On Sept 27th, with these photos I am taking you back to Kauai, we drove on the south side of the island, near the Barking Sands Beach
Click on photos for larger viewing.
1. We stopped at the Kawaiele Waterbird Sanctuary, below is a mosaic showing some of the waterbirds we saw at the Waterbird Sanctuary. We saw lots of the Hawiian Stilt, Hawaiian Coot, Black-crowned Night Heron, Zebra Dove, Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone and the Common Ringed Plover.
2. The Hawaiian Stilt was one of my favorite Kauai Birds.
3. The Common Ringed Plover another common bird seen in Kauai Hawaii.
4. The Hawaiian Coot and in the background is the Black-crowned Night Heron.
5. The Pacific Golden Plover, I saw this birds in various spots around the island of Kauai.
6. The Sanderling is a bird I see on the beach at home, along the Atlantic Coast.
7. The Ruddy Turnstone is a bird I can see on our Atlantic Coast, especially in the winter months,
8. The Hawaiian Coot, similar to our American Coot.
9. A group of the Hawaiian Stilts.
10. The Kawaiele Waterbird Sanctuary, we walked on some of the trails, checking out closer views of the birds.
I hope you enjoyed these Kauai birds.
* Just a note, I am not sure how many of my blogging friends are fans of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books but I noticed Amazon Prime or Acorn will have a series called "A Three Pines" based on Penny's novels. It premieres on Dec 2nd. I already have her # 18 in the Gamache series on hold, it is called "A World of Curiosities" due out on Nov. 29th.

DeleteHi Eileen,
ReplyDeleteI can see why the Hawaiian Stilt is one of your favorite Kauai birds. The evolution of those legs … amazing. Note that the Pacific Golden Plover also has those really long legs. Those two birds, same island, similar evolutionary aspects. Love the photo of the Kawaiele Waterbird Sanctuary. Thank you for taking us along to Kauai and thank you for hosting Saturdays Critters!
John
Thanks John, I appreciate your link and comment. I love seeing all the birds, the Stilts were a favorite of mine. I am glad there are these sanctuaries for the birds, they have safe places to rest and eat. Happy Thanksgiving! Take care, enjoy your weekend.
DeleteI love that first shot of the Hawaiian Stilt - those long legs make it look like a kid to me.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that I was so far behind in the Louise Penny books. I think I have only read 10 of them. I'll have to catch up.

Hello Eileen :=)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful Hawaiian vacation you had. On your visit to the Kawai sanctuary, you saw many lovely water birds, some quite familiar to me, like the Ruddy Turnstone and the Common Ringed Plover, a sweet little bird. Like many other comments, the Hawaiian Stilt seems to be a favourite, and it's easy to see why. I love Stilts for their elegant appearance, and the Hawaiian Stilt is a beauty. I also like the pretty Sanderling you captured. Lovely colourful post! :=)
All the best Eileen, and thank you for hosting.
Hello Sonjia,
DeleteWe did enjoy our vacation, I just love traveling and the bird sightings are just a bonus. Thanks for the link and comment.
Take care, have a great weekend.
Hi Eileen. Well I never imagined that if I travelled to Hawaii that I would find three of our most common waders there. On the other hand I do know that Sanderlings Turnstone and Ringed Plovers migrate through the Pacific Ocean. Enjoyed your pics today and thanks for the link today.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil! I as surprised to see the Turnstones and Sanderlings, we see them here along the coast. I did see the Ringed Plover in Iceland. I am happy to see any and all the birds. Have a great day and happy new week!
DeleteGood afternoon, Eileen from a much colder Minnesota than I'd like! It's 18 degrees and blustery outside. Thanks for the FYI The World of Curiosity coming out Nov 29th sounds like my kind of reading. Your lovely photos out and about nature are quickly warming me up though. So many interesting birds you had your gorgeous trip. I'm heading to Alabama next week and I'm hoping for warmer weather, as of today it's 47 degrees there, a lot nicer than here! Enjoy your weekend and have a wonderful Thanksgiving coming up very soon. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen, I appreciate your link and comment. I am sure your trip to see the family will be great, wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving. It is only a balmy 38° here today, at least it is sunny. Have a great weekend.
