On the afternoon of the second day of our Finger Lakes NY trip we drove to the Montezuma Nat'l Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls New York. The wildlife refuge is located near the end of the Cayuga Lake. We drove the 3.5 wildlife drive, seeing Purple Martins, Great Egrets, Canada Geese, Red-wing Blackbirds, Bald Eagle, Northern Shoveler duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Great Blue Heron, Tern, Gadwall ducks, DC Cormorant, Song Sparrow, Mallards, unknown Sandpiper and lots of turtles.
The Canada Geese were the most common bird seen at the wildlife refuge.
There were a few Great Egrets in different areas of the refuge.
I am guessing at this id, I think they are Gadwall ducks.
We saw a few Great Blue Herons at the wildlife refuge.
I think this is a juvenile Bald Eagle. I do not see the white head.
Another guess at this bird, a Caspian Tern? I appreciate any corrections on my id guesses.
The Pied-billed Grebe is a cutie.
I really loved this Bald Eagle sculpture near the end of the wildlife drive. I think it can be seen off of Rt 90.

I should also have mentioned that as best as I can tell from the picture the mystery sandpiper is a Spotted Sandpiper.

Hi Eileen. That's a very striking collage of the many different birds of your trip. And yes, your ID of both Gadwall and Caspian Tern is correct. We get both species over here, the Gadwall is common, the tern less so. Good to see so many Purple Martins busy at their collective home.

This looks like an excellent wetlands with a good variety of species.

I'm always impressed with your selection of birds. Now I need to get a baby rabbit out of my window well.
An fine assortment of birds! The eagle sculpture needs a pressure wash! I am reminded of the damage which was done to the Finger Lakes by acid rain. Toxic sulfurous smoke from the coal-burning power plants and other industries in Pennsylvania streamed up to northern New York State and threatened the entire food chain which depended upon the fish and other aquatic species. Cleaning up the effluent reversed the problem. How any thinking person can deny the adverse effects of pollution is beyond me. Sadly our oceans are becoming more acid with no end in sight.

The bird house, hope there were some vacant rooms for them all, and then the Grebe, what a surprised look in his eyes. Lovely mosaic, you captured the ones in flight so well.The sculpture, what a marvellous piece of work to have there, from a distance it would look very real.

The east coast has such a wonderful array of birds due to all the fly over migration routes! You saw so many beautiful birds at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls. I'd love to =visit these parts of upstate NY someday

Eileen, you've outdone yourself with all the photos this week. I wish I could see a grebe in particular. My friends had one enter their back yard from a scrubland area and were at first shocked by how ugly it appeared, then fascinated when they got their bird book and identified it.
