Saturday's Critters # 428

Welcome to Saturday's Critters!

Hello and happy Saturday!

If you love all God's creatures like I do and also like to blog about them and take critter photos this is where you can share your critter post. Link up your post and share your critters, join in with my critter party ! You can share any kind of critters the real ones, pretend ones, statues and paintings, a new or old post!

My Grand-dogs are the only critters I have been seeing lately. I do hear some birds on our local walks with the dogs. A small group of Tufted Titmouse were fussing at us from their perches above our heads.  My yard birds have just disappeared.

1. I have found a good use for the hair my grand-dog sheds. Below the archived photo is a Tufted Titmouse grabbing my old dog Goldie Girl's hair for a nest.  The Titmouse has a mouthful of dog hair.

2. From my archives, a closeup of a Tufted Titmouse.

These images below are all from my archives, birds seen during the month of February 2019 through Feb 2022.

3. A backyard male Eastern Bluebird.

4. A backyard American Goldfinch.

5. A group of Yellow-rumped Warblers seen Feb 2021 in Assateague Island Md.

6. Feb 2021, our backyard Pileated Woodpecker

7. Feb 2020 At the Prettyboy reservoir, A Bald Eagle perched in a tree not too far from the nest.

8. Feb 7, 2022 a morning walk with Nibbles and Winnie on the fire road and to the lake.

This post was a mish-mash, archived photos of some of my favorite birds and my grand-dogs Nibbles and Winnie.

Thank you for sharing your critters and post!

Thanks to all my visitors and for your past and present comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves and respects wildlife. Thank you for linking up a critter post.

Here is my linky:

I am also linking up to Anni's blog party found here I'd Rather B Birding   Anni always has some beautiful birds to be seen on her blog, check it out!

February is a slow birding month! Our weather has been very off-putting too. We still have a few birds at the feeders, though.

Have a good week, and thanks for your visits to my blog.

After the mobile hairdresser Julie has cut my hair, I sweep up and throw the clippings onto the garden, aspecially at this time of year. Very soon our birds will be looking for nest material just like your own. Eileen, I reckon lots of your garden birds have spread out because it's migration and almost breeding time.

Thanks for the linking today. Enjoy your walks with Nibbles and Winnie.

NatureFootstep said...

lol, sounds like the situation over here. Many birds are gone. For now a few migrating birds has appeared. But the forest are so quiet. No birdsong! And some usually sing loudly this time of year.
The Tufted Titmouse really has it´s mouth full. :) Good for keeping eggs warm.
Take care!

Hi Eileen,
Wonderful series of photos.
The Eastern Bluebird is really beautiful, you don't see it here.
The bald eagle is also great to see.
What a great idea to leave your dog's hair like this for the birds.
I wish you a very nice weekend.
Would you mind posting my link??

Oh I know well that lack of lens fodder! Thank heaven for archives, eh?! Oh yes, the fur lining is a luxury and definitely worth remembering that birds will enjoy that... fab shot of the titmouse in action with its find! YAM xx

Hello Eileen, :=) The dog hair is an excellent idea for the purpose of nest making. My hubby used to use cotton wool which He unravelled, and spread out on the bushes and the birds used to take it. Since you stopped feeding the birds because of undesirables, they have disappeared, but you have many beautiful birds to share from two years ago. They are all super captures. The Eastern Titmouse and Bluebird are lovely looking birds, and I always enjoy seeing your Pileated Woodpeckers with their vibrant red head, and you took stunning sharp shots of the Bald Eagle. The American Goldfinch and Yellow-Rumped Warbler are pretty birds. Will you start feeding the birds any time soon? Nibbles and Winnie must really enjoy their walks in that beautiful location, lovely happy shots of them both.
must really enjoy

I am sure that dog hair is a perfect lining for a nest. Our Barn Swallows used quite a but of horse hair which is not nearly as soft and can get wrapped around the nestlings. One poor bird, upon leaving the nest, had horse hair entangled on one of its legs, and we found it hanging, dead.

Your archive of bird shots gave us a wonderful treat today, Eileen. I am seeing few birds around here and I think it is because the weather has been so cold and they are hunkered down. I see little flocks of Sparrows all huddled in dense bushes chattering away to each other but that is about it.

Hello Eileen! I love the post, and the reminder that it is indeed getting to be nest-building time! I do need to fill an empty suet feeder with hair for them. Baby squirrels are also being born now too, I'm seeing them in the posts of wildlife rehabbers, when re-nesting attempts fail. I also heard peeps the other night too. Spring is coming! Hope you've had a good weekend, my blogging friend! ❤

What a treat to see your birds. Seeing many of the birds showing up to the suet and sumac fruit here...robins returning, bluebirds but not yet the true harbingers, the red-winged blackbirds. They knew we would be getting a whopper of a storm. We have tons of eagles in our area....in the newly cleaned up big lake nearby, the 3 rivers also nearby as the eagles fly overhead from there and I am seeing them along highways. And of course our stalwart birds, including the titmouse are still hanging in there with our brutal winter.

DeniseinVA said...

What a great idea using dog hair, and using a suet cage for a ready supply for the birds. Brilliant! Loved the photo of the Titmouse making use of it and a great close up too! Also loved the other birds, my favorites :) Thanks for sharing Eileen and have a great week.
