Our World, My World

 Hello, happy Monday everyone!

After Hilton Head SC, we headed south to our next stop on our trip which was Palm Coast Florida. We spent 5 nights Dec 22-27, near Flagler Beach. We took days trip from there to various parks and beaches.

My luck of having good weather on trips was not so good this time. The day we arrived it was cloudy, very windy and we had some rain showers off and on.  My hubby loves watching a rough ocean with lots of big waves.

A mixture of gulls and terns on the beach.

While hubby was watching the ocean waves, I was watching group after group of Pelicans flying by.

We drove often on the A1A, the road that hugs the coast from St Augustine down to Daytona Beach.  Below we stopped at a beach park in Ormond Beach, watched the waves, surfers, lots of Brown Pelicans, Gulls and Terns.

There are parking areas along the A1A coastal road to pull over and walk the beach.

Checking out the group of gulls and terns, I found a Sandwich Tern. They are smaller than the Royal Tern but larger than a Common Tern. They have  have dark bill with a yellow tip.

A larger image of the Sandwich Tern, showing off its yellow tip bill.

Beach visitors are encouraged to look for the whales along the coast, especially the rare Right Whale. The sign reads to look for the v-shaped spray from the whales blowhole. I did not see any whales or even a dolphin during this trip to Florida.

A view of the Ormond Beach, another beach along the coastal road and the surfers riding the waves.  The Florida Birding trail is a map sharing various locations you can find birds. Driving around Florida you can see the Florida Birding trail signs pointing out a location you can watch the birds.

Please check out and visit the following memes and links. I hope to see you there.

  4. Actually, at the shore, bad weather for humans is often good for birding. Storms out at sea drive some species inshore and the unexpected can become commonplace for a brief period. I have seen Wilson's Storm Petrels while standing on a beach in New Jersey,

  6. While I love serene, blue sea, I really enjoy dramatic sea and sky in the moody weather, so atmospheric. Watching and photographing pelicans must have been fun.

  7. There is such awesome beauty in both calm and dramatic seas, isn’t there. I’ve read that these Right Whales were viewed as the right whale to hunt and they frequently still get tangled in nets. So now, with so few left of any sort there are no wrong whales in the world.

    1. Hello, the hunting to the point of extinction is just awful. The wildlife on earth today does not stand a chance. It is sad! I appreciate your opinion and comment. Wishing you a great day and new week!

  33. Gosh, we were sort of in the same area at Christmas time and I know *exactly* what you mean about the weather. Bill is not a beach walk lover at the best of times, so our birding was definitely curtailed (it seemed kind of important to Be nice to him at that time of year, LOL) . Thanks for sharing your beach and bird scenes. I’m not *too* jealous because our weather will improve and we will get to the beach soon. Not St Augustine though... that’s a little too far except for the Holiday getaway! We like getting away at Christmas and have done since we started traveling.

  37. I imagine Fl has had some of the same type weather patterns we've had here in SC so far a very rainy winter...like for days!! The Sandwich is one of my favorite terns and of course the tiny Least Tern.
