During our recent trip to Ocean City Maryland we took a side trip to Assateague Island National Seashore. I love seeing the wild horses and at this time there was a surprise winter filly born a month or so ago. We saw it a few times during our walks and time at the park. Here are some of the photos I took while at Assateague.

Our first sighting of the new filly and her mom Susi, they look alike.
Assateague is always a great place to see the Yellow-rumped Warblers.
A view of the butter-butt.
A cute bay pinto filly around a month old at the time of my photo. She was born in the coldest part of our winter which is unusual. They are usually born in April, may or June. Good news is that the filly and her mom are both doing well.
The Mom named Susi Sole and her new foal who is not named just yet. The ponies are given alpha-numeric names when they are born. If you want to name a new filly you can win the Ebay auction
Another sighting of the Assateague wild horses, was right next to the parking lot. They say to stay at least 40 ft from the wild horses. Some people have trouble following the rules. We saw some people closer.
Assateague's wild horse population is around 80 horses on the Maryland side of the island.
When the horses came close to us, we walked further away and towards our car. The pathway leads from the parking lot to the beach.
I have to say the newest filly and Assateague pony is just adorable.

Maintain a distance with wild animals is good for both and the filly is cute and has the best – colors – of her mother. Nice beach side shots

My favorite book series as a horse-crazy child in the 70's was Misty of Chincoteague and all the others in the series by Marguerite Henry. Or is it Margaret? I had the Breyer horses too. Now and then I'm tempted to adopt one of the ponies and bring one home to our farm - perhaps a Misty look-a-like. I've not been there yet - hope to make it there to see them in person some day. Thank you for sharing!

There was a program on here earlier this week which showed the annual 'horse swim', when the culling for sale is done in order to maintain the population but sustain the island as well. What stunning creatures and they fetch wonderul prices to be kept as pets or trained for showing and working - the funds going to the local fire and wildlife services. Fabulous stuff! YAM xx
I visited this area sixteen years ago and enjoyed it very much. The horses are nominally wild, but they are managed so much it is hard to really ascribe wildness to them. They are beautiful creatures nonetheless.

how cool would it be to name the baby, something clever, she is so cute....and needs a clever, cute name!!
people do not respect nature or rules. we have been having the same problem with the seals here on the beaches. and it is almost impossible to keep people off the beach dunes. no respect!!!

Mum Susi and her new foal are just beautiful. Sadly there are always people who have to break the rules put there tp protect both the animals and people themselves. It is important that wild creatures remain wild for their own safety. A lovely post today Eileen. Thank You.

How sweet the filly is...a true beauty. I read several books about the ponies of Assateague Island when I was a girl...I dedicated a large portion of my life to the love of horses.

We used to have huge flocks of yellow rump warblers...not any more. I see maybe one or two a summer.

Love those wild horses! We have very few Yellow-rumped Warblers this winter, very unusual as they and the Palm Warblers vie for top numbers. The Palms are likewise down in numbers but not the the same extent,

The wild horses are beautiful, and the foal is charming. People do not stick to bans and do something they should not. They hurt horses. Greetings.
That foal is a beauty! Loved seeing the warblers, too.
I took my dog to the vet to have his teeth cleaned and he was a wee bit drunk when we picked him up. He was making such a silly face, I couldn't resist taking his picture (I should be ashamed). He is fine now so don't feel guilty about laughing at his expression.
