Our World & My World

Happy Monday,

On June 30th, hubby and I spent some time at the Great Falls National Park located in Potomac Maryland. We walked the trails to the Olmsted island Bridges, the Great Falls Overlook and part of the River Trail.

Below is the Great Falls NP Visitor Center and the  Mercer Canal Boat. A lock project is underway and the boat rides are not operating at this time.

The bridges over Olmsted Island and the trail leads to the Potomac River and the Great Falls Overlook.

People kayaking are often seen at the Potomac River.

Some of the park's wildlife seen were the Black Vultures, Canada Goose, Swallowtail butterflies and there were lots of Great Blue Herons. The heron's rookery is nearby.

The C&O Canal Trail and towpath.

We had great views of the river and the Great Blue Herons from their nearby rookery.

Double-crested Cormorants perched on a rock in the Potomac River.

We saw a lot of Great Blue Herons from the River Trail.

I hope you enjoyed our park visit and my post and photos.

Hello Eileen,

You've had a nice mini vacation! The photos are very beautiful! We also have herons in the Netherlands,
The most common heron species in the Netherlands is the blue heron. The great egret, small egret and purple heron also occur in the Netherlands; the green heron is sometimes perceived as a stray guest.
I wish you a nice week!

Hugs from the Netherlands!

This seems to an especially lovely place to wander through nature. It is not hard to figure out why the herons and cormorants are on the river.

The great Potomac is an awesome sight in that area. I love the hint of conversation between the two blue herons in the next to the last photo. Happy Day.

You sure saw lots of BIG birds! And what a fabulous place to kayak...looks more adventurous than the rivers around here. (different dangers here though! lol) Enjoy your day!

Finally, your comment box is working. Mine have failed me today, perhaps because they are pop-ups. I'll look into that. Anyway...great looking falls and well worth the trip!

it's a beautiful spot on the potomac, i have never been!! the rushing water and whitecaps are gorgeous but i don't think i would enjoy kayaking there!! hehehe

i have never seen that many herons together, it is a wonderful sight to see!!

the arched trees over the path is a beautiful way to shade the area!! beautiful captures of nature today, i really enjoyed them as i look out the window and see only gloomy skies and rain!! i hope it clears up!!

Great photos. You would have to be an experienced kayaker to deal with that river.

You guys go on the best hikes. Lots to see and do on this one. I love the shots of the great blue herons. One of the few birds that I can ID. Most of the time anyway.

Eileen - wow. I am lucky if I see a blue heron once in a blue moon, and you captured so many. Glorious! That whitewater looks challenging - kudos to any kayaker that gives that a go. Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday, and may this week bring you much joy!

looks like a lovely place for a walk. Nice to see so many herons together - ours tend to be solitary away from the nest.

I loved that visit Eileen. You have a real knack of hunting out rookeries. Lovely to see all those creatures as well as the beautiful waterway. It looks rugged for kayaking! Cheers and thanks always for your visits xx

That was quite the blue heron gathering you captured. Those waters are very dramatic, too. I prefer calmer waters for kayaking. Wonderful trip.
