Our World, My World

Happy Monday!

For a change of scenery, some days we will take a walk on the NCR trail.  I have posted many times about our walks on this trail. There are more bike riders than hikers and maybe just a few bird watchers. The other 3 bird watchers are in the mosaic below, the middle bottom photo.

I was happy to see various flowers blooming along the trail.

"Just living is not enough...One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower." Hans Christian Andersen

I heard more birds than I saw,  a few different Woodpeckers, the Carolina Wren, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Cardinals and the Acadian Flycatcher.

The Common Yellowthroat Warbler was probably the most common bird I saw during our walk.

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is often seen sitting in a muddy spot.

There are some hostas blooming along the NCR trail.

Me and my shadow on one of the NCR bridges.

These Tiger Lilies are blooming in a weird spot not far from the Bee Tree Run.

The Bee Tree Run, a pretty view from the trail.

It was a nice day to be out walking, but we will stick to the week day walks. The weekend was way too crowded with the bike riders.

I have a question today, if and when they come out with a Covid vaccine will you be one of the first to get the shot?  I am not in a hurry to get a vaccine when it first comes out. I have never had the yearly flu shot, I've have been told to get the shingles shot. I have heard the first shingles shot did not work great and the second Shingle vaccine was more effective. The 2nd version ran out.  It is all still a wait and see, hopefully there is a vaccine soon and be available to all who need it the most.

We are managing to stay virus free. Taking our walks with nature I think helps us to stay healthy. Thanks for coming along on my walk.   I hope everyone stays safe, happy and healthy.

Love, love, love your views today...

Good question, too. I will not be getting any vaccine. Having seen good evidence (being retired medical) of negative effects on the elderly of the annual 'flu' shots, any benefits seem to me to be at best negated, if not outweighed. Interestingly, I think one must be in prime health in the first place, to tolerate and then benefit from those shots. This is purely observational and my own opinion - each must take their own decision, but the chances of there being a truly effective 'one-size-fits-all' shot arriving for COVID are slim, I would suggest. It is such a huge and emotive subject, there can be no perfect answer... YAM xx

David M. Gascoigne, said...

I have had the annual flu shot since I was sixty and I also had the second variant of the shingles vaccine which apparently is close to 100% effective. You don't want to get shingles, believe me. i have watched two people deal with it and at times they were in agony. In terms of vaccines, I am not sure that all countries have the same vaccine so comparisons are not always easy to make. Canada right now is working furiously to develop a Covid vaccine, so if and when we have one, it will probably not be identical to other countries.

Thank you Yam! I appreciate your answer too. I will continue to take safety precautions, trying to keep from catching the Covid virus. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a happy new week!

Hi David, Thanks for the comment and for answering my vaccine question. I think we are all waiting to hear the outcome for the vaccine. I will get the Shingles vaccine, I am seeing my doc next month. Take care! Have a great week!

Another beautiful post in your blog!
The Tiger lily is very cute, we have it in Finland too.
I hope the vaccine comes out soon and the virus itself gets less aggressive. Am I a dreamer??
Have a sunny and warm new week ahead!

Wonderful nature views Eileen, the tiger lilies are stunning!

As to the possible Covid vaccine, I have not yet made up my mind. Never had the yearly flu shot either, nor swine flu vaccine. It takes a while to know the possible side effects. In Finland there were quite a few narcolepsy cases connected with swine flu vaccine at young people. Very sad.

As for vaccine, I am not sure if I will rush either. I have never taken the flu shot but I sure would the shingles if I needed it. I have know too many people to suffer with them. And it is not fun.

I have had the flu shot every year for 20 years then used to come to our workplace and give them for free we would go to the cafeteria and get them every year. And since the Lifeguard at the YMCA got the shingles and my friend and Savannah got the shingles and they thought they were going to die from them last year Bob and I went to Publix and got our shingle shots it takes to 1 and then a booster in 3 months and we got both of them. And I might not be the first one to take the vaccine but I will be taking it if they get one I am a believer in vaccines

Hello Sandra,
I am lucky so far, I have avoided the flu each year. Knock on wood, I do not get the Covid.
I have known people who have had the Shingles, it is awful. Take care! Have a happy day and a great week!

Some fabulous photos here again today, Eileen, the wildflowers are so varied and colourful such a treat for the eye.
In France we always had our yearly flu shots.
Here in UK my husband has been offered the shingles jab, he's still mulling that over.
I'm not sure when/if there is a Covid-19 vaccine, that proves to be effective, we will be rushing to be inoculated. We will just wait and see I guess.
Happy MM, have a wonderful week!

I've never had a flu shot either so I guess I might wait on the vaccine. But we are able to stay away from other people for the most part where we live, and being retired. Those bird watchers are pretty cute! And I love your quotes. You'll probably like my quote today. Hugs!

Lovely photos. The yellow throated warbler is beautiful. I've never had a flu vaccine and not sure how I'd feel about the COVID_19 vaccine, it would depend on how effective it seemed to be, how limited you would be if you didn't have it (some places might start demanding to see your certificate of vaccination before they let you in for example)

Thanks again Rose! We've been seeing these birdwatchers everywhere lately.

I am not hopeful of any vaccine, especially under the Trump administration...they will push anything to make him look good can't trust that. None of the Flu Vaccines work, Dr Fauci says if they get one that is 50% effective he would be surprised...SINCE I survived the virus I would say I would not risk getting the vaccine, I have never taken flu vaccine, and I had Shingles before they came out with a vaccine. Unless there is a clinical trail of least 6 months I don't see how they can even say it's a vaccine.

Marie Smith said...

I will take the vaccine if and when it is available here. I trust the government to be honest about its effectiveness. If they deem it to be safe, I will take it. I have had the latest shingles vaccine and have taken the flu shot for several years now. It was so east to get the flu from our grandkids but they get the shots now too.

Lovely photos. I particularly like the butterfly. I have taken advantage of vaccines when they have been offered. I am fit and healthy for my age but this virus is no respector of fitness. Look at the number of top athletes that have contracted it. If and when they develop a vaccine I will have it as I see that as being our only way of beating this pandemic.

Another great hike. I'm like you, I prefer the times and places where there are not so many bikers even though I do a little bit of biking myself.

As far as the vaccine for Covid, if the safety data looks okay I'll probably get the vaccine. I'm in that age group where the death rate is high.

Lady Fi said...

Such lovely shots. That butterfly is fabulous! I've heard the Shingrix/second vaccine is very effective against Shingles.

Lisa said...

Beautiful photos, and a beautiful place. Lovely tiger lilies. Were the cats along for the hike? If my doctor advises me to get the vaccine, I will. I always get my 'flu shot, and last year was thrilled my doctor gave me a pneumonia shot. The pharmacy says it's for 65+, and I'm not yet. But, pneumonia is a killer many don't give enough thought to. My husband died of it at only 47. Yes, I'll take any and all vaccines offered!

Jean said...

Beautiful photos! Like those other bird watchers :) Honestly, I am just not sure on the vaccine. I also have never had the flu shot, focusing on prevention instead. However, this is very different, I think. Probably not going to be first in line but I'm not going to say "never!" either. It's very hard to know what to do with so many unknowns at this point. Hope you are having a great day!

To answer your question about the vaccine.
I've never had a flu one so think I might wait on the vaccine before deciding.

All the best Jan

Always lovely photos--thanks for sharing-
I think I heard that if/when a vaccine comes available--everyone will be required to get them--
and that will be a problem for me--as I am allergic to the preservative that they use in them--(usually glycerin)
so I don't get to have any of the vaccines they have out--
two years ago Sept I got a really really bad case of the shingles-and now have permanent nerve damage on my right upper
body--so I do not wish shingles on anyone--but again--not able to take the shot --and now they also tell me that because
I had such a bad case--they wouldn't even want me to take the shot!!
do take care--luv, di

I don't think we have the common yellowthroat warbler here. What a cute bird!
I'm probably going to be in line for the virus when it comes out, assuming it appears to be safe. I'm at high risk. I've had flu shots for years starting when I worked in school settings, and can't testify that they've done me a lot of good. I was told the first shingles shot was one and done. Then the better one was unavailable for months. I finally got that series (2). I guess it finally comes down to as much peace of mind as may be possible in uncertain times.

Angie said...

Eileen - I laughed at the picture of the three birdwatchers!!! I also enjoy how you always include shadow pictures in your mosaics. We have common yellowthroats here, but they are pretty furtive. Good job getting a shot! We would have to look carefully at the data before taking the vaccine - at the rate they are producing it, it is a little concerning. Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

Your trail shot produced some great photos, all of which I enjoyed and your creative collages. Not sure if I would rush getting the flu shot. I will have to think long and hard on that one. We are following all guidelines that are issued and staying away from crowds. I stay away from crowds anyhow so it is no great loss of my day to day routine. Just staying close to home more than usual. If I had a trail like this I would be on it every day but ours seem to get so crowded and not everyone is adhering to the guidelines. You really do take the most scenic and beautiful walks! We've not seen many butterflies this year, and my conservation friends are noticing it as well. But we're hopeful as the meadows start to bloom, as your post shows, we'll start seeing more. And by the way, I learned today that butterflies sitting in the mud, is called "puddling." Swallowtails do it a lot, as they drink water, and extracting salt and minerals from whatever they are congregating on.

Can a safe vaccine be developed in a few months for a virus that's still unfolding its characteristics? I don't know. I don't have faith or trust is those who say they have the vaccine right now or close to it. I saw headlines that Putin says his country has a vaccine for the coronavirus. There's a crook for you.
I do get the annual flu shot. It's a habit now. I started getting the shot as a precaution because we began living with Mama who was in her 80s at the time.

Hi there Eileen, those flowers you've photographed on your walk are gorgeous... the tiger lilies especially, such an elegant plant. I agree, places can be just too busy at times over the weekend. Its a very pretty area so no wonder its popular I guess.
As to getting the vaccine if and when it becomes available, well, I don't think we'd be rushing for it. Its only recently we've been having the flu shots. I'd be inclined to wait and see for a while and then perhaps have a talk with our Dr who often shows she has a mind of her own if you know what I mean.
Cheers now and lovely to re-connect :D) xx

Pretty flowers and critters from your walk on the trail. I like the tiger lilies. Weekends are always busy. I will choose the weekdays and leave the weekends to those who can't make it on weekdays. I won't be in a rush to get the vaccine. Will wait and see.

Your walk again looks very peaceful and rewarding in itself. I think the shore birds may be getting ready to make their autumn move, so birding will pick up in the next couple of weeks.

It's an open question if the vaccine trials are being done responsibly or if political influences are rushing them. Once a vaccine is reliable I'll hope to get it: I get a flu shot every year and I am very worried about antivaxers endangering the public by their irresponsible anti=science position.
