Saturday's Critters # 511

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

I am catching up, I ended this post with photos from September.  These are photos from our local walks to the lake, on the local  fire roads and some from my back yard.  Several people have mentioned my header photo, it is a view of our local lake/Prettyboy reservoir and it is one of my favorite spots for neighborhood birdwatching.

1. Sightings from our walk to the local lake, the usual birds were seen in the usual places. Birds seen are the Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Cedar Waxwings, a nice sighting of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Slider Turtle and the Canada Geese.

2. A larger viewing of my sighting of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

3. A larger view of the Belted Kingfisher.

4. Another day and another walk to our lake, the water level is low due to the drought. Sightings included a Double-crested Cormorant, the usual Great Blue Heron and the Belted Kingfisher.

5. In my backyard, I am still seeing the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and lots of the Fritillary Butterflies.

6.  Another day and here we are again on our walk to the lake. For a local walk I am always happy with the sightings I see. There are lots of pine cones on the trees, is that a sign of this winter's weather? A good winter for the Finch sightings? The lake water level is still going down, the day's sightings were a Bald Eagle seen sitting in a tree across the lake from where we were, a few Great Blue Herons were hanging out on the shore, an American Robin seen in sitting in a tree above the trail, the Green Heron was seen in the usual spot too.

I took a few photos of the Bald Eagle, until it flew away.

7. More looks at the Green Heron seen at our local lake.

8.  Just another walk to the lake, you can see the water levels are down even more now due to the drought. On this day I saw a Solitary Sandpiper, flock of Canada Geese, the Great Blue Heron, Mourning Doves and the Belted Kingfisher.

9. I never know what bird I will see at the reservoir. The low water levels means there is more mud around which seems to attract different birds. This is the Solitary Sandpiper, we watched it for awhile foraging in the mud.

10.   Sept 3, 2023 the second Maryland Cycling Classic was held, it was a hot day with temps in the mid 90's. We were able to watch them speed past our little neighborhood on their route around the Prettyboy reservoir. The race features world champion cyclists from 30 countries. The winner Mattias Skjelmose from Denmark finished the 121.4 miles in 4 hours 28 minutes. They were escorted with a line of police motorcycles, cars with extra bicycles and 2 ambulances in case of emergencies. The race ended at the Baltimore's Inner Harbor with a ceremony and a crowd of people to cheer on the winner.

Thank you for sharing your critters and post!

Yesterday we saw one SINGLE heron standing in the river...and it was a grey one. Have never seen a blue one. And I am not sure we have hummingbirds here in Germany...at least I still haven't heard or seen one. That bald eagle looks very handsome!

Your local area offers a wealth of natural beauty and wildlife to enjoy. I particularly enjoyed the shots of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo and the Belted Kingfisher.

The comment section was a bit hard to find (I had blue on blue for some reason but it's normal now??) Anyway, lovely collection but the sun shining on the water is actually my favourite (In the first block of pics). the eagle is always majestic. Lucky you to see it

Another wonderful collection...and I was interested in the idea of cones.
Indicating winter potential. Over here, we say the berry yields are the indicated...the greater the abundance, the stronger the winter is likely to be...YAM xx

You show so many beautiful birds. The Bald Eagle and the Beltet Kingfisher are my favorites today. The Hummigbird is so pretty too.
Take care and have a great weekend!

Hello Eileen,
You have made beautiful photos and collages again.
It's always a pleasure when you come across this kind of beauty in nature while walking.
The Yellow-billed Cuckoo is beautiful, you don't see it here in the Netherlands, just like the Belted Kingfisher, which is really beautifully photographed.
I also think the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are very beautiful and the butterfly, the sea eagle and the green heron are also beautiful.
I enjoyed your blog again.
I wish you a very nice weekend.
Greetings Irma

Iris Flavia said...

Are you allowed to swim in that beautiful lake?
We have one say 30 minutes to walk to... not allowed to swim in it, sadly. And yet... hardly a bird, just ducks!
All we see here are overfed pigeons (as people throw food they don´t eat into the street, not into the bin, spoiled kids - to me fast food was a rare treat!!!), ravens (I love them!) and those tiny ones this year, Sparrows, in masses!
That´s that about the bird-world here.
In Australia we saw a huge variety but back then (1995 and 1999) there were no digital cameras, at least not available for students and we only too real "important" pics.
Always a joy to pop in here to see who is flying around here on Mother Earth!

I was envious of you, Eileen, that you could take a walk so often while I was quite unmotivated to go outside in the daytime with summer sun and high humidity in all September. But at last I’m going to catch up. The Bald Eagle is majestic. I like the photos of the wading Solitary Sandpiper at the reservoir. Maryland Cycling Classic is such an enjoyable event.

Hello Eileen :=)
What a lovely varied post full of great photos of different bird species. I once had a fleeting glimpse of a Cuckoo but didn't manage to get a photo, and I have never seen one since. Your Cuckoo shots are fantastic as are the Belted Kingfisher and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. It's a pleasure to see all the water birds, and the Bald Eagle You are so lucky to live by a lake-
Thank you for hosting Eileen.Have a great weekend.

i can't even think how hard it would be to ride 4 hours on a bike. wow.. i checked about lots of pine cones on the trees and it says in drought and not enough rain, the trees produce more cones because it needs to propogate more trees because of less water... interesting. we had noticed the past 3 years our pine has dropped a lot more than normal. drought causes pine cones, who knew?

You are lucky when you can enjoy all this beautiful wildlife. The Kingfisher, the Cuckoo, the Eagle are my absolute favourites.
Thanks for sharing.

You live in a great place for bird sightings, which is so great since you capture them and share them here. I live in the California mountains and I mostly see ravens and blackbirds. There are red tailed hawks and some smaller birds too, but ravens are the main birds here. I'm sure they are territorial and make other birds feel unwelcome. Thanks for sharing.

The Cycling race, I wonder if Hugh's oral surgeon was there, he recently competed in the " Chase the Sun" and was going to Colorado in September and maybe travelled down . Love the close ups, It's a long time since I saw a kingfisher, at our previous home they were frequent visitors, as the stream was at the back of our property.
