Nanday Parakeet

Hello,

I have a few more lifers and Florida birds I would like to share. I was able to see the Nanday Parakeet also known as the Black-hooded Parakeet near the Crescent beach area on Florida east coast.

The Nanday Parakeet  is a non-native settler.  They were brought to the US as a pet and started as an escapee. By the 1990's these parakeets have colonies in as many as 19 Florida counties. They can live as long as 25 years.

The Nanday Parakeet is mostly green with the black face mask. They feed on seeds, fruit and berries. The nest in trees with holes.

It is always exciting to see a new bird and lifer. The parakeets are special birds to me even though they are non-native. I hope your enjoy my wild bird sighting. I wish the photos could be better, I took these shots from a parking and the birds on across the street high on the wire.

Thank you for stopping by and as always I appreciate your comments.

My list of memes for today, I hope to see you there. Thanks to both of the host below.

It's funny that I know parakeets, etc come from someplace besides a pet shop, it's odd to see them "out"....LOL!

Parrots of any type are good - I used some as an excuse to stop and get me heart beat under control when I was taking some exercise today: these things need to be done!

Hi Eileen
I can see how these parakeets could flourish in tropical Florida weather. There were also non native parakeets that lived in Brooklyn, NY, although I do not think they were this variety. They made giant nests on top of electrical conductors on telephone poles so that the heat from the wires enabled them to survive the cold winters. They were so colorful but also very noisy....lol

It is hard to get used to the idea of Parakeets in the wild, but they are awesome. We actually have had some up here as far north as the Chicago area, but I assume they migrate south. These are handsome birds and you are lucky to have caught them ... great shots even at a distance.

I have seen them in Cape Coral, but never have been able to get a good picture. Thanks for these.

After all this time, I think they could almost be called local birds. After all, starlings and a whole bunch of other birds were imported from England by some guy who wanted to have every bird that is mentioned in Shakespeare in America. And nobody talks about how those birds aren't native.

There's a great book and movie called "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" (It's San Francisco and not the same bird, but still the same thing...escaped birds that colonized.).....
