Happy Thankful Thursday!

Happy Thankful Thursday!

This post is a little backwards, I am starting off with a tour on the morning of Sept 4th and ending with an evening photo from Sept 3rd. I wanted to mention the temperatures while we were in Iceland, every day it was in the mid 50's-60's°. When the sun was out it actually felt warm. It was cold at night, in the mid 40's.

Sept 4th, we took the Golden Circle tour, we stopped at the Geysir Geothermal Area, next was the Gullfoss waterfall and last we went to  the Thingvellir Nat'l Park.

This Geysir Park is a smaller version of Yellowstone Nat'l Park in the USA.  We had some drizzle off and on during this day, mostly just cloudy skies.

Below is the second stop of the tour at the Gullfoss Waterfalls.

I could feel the spray from this waterfall from my high up view point.

The last stop was at the Thingvellir National Park, this park is where we watched the Northern Lights the night before. The park is located in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American Tectonic Plates separate.

We had some drizzle during the day but heading back to the hotel I saw a rainbow from the bus.

Sept 3rd, after an all day tour we had a Northern Lights tour booked for that night. We were picked up 9:30 pm  at the hotel and driven outside the city to a nearby national park.  We watched the Northern Lights for about an hour, it took me awhile to adjust my camera to catch the colors of the Northern Lights. Below is the best I could do, the lights went across the sky in an arch almost like a rainbow. The bottom right light is a vehicle parked selling hot chocolate and waffles.

I am thankful to see the Northern Lights, both on the plane to Iceland and at the park in Iceland.  There is no guarantee to see the Northern Lights, again we were lucky. They are an amazing sight to see.

am thankful for all your visits and comments.

Iceland really does seem to be THE destination this year. My wife was there with her daughter in June, and a good friend of ours is there with his wife right now. The closest I have ever been is to the airport at Reykjavik on the way back from Britain a few years ago.

I love Iceland, not that I have been there, ha ha. The Geysers are superb, and the waterfalls, absolutely stunning.

How nice you could see the Northern Lights! It is not guaranteed at all, but this episode at the beginning of September was particularly strong. Good for you!
Thanks for sharing this emotion...
Enjoy your Thursday!

Hi David, my first visit was just to the airport too. We were on the way to Luxembourg and our Switzerland trip back in the 1990's.

Great photos. I loved Yellowstone when I was there. The land in Iceland is so much more barren. I've never seen the Northern Lights, but my husband saw them a few times when he lived in Boston! Those falls are amazing!!

The lights, amazing and so lucky to see them while you were there. I have seen the Southern Lights once, light a bright red waterfall, we were living in a remote place across a lake, no city lights, and it was almost unbelievable to see them. Down here, the Southern Lights are usually much better when a lot further south. Thanks for all the Iceland photos, now I have seen more of that place than ever before, and learnt lots as well.

What a beautiful series of photos, they are gorgeous. I was in awe when I first saw the northern lights in Alaska. They are so beautiful. Glad you got to experience them while you were visiting.
Thanks for sharing Eileen and have a wonderful day.

These pics make me want to go to Iceland even more than before. I saw the Northern Lights once when I was a kid - right from Toronto. I've never forgotten the experience.

Beautiful photos and it looks like a wonderful experience! I wonder if photographing the northern lights has some of the same challenges as trying to photograph the Milky Way? (long exposure times, tripod, high ISO, etc). Anyway, the photo came out beautifully.

eileeninmd said...

Yes, it was a challenge taking the photo, I did change the settings. Luckily our guide told us exactly how to set my camera. I did not have a tripod though. Usually my camera is always on the auto setting, lol. Thank you for the comment.

Northern lights were common where I grew up. Clear skies in those days too. Where I live now there's too much light.

great shots from the trip. Been there twice ans woudl not mind a third time. But if so, I would go by car to be able to stop whereever I wanted. And for as long as I wanted. :)

It’s all so wonderful ...I’m sure I wouldn’t get a decent picture of the Northern Lights even if we were lucky enough to see them. I pretty much only do Auto, sadly. I marveled at a photo display of them when we were in Alaska (at the wrong time of year anyway of course).

Amazing! I saw this waterfall during the winter. Everything was white, I didn't realised it's so huge! Wonderful pictures. And also you were lucky to see Northern Lights in September. For me Northern Lights are the most incredible phenomenon, which nature gives to us. I saw them in December 2010. I'd love to see them again. Maybe someday...
