that down here where we live, but a long way further south it could easily be like that this winter.

  23. There are definitely advantages to living in winter weather...such as your wonderful porch and feeder birds.

  24. We got lots of rain on top of our snow over the weekend. Slippery around here, especially early in the day

  25. Great shots. Brrr all that snow looks cold. Our snow is mostly gone but still cold out. Love the Cardinal shots even though the guy is being a pest---LOL

  26. Great photos - the snow around your place looks very beautiful. You are waiting for spring but we have really had enough hot summer weather and will be very happy to have cooler autumn arrive.

  27. We've had those crazy Cardinals in the past. They see there reflection I guess and bang into the window...over and over again, no matter what you do to discourage it! We saw our first Goldfinches this weekend! YAY! Enjoy the week ahead!

  28. Great snowfall Eileen. In Béjar this year nothing has fallen. Precious the red birds in the white.
    Te deseo buena noche.
    Un abrazo.

  29. We are finally above freezing so the snow is slowly disappearing! I hope we are finished with it until next January! I saw a chipmunk out and about today so spring must be near!

  30. Great views from your window. Loved the cardinals and the moon shots.

  31. Lovely to read your Monday post. So much snow, but lovely to know you're seeing signs of change of season.
What a good neighbour you have Eileen. Great shots through your window, it makes for a really nice aspect. Cheers and enjoy the rest of your week. Hugs xx

  32. Pretty snow pictures. Favorite is the one with the cardinals. They look so pretty against the snow.

  33. All that snow is a welcome sight.

I think it'll be no earlier than late April for herons to show up here.

  34. 2019 is record breaking wet here in the bay area. Hope your cold goes away soon. I'm sure you are just way too ready for wildflowers. Have a great week.

  36. Eileen - finally, we have been on a warming trend. Daylight savings time means lighter evenings, and somehow it really feels like spring must be right around the corner. But … forecast is for 4 - 8 inches of fresh snow tomorrow night! So, I will moderate my expectations! We continue to have birds flying into our windows; every other week I am running out onto the deck to see if I can save the critter. We find if we turn it onto its breast and put it in the sun, the bird tends to survive! Thanks for joining Mosaic Monday so faithfully - I appreciate your support!

  39. Hello Eileen. Beautiful yard, the deck and forest. You really have snow there. The cardinal looks beautiful too.

  40. You and I watch birds from our windows. But, I must say, even tho your photos are gorgeous, I wouldn't want all that snow in MY yard. Herons arriving is a sign of Spring!

  41. Your yard and woods look wonderful in snow cover! Loved the moon series and spotting of cardinals

  42. I hope much of the snow have thawed by now. The cardinal looks very pretty in your window but not good it hit it. Maybe he thinks it is another male to fight off.

  43. Everything is snow, lovely Eileen.

  44. I hope you get a break soon. We have had a lot of rain, but really no snow to speak of. Have a great week.

  45. Love the snow fallen on the trees.

  46. Beautiful - I always love snow photos. 20 inches of total precipitation would be a very wet year for us (although occasionally we get an extraordinary month, like 9 inches in May a few years ago)!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I wonder if you must have something in your house the cardinal sees that he wants, or maybe he sees his reflection and wants to make friends. Interesting. You live in a beautiful place, Eileen, and I love that you need only go out on your deck at night for great views of the moon. :-)

  48. Seems you have the same lousy weather as we have on the other side of the pond !

  49. Very nice images, Eileen, so pretty the cardinals!

  50. Wow! A cardinal pecking at yur window and a heron rookery in the nearby trees, that's amazing. Lovely photos too

  51. Hi Eileen. What a neat post! I enjoyed all the pics and your description of your recent weather. You've had plenty of snow! :-) I love Great Blue Herons. To answer your question on my blog ... It is 2.8 miles around Green Lake. Thank you so much for your encouraging comments re my daily walk. Thank you for sharing your blog! Have a happy day and week ahead! John

  52. Lovely moon captures and adore those Red Cardinals. Thanks for dropping by my blog. I too encountered some snow during a recent 3 month visit to Vancouver Island - as I usually live in the driest State of the driest Continent (South Australia), this was quite a treat, but understand that locals in the northern hemisphere may not be so enchanted :-)

  53. Lovely post Eileen.
Loved seeing all of your photographs and mosaics, especially the moon ones - just lovely.

Hope your week is going well.

    All the best Jan

  54. I am sorry to be so slow visiting...but better late than never. I love your moon shots...specially the one that is below the collage. We did not have near the snow some places had, such as your house, but still glad that winter is ending.. I am thinking spring is well on its way... The Red-winged blackbirds are back, and robins are back. I have been seeing both for over a couple weeks, but not sure how much over.

Hope you are having a good evening!

  55. Hello Eileen
how much snow was left with you. We now have a lot of rain (heavy rain) and a lot of wind to storm. The whole week the weather is very bizarre. Nice to see the photos of your garden and your square :-)
I love the beautiful red cardinals :-)
    Regards.
