Saturday's Critters #310

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

This day started as a woodpecker day, first I heard the Northern Flicker in my yard. The Flicker was heard but I could not find it to take a photo. During our walk later, I saw two Red-bellied Woodpeckers on the same tree. A Hairy Woodpecker on a tree across the trail. On the way back we saw the Pileated Woodpecker.

The male Red-bellied Woodpecker, their entire crown and nape are red.

The male Red-bellied Woodpecker and the male Pileated Woodpecker, both seen on distant trees. I cropped these photos below.

The male Pileated Woodpecker has a red mark on the malar, it looks like a red mustache.

I appreciate and thank everyone who links up their post and for all the wonderful comments !

Here is a list of my linky parties;

Also visit:  I'd-Rather-B-Birdin. Thanks to the gracious host: Anni.

Underbart med dessa hackspettar som du har i din närhet. Här har hackspettarna minskat oroväckande, en del arter är starkt hotade i naturen, deras livsmiljöer försvinner med det moderna skogsbruket.

Trevlig helg!

Both the woodpeckers are beautiful birds. We seldom get to see a woodpecker here and I have not seen a woodpecker up close. Thank you for hosting and have a beautiful weekend!

They are unique birds, with own peculiar style of flying, crying and behaving.
I like them all.
Thanks for sharing all these different woodpeckers.
Enjoy your weekend!

Nice to have an assortment of woodpeckers. I have not yet seen a Hairy Woodpecker in our local patch, though I did have a "trifecta" of Pileated, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers. Oh, and a flicker, so it was a "quadrifecta." Missed the sapsucker, though.

Great pair to come across, Eileen. Both species are quite common and I see Red-bellied all the time, Pileated not so much.

Thanks for hosting. Have a great one! (I'm a wreck!)

I always consider it a good day if I see a Woodpecker. The see three or four and of different species would be most unusual. You are fortunate indeed Eileen to have all those trees so near.

Thanks for the picture party this week.

Brian King said...

We also have both of these around, though the Pileated's don't show themselves very often.

Marie Smith said...

They are such determined little creatures. Their skulls must be super strong.

One of the joys of Winter is that we see more Woodpeckers!
Have a wonderful day!

I love seeing AND hearing the Pileated when we're out in the woods. I'm not sure I've seen a Hairy. I need to find out more about that one. We see SO many woodpeckers here and yesterday the Robins arrived. Hundreds of them in the backyard and on the golf course. It's winter! lol Happy weekend!

Nice Woodpecker day! Enjoyed your photos of the day.

Woodpeckers seem to be quite active here now. They are almost the only birds I have been seeing although I did see a heron this week. Thanks for hosting us, Eileen!

Coincidentally I am showing two pileated woodpeckers in my post. I can see the extra touch of red on one that identifies the male, but can't tell with the other. I was so excited to watch these really large birds, compared to the usual song birds. O have yet to see a red bellied one though they are around here. Exciting!

HappyK said...

Like the Pileated woodpecker. Saw one of them out back the other day.

MadSnapper said...

both of these make quiet the racket pecking. I have been know to threaten to do away with the pileated.. they do a lot of damage to fence and house and roof.. the little one is just noisy. they are pretty to look at though.

Jeanna said...

Woodpeckers are so cool unless they decide to peck at the side of your house, lol. Since I live in an apartment I've never had that problem and actually never saw one over here and this area is full of wildlife. Actually too much as a big fat mouse has invaded my place and I believe other apartments in this building. Great photos, I love that red crown.

Woodpeckers are so industrious! They don't ssf tick around here in winter, but come springbvb they are hard at work looking for bugs!

Such a beautiful bird. We've been fortunate enough that they haven't pecked on our house. :)

Woody, Woody woodpecker what sweet captures! Beautiful moments in nature, and thankfully not a lot of wintry photos yet, here as well. The next few days are going to be more like autumn then autumn was! I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving it seems the days keep moving too quickly! Enjoy your weekend and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Eileen.

I love the woodpecker. Both the colouring and the sound they make.

We have woodpeckers up at the cabin on Powell Lake. I enjoy hearing them from a distance. One year a Flicker decided our back wall was perfect to drill for a next. It took days of shooing and putting up fluttering bright objects to deter her. My friend's cabin wall has been used as a nesting site twice. Even after boarding it up, the Flicker returned the following year and drilled a hole in the exact same spot. - Margy

I think I told you last week that I had my new feeders filled and rady. It has been a slow start, but I'm encouraged that I'm seeing woodpeckers today for the first time -- Yay!! But the Pileated Woodpecker is truly the top prize to see! Great pictures Eileen!!

Ornery Owl of Naughty Netherworld Press and Readers Roost said...

I love woodpeckers. They're such a fun bird! I once found a funny comparison between hummingbirds and woodpeckers.

Hummingbird: "I will sip the nectar from this flower while dancing a graceful air ballet."

Woodpecker: "Imma stab the bugs outta this tree with my face-knife!"

Hope it made you smile too.
Have a great week. It's supposed to be very cold in my neck of the woods.
