On Oct 9-11th , hubby and I went on a short getaway. First we took a short detour off of Rt 50 to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge Maryland. Then we headed to Chincoteague Island Virginia, the Chincoteague Island National Wildlife Refuge, Tom's Cove and the Assateague Island National Seashore.
1. These are images from our drive at the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. At Blackwater NWR, we took the short Marsh Edge trail.
We saw and heard these Terns, they were so loud. I think they were fighting over a fish? Back in the car and on the wildlife drive, I found a juvenile Bald Eagle sitting in a tree, monarchs were flying next to our car, a White-tailed Deer walking off into the wood and the Tickseed Sunflowers were plentiful along the drive.
The Tickseed Sunflowers looked pretty, the yellow flowers were seen all along the wildlife drive.
2. Further along the wildlife drive, we saw the Yellowlegs, numerous Great Blue Herons, Canada Geese and an Egret.
3. We saw two Mallards, one is hidden in the grasses hanging out with the Canada Geese.
5. After driving a total of 4 hours or more, we arrived in Chincoteague. We took a walk on the trail to the pony overlook. On the way I saw this tiny Sika deer, it is so cute. At the pony overlook I found one Tricolored Heron and the ponies of course.
A distant look at the Chincoteague Ponies.
6. On the road to the beach, we see lots of Egrets. Further up the road we see the Double-crested Cormorants hanging out, we caught the sun setting at Tom's Cove, a small group of Black-bellied Plovers (just a guess) and there were 3 Great Blue Herons flying over the cove.
7. On the shore of the cove, I was watching a group of what I believe are the juvenile Black-bellied Plovers. There is a closer look at two in the mosaic above bottom left image.
8. The end of day one, we watched the sun setting over Tom's Cove in Chincoteague Island NWR.

They are so fascinating. I’m going to be looking at all the comments to see if Tom, The Backroads Traveller, picks up on the location of that sunset photo. 😊 Thanks, as always, for hosting and sharing Saturday’s Critters. DeleteI do love finding the birds and critters, the sunset was lovely.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend!
Dear Eileen,
ReplyDeleteYour short vacation looks very relaxing and exciting and productive in connection with animal sightings. I had to laugh at your comment "Looking straight on, the Great Blue Heron looks a little silly." That's true ;-DD
I also think that the Sika Deer was juvenile - it still looks so big-eyed and a bit fluffy. Very cute! It was very nice to accompany you!
Have a nice weekend and a happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 🦃🥧
All the best, Traude
🍂🕯️☕🍂☕🕯️🍂
Thank you Traude, for your link and your comment.
DeleteThe little Sika deer did not seem afraid of us, with the hunters nearby an adult deer would be long gone.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks for another great adventure Eileen. You know if I took a four hour drive I would hit the end of England, so I admire your dedication to wildlife watching. You are correct about herons. At the wrong angle of photography they can look very strange, especially the grey ones. Good to see your Sikas. I think we have them here in UK but it's hard enough to see or common Roe Deer without seeking out a tiny Sika. Thanks for your hosting again.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil, for your link and your comment.
DeleteIt is a long drive from where we live to get to our coastline, at least 3-4 hours.
The Sika sighting was great, I do not see them out in the open.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend!
love the precious face of the Sika and beautiful chest furs too. the sun in the first photo is spectacular. you really had a great wild life day on that four hour drive about... I did not know about Sikas. I see they are in UK also.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra,
DeleteI was happy to break up our drive to Chincoteague Virginia. We do see lots of wildlife on the coast of Maryland and Virginia. It is sad that the hunters are allowed in the refuges, I hope this cute deer stays safe. Have a great day!
That little Sika Deer is so cute. I'm surprised that there is hunting in a refuge.
ReplyDeleteThanks RedPat for the link and comment. I do not like that they allow the hunting in the refuges. But, I guess that is how they make extra money on the permits and licenses that are needed. Take care, have a great weekend.
DeleteYou see many critters in a short period of time. You have to be watching or you go right by them.
ReplyDeleteThank you Red, I appreciate the visit and comment. I do enjoy looking for and watching the wildlife. Have a great weekend.
DeleteOh what a beautiful place and so rich with wildlife ~ Favorite is the deer 'checking you out.' ~ Wonderful series of photos ~ a definite ~ Wow! and thanks,

DeleteHello, Eileen. You have rich wildlife all around, which I’m always envious. It’s a pleasant surprise to know you have Sika deer in your place as it is the same species with the deer in Nara Park. "Sika" written as 鹿 means "deer" in Japanese. My favorite photo is #12 among all the nice photos. Have happy days ahead.
ReplyDeleteYoko
Thank you Yoko, I appreciate your comment. The Sika deer are so cute, I was lucky to see this one come out close to the trail. Take care, have a wonderful week!

Deletethe picture of deer is stellar, wow, i really love them. i saw what i thought was an egret yesterday but i am not sure how i could tell if it was a juvenile heron or egret. i did think the egrets were gone now, so maybe it was a heron. there was a mature heron close by!! i will be back to link in, i was not sure if the linky was still open!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Debbie, for the comment and for linking up. I think the egrets and herons stay longer along the coastline areas.
